Cinque dischi in carriera, l’ultimo dei quali per rinascere e lasciarsi alle spalle errori e fregature. I portoghesi Gwydion hanno pubblicato l’ultimo full-length nel 2020, rinascita e punto di partenza per cercare di conquistare quello spazio nella scena che dischi come Horn Triskelion e Veteran potevano dare loro. Ho avuto modo di parlare con il chitarrista Luis Figueira della storia della band, del nuovo singolo Oak, Ash & Thorn e di cosa faranno i Gwydion in futuro.

UN GRANDE RINGRAZIAMENTO A MARZIA VETTORATO PER LA TRADUZIONE DELL’INTERVISTA.
L’ultimo disco è del 2020, immagino quindi che in questi anni abbiate lavorato per una nuova release. Cosa ci potete dire?
Sì, stiamo lavorando su alcune idee che abbiamo raccolto nel corso degli anni. Ma è davvero fantastico vedere che molte delle nostre idee più recenti stiano migliorando sempre di più. Onestamente, credo che la parte più difficile sia scegliere quelle migliori.
Iniziamo dal principio, da come si è formata la band e quali erano le motivazioni che vi hanno spinto a unirvi.
Tutto è cominciato con un gruppo di amici che si sono uniti per condividere la loro passione per la musica, e per suonare ciò che amavano di più. Il motivo principale per cui mi sono unito ai Gwydion è il fatto di conoscerli da molto tempo e, come ho già detto, che siano ancora un gruppo di amici che hanno una band.
Siete in giro da un po’ di anni ormai, dal lontano 1995. Tanti anni e lavori alle spalle, ma non c’è ancora stata la consacrazione a livello continentale. Cosa pensate sia mancato?
Credo che si tratti solo di essere al posto giusto nel momento giusto. Ci sono state alcune decisioni non esattamente favorevoli prese in passato, ma nulla che ci abbia uccisi: stiamo risolvendo il tutto e sono certo che “esploderemo” con questo album.
Dagli esordi a oggi tante cose sono cambiate e migliorate/peggiorate col tempo. Se ripenso agli anni ’90, oltre a sentirmi vecchio penso che ora tutto è diverso e sotto diversi punti di vista è molto peggio. Streaming, follow, singoli digitali, social, reel e altre cose moderne tolgono tempo ed energia all’unica cosa che dovrebbe contare, ovvero la musica?
Siamo stati testimoni di alcuni cambiamenti nel corso degli anni, alcuni positivi, altri negativi, e non solo a livello musicale. Penso che si debba semplicemente tenersi aggiornati, altrimenti si “perde il treno”. Come molte altre cose nelle nostre vite, bisogna evitare ciò che è sbagliato e migliorare ciò che invece è giusto.
Guardando indietro, cosa potete dire dei precedenti lavori?
Ŷnys Mön: Siamo davvero orgogliosi di Ŷnys Mön, ma ci sarebbe piaciuto avere una migliore produzione.
Horn Triskelion: Personalmente è uno dei miei album preferiti di sempre. Pieno di brani fantastici.
Veteran: È uscito in un periodo difficile per la band, altrimenti sarebbe grandioso.
Thirteen: Grande album e anch’esso pieno di ottimi brani, ma a quel tempo avevamo una terribile etichetta discografica.
Devo dire che dopo la firma per la Trollzorn Records e la pubblicazione dei primi due dischi ho pensato che fosse arrivato per voi il tempo dei tour europei e dei festival estivi. In particolare Horn Triskelion è molto valido, ma il terzo disco è uscito come autoprodotto: cosa è successo?
Ricordi le “cattive decisioni”? Posso solo parlare di ciò che ho sentito. Ci sono state delle promesse non mantenute, e qualcosa è andato storto.
Parliamo dell’ultimo – al momento – Gwydion. Dal titolo sembra quasi una rinascita della band, è così?
Si tratta di una via di mezzo tra una rinascita, e la celebrazione del nostro 25esimo anniversario. In origine sarebbe dovuto essere un doppio album ma abbiamo deciso di semplificare il tutto, a causa del lockdown da Covid. Avevamo dei tempi incerti davanti a noi, e abbiamo pensato che un doppio album sarebbe stato una decisione troppo “ardita” in quel momento.
Su Gwydion sono presenti tanti ospiti, ognuno dei quali da il proprio contributo. Come li avete scelti e in quale maniera avete lavorato?
Li abbiamo scelti mentre eravamo in studio, durante le sessioni di registrazione, e abbiamo iniziato a discuterne. Solo Pēteris “Peter” Kvetkovskis (Skyforger) e Matt Nilsson (Brothers of Metal) hanno registrato le loro parti a distanza. Artur Almeida (Attick Demons), Rubén Almeida (ex-Gwydion), Célia Ramos e Isabel Cristina (Malignea) hanno registrato in studio, mentre si divertivano a ubriacarsi insieme a noi… ahahah!
Come sapete ho apprezzato molto il disco, ma devo dire che 14 canzoni sono proprio tante. Come mai la scelta di inserire così tanti brani in scaletta?
Sì, sono completamente d’accordo. Come ti dicevo, sarebbe dovuto essere un doppio album. Penso che il tempo ci abbia dato ragione e anche ora sono troppe canzoni. Alcune sono fantastiche, altre tendono a “perdersi” in mezzo a tanta musica.
Lo scorso anno avete pubblicato il singolo digitale Oak, Ash & Thorn. C’è un motivo particolare o era più semplicemente un buon modo per far sapere ai propri fan che i Gwydion ci sono e continuano a lavorare?
Posso dire che in un certo senso tu abbia ragione. Far sapere ai nostri fan che esistiamo non era la ragione principale, ma comunque… era una ragione. Lavorare a un album non è molto “piacevole” se nonostante il duro lavoro, le persone notano solo che non si “emerga”!!! Ma nel frattempo abbiamo avuto la fortuna di suonare in grandi festival in Germania, Austria, Portogallo e Francia.
Il tour dei sogni al quale partecipare?
Ogni tour in cui potremmo mostrare la nostra musica nella giusta maniera, suonando davanti a tanti fan in quanti più paesi possibile! Amici + musica + birra + sidro = tour dei nostri sogni, eheheh!!!
Sono molto curioso di ascoltare le nuove canzoni, ora però lascio la parola a voi per poter dire quello che volete. A presto!

Your last work was released in 2020. I can imagine you have been working on a new one in the last few years. What can you tell us about that?
Yes, we are working on some ideas that we have been collecting over the years. But it’s really great to see that many of our newest ideas are getting better and better. Honestly, I think the hardest thing is to choose the best ones.
Let’s start from the beginning: how did the band come together? What was the reason that led you to join?
This band started because a group of friends got together to share their passion for music and play what they enjoy. The main reason that I joined Gwydion was that I knew them long ago and as I used to say, Gwydion are still a group of friends that have a band too.
You have been on the scene since 1995 (quite a long time). You released a lot of works over the years, but you are still far from a “consecration” on a continental level. Do you think something is missing, and what?
I think it’s just being at the right place at the right time. There are some not so good decisions made in the past but nothing that could kill us and now we are fixing that and I’m sure that we will “explode” with the album.
Many things have changed over the years, from the beginning to the present: something got better, something worse. Thinking about the ’90s, besides feeling old, I find that nowadays everything is different (and worse) from several points of view. In your opinion, do “modern” stuff like streaming/following/digital singles/social media take time away from music (that is, what matters most)?
We have witnessed some changes over the years, some are good and some are bad and not only in the music. I think we just have to be updated, otherwise you “loose the train”. Like so many things in our lives, you just have to avoid the worst things and improve in the right things.
If you looked back in the past, what would you say about your previous releases?
Ynys Môn: We are very proud of Ynys Mön but we would love to have a better production.
Horn Triskelion: Personally it’s one of my favourite albums ever. Full of great songs.
Veteran: It came out in a tough time for the band, otherwise it would be huge.
Thirteen: Great album but we had a shitty record label at the time, full of great songs too.
After you signed up for Trollzorn Records and released the first two albums, I honestly thought that the time for European tours and summer festivals had come. To be more specific, Horn Triskelion is very good, but your third album is a self-released one. What happened?
Remember the “bad decisions? I can only talk about what I´ve heard. There were some “promises” broken and something went wrong.
Let’s talk about Gwydion, your last work – currently –: the title almost sounds like a rebirth of the band. Do you agree with it?
It’s between a rebirth and celebrating our 25th anniversary. Originally it would be a double album but we decided to keep it simple because there was the Covid lock-down. There were some uncertain times ahead and we thought that a double album would be a “burnt decision” for that time.
There are many guests on Gwydion: each one of them gives a contribution to the album. How did you choose them, and how did you work together?
We chose them while we were in the studio, during the recording sessions and we started to discuss it. Only Pēteris “Peter” Kvetkovskis (Skyforger) and Mats Nilsson (Brothers Of Metal) recorded their parts from a distance. Artur Almeida (Attick Demons), Rubén Almeida (ex-Gwydion), Célia Ramos and Isabel Cristina (Malignea) recorded in the same studio while having a good time a getting drunk with us all… hahah!!!
You know that I really appreciated the album, but I would say that 14 tracks are… a lot! Why did you choose to put so many songs on the tracklist?
Yes, completely agreed. As I said before, it would be a double album. I think time told us that we were right and even nowadays it’s too many songs. Some of those songs are great, but became “lost” among so much music.
You released the digital single Oak, Ash & Thorn last year. Is there a specific reason behind this choice, or was it just a good way to let your fans know that the band named Gwydion exists and keeps on working?
I can say that you´re right in a way. To let our fans know that we exist wasn´t our main reason, but yes, it was a reason too. To work on an album it’s unfair, because you´re working hard and people only notice that you don’t pop up!!! But we were lucky to play in great festivals in Germany, Austria, Portugal and France in between.
What is your dream tour, the one you wish to take part in?
In any tour that we could showcase our music fairly, to play for as many fans in many countries as we could!!! Friends + Music + Beer + Mead = Tour of our dreams!!! heheheh
