Intervista: Drunkelweizen

Si chiamano come una birra ma con una R in più: cosa potevano suonare se non pirate metal alcoolico e rumoroso? Andiamo a conoscere la band di Portland, USA, e l’occasione per farlo è la pubblicazione del disco di debutto Pioneers Of Alcohol, lavoro autoprodotto in grado di farvi scolare qualche pinta di doppio malto.

In un bel giorno d’estate mi arriva il vostro promo, un’esplosione di pirate metal super energico! In quale modo è nata la band e cosa vi spinge nella direzione (musicale, artistica) intrapresa?

Iniziamo con un brindisi a te a ai tuoi lettori! La fermentazione iniziale di questo progetto è iniziata anni fa, quando due dei membri, all’epoca in una band black metal indotta dal corpse-paint, hanno avuto l’opportunità di aprire per i Korpiklaani nella data di Portland in un tour negli Stati Uniti. Ci sono voluti molti anni perché l’idea maturasse completamente, ma volevamo prendere le nostre radici black/death metal, combinarle con grandi arrangiamenti orchestrali, onorando anche alcuni dei pionieri del folk metal che ci hanno ispirato a esplorare quello stile. 

Come nasce la scelta del nome?

Il nome è stato pensato come uno scherzo tra gli stessi membri sopra menzionati. In questo caso, la musica e il contenuto dei testi sono stati i primi, e sapevamo che Drunkelweizen era la scelta perfetta. Tutti abbiamo condiviso l’apprezzamento per le birre e l’alcool, e la birra tedesca di grano scuro (dunkelweizen, manca solo quella ‘R’, sempre importante) era in cima alla nostra lista! Ha anche una certa sonorità, molto simile ai pirati ubriachi ai quali spesso siamo stati paragonati, gli Alestorm.

Avete appena sfornato il disco di debutto Pioneers Of Alcohol: parlatene e fateci capire cosa rappresenta per voi.

Pioneers Of Alcohol è un’ode a coloro che nella storia hanno sempre legato la loro vita al nettare divino, l’alcol. Ognuno dei brani iniziali racconta la storia di una grande mente attraverso la storia, anche se non tutti i racconti finiscono nella favola felice che tutti vorremmo immaginare. Le ultime tracce sono ispirate da alcune nostre barzellette ubriache e sono un brindisi a tutto ciò che sta per venire!

Le canzoni sono abbastanza lunghe per il genere che suonate, tra i cinque e i sette minuti. Come sono nate e vi eravate dati dei “punti di riferimento” durante la scrittura?

Dannazione le lunghe tracce!! La maggior parte delle tracce è iniziata con la composizione musicale, con i testi a seguire. Nel senso di raccontare le (per lo più vere) storie di individui nel corso della storia, la lunghezza maggiore permette certamente di approfondire un po’ di più nelle loro storie. Ci sono state molte ricerche su ogni individuo (e su molti altri che semplicemente non potevamo includere) per garantire che fossimo in grado di raccontare le loro storie da ubriachi.

Concentriamoci sui testi, da quel che ho capito parlano di personaggi e luoghi del mondo dei pirati: è così? Quali sono (e perché) i vostri preferiti?

Camminate sull’asse, voi spadaccini! Haha. Nonostante il fatto che siamo spesso classificati come “pirate metal”, non una singola traccia in realtà è su un pirata. Il più vicino sarebbe l’ammiraglio Horatio Nelson (nella canzone Draining The Cask), che è morto in mare ed è legato alla sempre sfortunata frase di “succhiare la scimmia”. La traccia seguente, invece, è sulla Patrona Santa Brigida di Kildare. Molti conoscono le storie di un individuo che trasforma l’acqua in vino, tuttavia due dei miracoli che S. Brigida ha compiuto erano la trasformazione dell’acqua in birra! Ora, questo è un ospite che voglio alla mia prossima festa a casa! Certamente non abbiamo nulla contro i pirati, e molti hanno grandi storie che potremmo raccontare; tuttavia, l’intenzione era quella di raccontare le storie di alcuni eroi (potenzialmente) meno noti con stretti legami con l’alcol.

Il lavoro è autoprodotto: una scelta mirata?

C’è8 una certa quantità di libertà che arriva con il DDIY (Drunken do it yourself, letteralmente Il fatto da solo da ubriaco) dove ogni aspetto è completato “in casa” tra la band. Se ci fossero state offerte altre opportunità, le avremmo certamente esplorate, ma più persone coinvolte significa anche che il nostro barile di birra si asciuga molto prima. 

Pioneers Of Alchool è appena uscito: state già lavorando al seguito o aspettate responsi, proposte o un po’ di tempo per maturare?

Siamo già al nostro secondo album e stiamo già pensando a un terzo. Accogliamo con favore qualsiasi feedback, con la lunghezza delle canzoni evidenziata su più di un account, ma stiamo creando musica che vogliamo suonare. Qui a Portland, da dove veniamo noi, tutti bevono birre IPA orribili. Di conseguenza, questo è prevalentemente ciò che producono tutte le fabbriche. Non vogliamo cadere in una posizione simile con la nostra musica. Liricamente esploreremo contenuti drasticamente diversi, cercando anche di portare gli elementi più pesanti e melodici che abbiamo fino ad oggi. Cioè, stiamo prendendo in tutti e tre gli elementi… almeno nella misura che le nostre menti ubriache ricorderanno di farlo.

Pirati, alcool e metal: ci sono altri interessi al di fuori di questi tre?

Come accennato nella risposta precedente, dal punto di vista dei testi è tutto sul tavolo e siamo davvero entusiasti di mostrare una visione molto diversa sul prossimo album! Personalmente, mi piacciono i film horror e passo il tempo con il mio cane. Uno o entrambi potrebbero appoggiarsi a parte della musica del futuro. I finlandesi hanno il grande detto Kalsarikanni, ovvero ubriacarsi a casa da soli in mutande. Ci iscriviamo moltissimo a quella newsletter e non sai mai quale ispirazione ne verrà fuori!

Com’è la scena folk metal statunitense? Vista dall’Europa sembra ci siano pochissime band, eppure dalle vostre parti non mancano tour di gruppi europei importanti con numerose date, il che vuol dire che il pubblico non manca.

Il folk metal certamente non è così popolare qui come lo è in altre aree. Con alcune delle opportunità di apertura per tali band quando passano da queste parti, spesso non sorprende che qualcuno pensi che siamo un membro sconosciuto del tour. È un elemento molto diverso dalle band standard black, death o hardcore che la gente vede comunemente, e può sicuramente essere un’esperienza divertente per coloro che non hanno familiarità con esso. Soprattutto se si tratta di una bevanda gustosa o di dodici. 

Quali sono gli obiettivi della band? Cosa vorreste fare in futuro?

Attualmente mi concentro sul secondo album e spero solo di far conoscere le canzoni a più persone. Gran parte del metal è sempre così serio, che vogliamo davvero solo fornire uno spazio per dimenticare alcune delle preoccupazioni della vita quotidiana e divertirsi un po’. Nel caso di Pioneers Of Alcohol, forse imparerai anche qualcosa (e poi lo dimenticherai immediatamente in uno stato di torpore da ubriaco) su alcuni individui attraverso la storia.

Ho ascoltato il vostro lavoro e mi è piaciuto molto. La mia domanda è: vi hanno mai paragonato ad altre band pirate metal come Alestorm, Privateers o gli italiani Calico Jack? Se sì, come vivete questo confronto?

Sono contento ti siano piaciuti! E sì, spesso siamo paragonati agli Alestorm o semplicemente si riferiscono al nostro genere come “Pirate metal”, più che a qualunque altro genere o band. Gli Alestorm sono dei maestri in ciò che fanno, quindi quindi è certamente un elemento difficile da rispettare. Come accennato durante la nostra intervista, non ci consideriamo degli spadaccini e musicalmente optiamo per un suono complessivo un po’ più cupo/pesante. Vogliamo fondere alcuni di quegli elementi metal più pesanti con gli allegri arrangiamenti orchestrali, e speriamo che tu e gli ascoltatori troviate un po’ di gioia in quello che facciamo.

Ci saranno mai EP, LP o full-length basati su personaggi singoli come Blackbeard, Bartholomew Roberts o Ching Shih?

Forse! Per il nostro prossimo album stiamo cercando di esplorare un regno drasticamente diverso che possa aiutarci a separarci dal tema dei pirati. Poi di nuovo, visto quanto se ne è parlato, forse raddoppierò con un EP che sia pieno di spadaccini! Solo il tempo e la birra possono dire cosa c’è in serbo. Cheers!

On a beautiful summer day, I’ve got your promo, an explosion of super energetic pirate metal! How did the band was born and what drives you in the direction (musical, artistic) you have taken?

Let us start with a toast to you and your readers! The initial fermentation of this project started ages ago when two of the members, at that time in a corpse-paint induced black metal band, had the opportunity to open for Korpiklaani on the Portland date of a US tour. It took may years for the idea to fully mature, but we wanted to take our black/death metal roots, combine them with big orchestral arrangements, while also honoring some of the pioneers of folk metal that inspired us to explore that style.

How did you choose the name?

The name was brewed as an inside joke between the same members mentioned above. In this case, the music and lyrical content came first, and we knew Drunkelweizen was the perfect fit. We all have a shared appreciation of beers and alcohol, and the dark wheat German beer (dunkelweizen, just missing that ever important ‘R’) is high up there on our list! It also has a certain ring to it, ever similar to the drunken pirates we are often compared, in Alestorm.

You just released your debut album Pioneers of Alcohol: talk about it and let us know what it means to you.

Pioneers of Alcohol is an ode to those in history whose lives are ever entwined with the godly nectar, alcohol. Each of the initial tracks tells the story of one such great mind throughout history, though not all tales end in the happy fairy tale we would all like to imagine. The final tracks are inspired by some drunken shenanigans of our own, and are a toast to all that is to come!

The songs are longer than the other songs of the genre you play, between five and seven minutes. How were the songs born and did you given yourself some kind of “reference points” while writing?

Darn the long tracks!! Most of the tracks began with the musical composition, with lyrics coming after. In the sense of telling the (mostly true) tales of individuals throughout history, the longer length does certainly allow to delve a bit deeper into their stories. There was plenty of research into each individual (and many others that we simply couldn’t include) to ensure we were able to drunkenly retell their stories.

Let’s focus on the lyrics, from what I understand they talk about characters and places in the world of pirates: is that so? Which are (and why) your favorites?

Walk the plank ye’ swashbucklers! Haha. Despite the fact that we are often classified as “pirate metal”, not a single track actually is about a pirate. The closest would be about Admiral Horatio Nelson (in the song Draining the Cask), who died at sea and is linked to the ever-unfortunate phrase of “sucking the monkey”. The following track, however, is about Patron Saint Brigid of Kildare. Many know the tales of one individual turning water into wine, however two of the miracles St. Brigid performed were turning water into beer! Now that’s a guest I want at my next house party! We certainly have nothing against pirates, and many have great stories we could tell as well; however, the intention was to tell the tales of some (potentially) lesser-known heroes with strict ties to alcohol.

Your work is self-produced: is that a targeted choice?

There’s a certain amount of freedom that comes with DDIY (Drunken Do It Yourself), where every aspect is completed in house among the band. If provided other opportunities we would certainly explore them, however more people involved also means our keg of beer runs dry that much sooner.

Pioneers Of Alchool has just been released: are you already working on the sequel or are you waiting for feedback, proposals or a little time to mature?

We are deep into our sophomore album, and already noodling with the idea of a third. We are definitely welcoming any and all feedback, with song length being highlighted on more than one account, however are creating music that we want to play. Here in Portland where we are from, everyone drinks horrible IPA beers. As a result, that is predominately what all the breweries produce. We don’t want to fall into a similar stance with our music. Lyrically we will be exploring drastically different content, while also trying to bring both the heaviest and most melodic elements we have to date. That is to say, we are taking in all three elements… at least to the extent that our drunken minds will remember to do so.

Pirates, alcohol and metal: are there any other interests outside of these three?

As mentioned in the previous response, lyrically everything is on the table, and we are really excited to show a very different view on the next album! Personally, I’m big into horror movies and spending time with my doggo. One or both might lean into some of the future music. The Finnish have the great saying of Kalsarikänni, or getting drunk at home alone in your underwear. We very much subscribe to that newsletter, and you never know what inspiration will come of it!

What is the US folk metal scene like? Seen from Europe there seems to be very few bands, yet you have no lack of major European tours with numerous dates, which means that the audience is not lacking.

Folk metal certainly isn’t as widely popular here as it is in other areas. With some of the opportunities of opening for said bands when they come through the area, it often isn’t surprising for someone to think we are an unknown member of the tour. It’s a very different element from the standard black or death or hardcore bands that people commonly see, and it can certainly be a fun experience for those who aren’t familiar with it. Especially if a tasty beverage or twelve is involved.

What are the band’s goals? What would you like to do in the future?

Currently focusing on the sophomore album, and really just hoping to get the songs in front of more people. So much of metal is so serious all of the time, that we really just want to provide a space to forget about some of your daily life worries, and have a bit of fun. In the case of Pioneers of Alcohol, maybe you’ll also learn a little bit (and then immediately forget it in a drunken stupor) about some individuals through history.

I’ve listened to your work and I have enjoyed it very much. My question is: have you ever been compared you to other pirate metal bands like Alestorm, Privateers or the Italians Calico Jack? If so, how do you live this comparison?

I am glad you have enjoyed it! And yes, we more commonly are compared to Alestorm or simply referred to as “pirate metal” than we are to anyone/thing else. Alestorm is a master at what they do, so it is certainly a tough element to live up to. As mentioned throughout our interview, we don’t perceive ourselves as swashbucklers and musically are going for a bit darker/heavier overall sound. We want to blend some of those heavier metal elements along with the upbeat orchestral arrangements, and hope you and the listeners find some joy in what we do.

Will there ever be EPs, LPs or full-length albums based on individual characters like Blackbeard, Bartholomew Roberts or Ching Shih?

Possibly! For our follow-up album, we are looking to explore a drastically different realm that may help separate ourselves from the pirate theme. Then again, with how much it has been mentioned, maybe I’ll double down on an EP that goes full on swashbuckler! Only time and beer can tell what is in store. Cheers!
