Intervista: Grimtotem

Mister Folk vi ha presentato i cileni Grimtotem con la recensione del singolo di debutto Invunche, un due pezzi carico di energia e buone idee. Nella lunga intervista che segue sono molti gli argomenti trattati, con particolare interesse verso il significato di testi e copertina; le parole della cantante/chitarrista Carolina Rebolledo fanno trasparire una gran voglia di fare, la passione per la propria cultura e l’amore per il Cile. Oggi si va dall’altra parte del mondo per scoprire una band e una scena troppo poco conosciuta da queste parti, ma assolutamente interessante. Buona lettura!

Questa è la prima intervista italiana per i Grimtotem: per favore, presentate la band ai lettori di Mister Folk.

Per tutti i lettori di Mister Folk, noi siamo i Grimtotem, una band pagan metal fondata nel 2011 vicino al confine di guerra di Bío Bío, Cile. I Grimtotem mischiano influenze tra metal estremo (per di più dall’Europa) ed elementi folk della nostra terra che possono essere riconosciuti nella nostra musica. I contenuti dei testi sono scritti per lo più in spagnolo e alcuni termini e concetti sono in Mapuzungun, una lingua di una dei più grandi gruppi etnici in Cile. Noi speriamo veramente che vi diverta leggere e conoscere qualcosa di nuovo su noi! Come definisci la musica della tua band e quali credi che siano i punti di forza dei Grimtotem?

I Grimtotem sono sicuramente un mix d’influenze e se dobbiamo descrivere la nostra musica, potrebbe essere un tentativo di mischiare elementi dal metal estremo con il folk delle composizioni del suono e del ritmo. Nonostante ciò, molti dei nostri ascoltatori che hanno ascoltato i nostri brani ci hanno detto che ci sono molte più influenze da cercare tra gli altri sottogeneri, come il death o il black tra i più. Noi cerchiamo di diffondere un messaggio a ogni persona che necessita di un’ispirazione o che dimostra interesse nel conoscere le nostre radici e non solo far musica per il semplice piacere di farla. Quindi, uno dei punti di forza che i Grimtotem hanno è che non siamo chiusi di mente per sperimentare con le influenze musicali di ogni membro. Per esempio quando facciamo gli arrangiamenti per le nuove canzoni c’è sempre molto spazio per ogni membro della band per esprimere loro stessi nel loro personale stile di suonare o di scegliere il tipo di suono che gli piace di più. Infatti vogliamo che ognuno si senta a proprio agio nella band nell’aspetto compositivo e questa line up ha lavorato abbastanza bene. Crediamo che ci siano generi “opposti” nelle nostre biblioteche, quindi in questo senso è difficile a volte suonare un genere metal specifico. Un altro punto forte dei Grimtotem è che hanno a che fare con una presenza femminile nella band. Nella scena metal locale non è comune vedere una donna che fa metal, né tanto meno vedere dal vivo una pagan metal band con una frontwoman che contribuisce alla locale scena metal, e anche il modo in cui abbiamo ravvivato la nostra musica per via di questa presenza. Questo genera molto più coinvolgimento e interesse nel pubblico che partecipa ai concerti, perché presentiamo una proposta fuori dallo standard.

Avete da poco pubblicato il singolo Invunche: cosa vuol dire il titolo e quali sono gli obiettivi che vi siete posti?

Il titolo del nostro singolo significa “uomo deforme” in spagnolo. Questa attribuzione appartiene a una leggenda dalla cultura Chiloé del sud del Cile che racconta della creatura mostrata nell’artwork del singolo. Questa creatura non è capace di parlare e comunica solamente tramite ringhi e urli. Invunche è il protettore delle caverne Kalkus di Quicaví e ha la facoltà di vendicarle quando c’è bisogno. Il nostro scopo principale per questo singolo è anticipare qualcosa dal nostro album (di futura pubblicazione, ndMF) nella migliore qualità possibile. Avere materiale di qualità ci permette di promuoverci al meglio, ma anche di provare a diffondere informazioni sulla cultura dei nostri usi e costumi e delle nostre lingue.

Non conoscendo i testi, mi sono concentrato sulla musica. Ammetto che il vostro sound mi ha sorpreso non poco, avete personalità e non temete la sperimentazione, complimenti davvero! Di cosa parlano le canzoni Kütral e Invunche?

Kütral vuol dire “fuoco” in lingua Mapuzungun. L’ispirazione principale per questo pezzo è tratta da una leggenda chiamata “Dei della luce” che narra di come i Mapuche fossero abili a fare il fuoco. In tempi passati, i Mapuche stavano nelle caverne di notte e la maggior parte del cibo che avevano nella loro dieta era crudo. I Mapuche erano molto spaventati dalle eruzioni dei vulcani e dai terremoti che sono molto comuni in quest’area anche oggigiorno. Il testo di Kütral racconta questa legenda e di come i Mapuche sono riusciti ad ottenere il fuoco dalle eruzioni e dai terremoti. Il fatto di avere del fuoco era visto come una benedizione e un buon modo di riscaldarsi e di cucinare il cibo. Ci sono molti aspetti sulla visione del cosmo da menzionare, come passaggi sulla correlazione spirituale tra il sole, la luna, la vita umana prima della scoperta del fuoco. Küyen (la luna) conta i giorni per apparire nella sua forma intera mentre si guarda riflessa nell’oceano per vedere la faccia del sole alcuni giorni o notti al mese. Nel frattempo, gli umani vivevano nella completa oscurità e Madre Terra richiese agli anziani spiriti di avere un’eruzione vulcanica come atto di misericordia e di speranza per loro. Nel caso di Invunche, gran parte del testo è un parallelo tra la storia di Hob della Bibbia e l’apparizione di Invunche sulla faccia della terra. Entrambi rivendicarono al loro creatore e lo maledirono per la loro esistenza. Questa rivendicazione di Invunche al cielo e anche questo maledire l’intero creato, lui stesso e i Kalkus (i maghi) che lo presero per il proprio bene. Invunche vide anche gli orrori dei bianchi nella sua terra, come i genocidi e gli omicidi di massa.

Qual è il significato della copertina?

Come detto nel testo di Invunche, il significato della copertina rappresenta un richiamo alla creazione per la libertà e la liberazione spirituale. A volte tendiamo ad essere egoisti e crudeli con i nostri stessi, con fratelli, sorelle e tutte le creature viventi. La copertina è la riflessione di una creatura sovrumana che è stanca di tutti questi comportamenti ostili ed è chiaro quando rilascia dal suo cuore lo spirito della creazione e la verità di essere ancora vivi. A volte siamo nella sua stessa posizione – abbiamo regali come la musica e la passione per essa, ma siamo coinvolti in sentimenti differenti, il più delle volte odiandoci l’uno con l’altro. Noi ci consideriamo guerrieri, sì, ma a volte cadiamo nell’errore di non combattere per il lato giusto.

Pensi che il folk/pagan metal sia un buon mezzo per raccontare la storia e le tradizioni di determinate nazioni/città/eventi?

Penso che essere interessati alla scena folk/pagan metal è un buon modo per diffondere il mondo della cultura in generale e delle tradizioni di diverse parti del mondo. Dobbiamo partire dalla base che il folk metal incorpora il “folklore” nel metal, e il folklore stesso è incentrato su storie, tradizione, musica e culture di certi posti o luoghi nell’insieme. Per gli ascoltatori del metal, il mix tra elementi folk, diverse composizioni ritmiche, lo stile metal e la lingua utilizzata nei testi può generare un’atmosfera unica che ci fa respirare qualcosa di completamente diverso e di esterno dal nostro modo di vivere. Il folk/pagan metal ci guida verso un viaggio veramente emozionante. d’altro canto, ci possono essere variazioni tra stili visto che non tutte le persone ascoltano metal. Per esempio, ci sono molti artisti nel mondo che diffondono la loro cultura concentrandosi solo sugli elementi folk delle loro parti e delle loro stesse radici. Incredibilmente, questi artisti che sono fuori dal mondo del metal possono gestire il loro messaggio al meglio, ma possono essere tanto forti (o anche più forti) quanto il messaggio di una band metal. Infatti, questi generi calzano perfettamente con le intenzioni menzionate sopra e possono essere usate come una buona fonte per educare gli altri che non hanno mai sentito di specifici posti o eventi.

Vi definite influenzati dal folklore cileno e dalla cultura mapuche: vuoi accennare ai lettori di cosa si tratta e in quale maniera influenzano i Grimtotem?

Il nostro folklore, come anche la cultura Mapuche, hanno un ruolo importante per l’esistenza dei Grimtotem, perché per noi la musica folk/pagan metal è uno scambio costante di informazioni riguardanti qualunque evento da qualunque angolo del mondo, quindi l’ispirazione centrale è venuta fuori basandoci su questa sorta di principio. Oggigiorno ci sono un totale di dieci gruppi etnici in Cile a parte i cileni stessi e crediamo che il nostro paese sia ricco in cultura che noi vogliamo condividere con tutti. I Mapuche appartengono a uno di quei gruppi etnici e sono considerati una minoranza nazionale in Cile. I Grimtotem sono stati fondati nella stessa area dove si tennero i maggiori conflitti. Inoltre, combatterono per oltre 500 anni da quando gli invasori spagnoli arrivarono in questo continente con l’intento di massacrarli tutti (reminder: gli spagnoli NON “scoprirono” solamente l’America come è scritto nei libri di storia). Il loro scopo di recuperare le loro terre rubate e sopravvivere alla repressione attuale della società cilena in generale, perché sfortunatamente qui non c’è abbastanza rispetto per loro. Come non ispirarsi a ciò? Per noi i Mapuche sono veri guerrieri e il rispetto che hanno per la terra è veramente unico. La visione del mondo riguardante i Mapuche e la loro lingua è anche un accurato argomento d’interesse da usare nei contenuti dei testi delle canzoni dei Grimtotem. Tra i Mapuche gli eventi più importanti venivano trasmessi oralmente. Come band stiamo cercando di acquisire la conoscenza dalla loro lingua per essere in grado di trasmettere le loro storie in modo che possiamo recuperare un po’ del meglio dalle nostre radici.

Com’è la scena musicale in Cile? Esiste un movimento folk/pagan metal?

In Cile non c’è al giorno d’oggi un preciso movimento folk/pagan, ma negli anni scorsi era molto più comune vedere eventi che incorporavano band di quei generi. Questa scena è particolarmente piccola e direi che ci sono meno di dieci band che lavorano attivamente per questo genere in tutto il paese; comunque, molte di queste band lavorano separatamente. Nel caso dei Grimtotem finora abbiamo anche noi lavorato indipendentemente, ma prossimamente la band lavorerà in collaborazione con i gruppi Ulkan Newen, Briselas e Knighthood (tutte band folk metal dal Cile) tra le altre formazioni di altri generi in un progetto chiamato Lof Crisol. Vi informeremo come procederà questo movimento, ma servirà principalmente a dare un impulso e supporto alle band per crescere come dovrebbero nella scena musicale cilena.

Cosa pensi dei Folkheim e del loro Napu Ñi Tiam?

Mapu Ñi Tiam dei Folkheim ha dimostrato di essere un lavoro eccezionale. Hanno preso molte risorse dalla nostra cultura in termini di testi e di strumenti folk da ogni angolo del territorio cileno continentale e polinesiano. Qualcosa che mi attrae particolarmente di questo album sono i testi e spero veramente che il resto del mondo possa capirli nel loro significato reale. Musicalmente parlando, ogni risorsa usata calza a pennello con i concetti che hanno provato a implementare creando una buona atmosfera. Mapu Ñi Tiam è infatti il miglior album folk metal rilasciato in questo paese in termini di produzione, background culturale, storia ed eventi dalla nostra terra. Se siete ascoltatori di folk metal e volete imparare qualcosa sul Cile in tutti quegli aspetti menzionati prima, allora ascoltate Mapu Ñi Tiam come una scelta immediata, perché è un pezzo fondamentale della scena folk latino americana.

Come ti sei avvicinata all’heavy metal e al canto?

Ho iniziato con l’heavy metal solo 10 anni fa quando avevo 13 anni, prima di allora mi piaceva ascoltare rock classico. Avevo dei parenti che vivevano nella capitale e ogni volta che li andavo a trovare mi mostravano molte band e dvd live di band metal con stili diversi. Nonostante tutti i classici che avrei potuto ascoltare dai Metallica agli Iron Maiden e così via, io iniziai con i Rammstein. Da allora sono la mia band preferita. Trovo che il tono di voce e il duro accento tedesco e i riff della chitarra all’epoca mi trasmettevano dei sentimenti strabilianti. Pochi anni dopo potei ascoltare più “aggressività” nella musica, ma fu un processo lento. Una volta scoperte band folk e pagan metal, nel 2010 cominciai a chiedermi come potesse suonare il mio growl, o se fosse possibile per una donna fare facilmente del growl, così quello che feci fu prendere e provare una canzone degli Ensiferum chiamata Little Dreamer. Da allora non smisi mai di provare, soprattutto quando i Grimtotem furono fondati. Sono stati sei anni di costante pratica e mi sento molto soddisfatta dei risultati. Comunque, non mi considero una vera cantante perché non ho mai preso lezioni o mi sono fatta supervisionare da qualcuno. Ci sono molti aspetti da migliorare e di cui prendersi cura, e non chiudo la mia mente alla possibilità di iniziare a cantante in clean e di dare differenti atmosfere alle canzoni dei Grimtotem.

Quali sono le voci che ti influenzano maggiormente e chi è il chitarrista che ammiri i più?

Attualmente le voci che mi hanno influenzato sono tutte nel metal estremo. Abbiamo Som Pluijimers (ex Cerebral Bore): la sua voce è assolutamente aggressiva ed è una grande ispirazione per me. Ha un growl veramente profondo e una qualità che non tutte le cantanti dell’extreme metal hanno e non sembra una donna mentre canta. Questa è una delle qualità che sto tentando di imparare ed acquisire per il mio personale stile di canto. Per il lato maschile ICS Vortex è uno dei miei cantanti preferiti, il più delle volte quando lo fa in clean. Sul mio chitarrista preferito non ho una particolare preferenza, quindi parlerò di due chitarristi. Il primo è Jari Maenpää (Wintersun). È sempre un piacere per me guardare le sue performance live e come gestisce i suoi show in generale, e anche il lavoro con la chitarra e gli arrangiamenti in studio. Il suo stile nel suonare è una grande ispirazione per me nei miei doveri di chitarrista e nell’aspetto compositivo per i Grimtotem. In aggiunta, c’è un altro chitarrista che mi piace ascoltare e il suo nome è Andy Timmons. Adoro i sentimenti che mette nei suoi assoli che sono veramente eleganti, e dimostra anche una grande tecnica. Le sue canzoni mi sorprendono veramente.

Perché canti e suoni in una band pagan metal?

Suono e canto in una band pagan metal perché era un sogno da quando ho scoperto il genere e mi sono innamorata immediatamente della musica e di tutto ciò che ne deriva. In quel momento ho deciso che se avessi mai iniziato una carriera musicale, sarebbe dovuto essere un genere che amavo, cercando un modo per ampliare un po’ lo scambio culturale delle informazioni che comporta il folk/pagan. È duro però trovare delle band che provano a suonare questo tipo di genere in genere in Cile. Non rimpiango la scelta con me stessa e non mi arrenderò facilmente.

State lavorando a delle nuove canzoni? Suoneranno come quelle contenute in Invunche? In caso, sarà un nuovo singolo, un EP o un full-length?

La band sta attualmente lavorando su nuove canzoni che faranno parte del nostro full-length di debutto. In termini di composizione, cercheremo di assicurarci che tutte le tracce suonino diverse le une dalle altre in termini di arrangiamento e variazioni che saranno maggiormente udibili quando avrete l’occasione di ascoltarle (spero) presto. In termini di produzione, le tracce contenute in Invunche e le nuove che verranno suoneranno un po’ diverse nell’album, ma in una maniera giusta. Questo non vuol dire che non siamo soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto con il singolo che abbiamo rilasciato, ma ci sono molti aspetti che possono essere fatti meglio, come la maniera in cui la band può suonare in alcune parti della canzone per creare le atmosfere che ci aspettiamo, aggiornamenti nell’attrezzatura utilizzata nel registrare, molti più strumenti folk e altro. Stiamo cercando davvero di ottimizzare meglio i risultati tenendo in considerazione tutti questi elementi.

Come sono i concerti dalle vostre parti? Per noi europei è difficile da immaginare, ma quando lo faccio mi viene da pensare una gran quantità di gente accalcata sotto al palco, con una temperatura infernale! Il pubblico canta/poga, oppure è più concentrato sulla musica?

La nostra scena metal locale è grande, ma devo dire che molte band sono in un livello ancora molto underground. La maggioranza dei luoghi d’incontro o dei bar non hanno molto spazio per contenere il sound massiccio e da killer delle band, ma il supporto dato dal pubblico è buono. Il più delle volte i luoghi d’incontro sono pieni, ma forse l’aspetto più triste è che le band metal spesso non sono pagate per la loro partecipazione agli show. I Grimtotem fanno parte di questa realtà. Ci sono molte persone che partecipano ai concerti che hanno espresso il loro interesse in ciò che facciamo. Abbiamo fatto anche concerti durante i quali la temperatura era caldissima e il coinvolgimento del pubblico era assolutamente ottimo, ma il più delle volte il pubblico mantiene un ruolo passivo e più mirato sulla musica che suoniamo e sullo show in se. A volte la nostra scena metal locale tende a dimenticare che il pubblico andrà a vedere uno show, ma in qualche modo comprendo la situazione, perché i palchi disponibili sono veramente piccoli, per questo diventa molto difficile essere consapevoli di ciò. Sfortunatamente, per anni i Grimtotem sono caduti nello stesso errore di provare le canzoni ma non pianificare come lo show sarebbe stato. Abbiamo potuto realizzare questa situazione quando abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di supportare i Turisas in una data l’anno scorso nella capitale. Quella fu la nostra prima volta in assoluto su un palco più grande e ci sembrava troppo grande per noi, quindi non abbiamo ricevuto molti vantaggi dallo spazio che avevamo per mostrarci come vedevamo di solito negli imponenti concerti metal. Da quell’esperienza ci siamo sforzati di una performance energetica e buona sul palco. Speriamo che questo sia un aspetto che abbiamo migliorato per far sembrare i nostri show più divertenti e professionali.

Vi piacerebbe suonare in Europa? Riuscirete a promuovere Invulche con tour o date nella vostra zona?

Penso che dobbiamo essere onesti riguardo l’idea di suonare in Europa: sarebbe un sogno divenuto realtà! Vedo spesso quanto sia grande la scena folk/pagan e vorremmo esprimere sul palco la nostra proposta musicale e anche la nostra energia che liberiamo sul palco quando suoniamo qui dalle nostre parti. Ci aspettiamo di raggiungere quello scopo dopo l’uscita del nostro full-length di debutto. Per il nostro singolo attuale Invunche non abbiamo ancora pianificato un tour. Dopo l’uscita dell’album ci saranno sicuramente maggiori possibilità di fare un tour.

This is the first Italian interview with Grimtotem: please, introduce the band to Mister Folk’s readers.

For all Mister Folk’ readers, we are Grimtotem, a pagan metal band founded in 2011 in the frontier warfare of Bío-Bío, Chile. Grimtotem mixes influences from extreme metal music (mostly from Europe) and folk elements from our land which can be identified in our music. The lyric content is mostly written in Spanish and also some terms and concepts in Mapuzungun, a language from one the biggest ethnic groups in Chile. We are really looking forward that you enjoy reading and knowing something new about us! Current line up: Carolina Rebolledo: vocals/guitars – Cristian Ruiz: guitars/choirs – Nicolás Molina: keyboards – Rodrigo Castillo: fretless bass – Deathscythe: drums/folk instruments.

How would you label your music? What are, in your opinion, Grimtotem’s strong points?

Grimtotem is certainly a mix of influences and if we have to label our music it might be an attempt to mix elements from extreme metal and the “folk-ness” signifiers of sounds and rhythm patterns. In spite of that, most of our listeners that have heard our tunes have told us that there’s absolut much more to find out from other subgenres, such as death or black metal influences at most. We are looking forward to spreading a message to every person that need a word of inspiration or demonstrate interest in knowing about our roots and not just making music for the only pleasure to do it. Hence, one of the strongest points that Grimtotem has is that we are not closed minded to experiment with each member’s personal influences in music. For example, whenever we make arrangements to the new songs there’s always plenty of space for each member in the band to express themselves in their personal style of playing they have or choosing the type of sound they like most. In fact, we want everyone to feel comfortable in the band in the compositive aspects and this current line up it has worked quite well. We believe there are some truly “opposite” genres in our libraries in those terms, so in that sense it’s hard sometimes to play a very specific genre of metal. Another strong point in Grimtotem has to do with a female fronted presence in the band. In our local scene it is not common to see women into metal, and less common to see live a female fronted pagan metal band contributing to the local metal scene, and also the way we’ve been spicing our music due to that presence. That creates much more engagement and interest for the audience that attend to gigs, because we present a total different proposal out of the standards.

You recently released the single Invunche. What does the title mean? What are your goals?

The title of our single means “deformed man” in Spanish. This attribution belongs to a legend coming from the Chiloé culture in southern Chile that tells about the creature shown in the artwork of the single. This creature is not able to speak and only communicates through growling and screams. Invunche is the protector of the Kalkus’s cave of Quicaví and had the faculty to avenge them when needed. Our main goals for this single is to get something in advance from our debut album in a much better quality. Having a quality material allows us to promote ourselves better as a band, and also keep trying out to spread the word about the culture of our land using of our own language(s).

Since I did not know the lyrics, I focused on music. I have to say that your sound surprised me considerably. You have personality and you are not afraid of experimentation. Congratulations! What are the songs Kütral and Invunche about?

Kütral means “fire” in Mapuzungun language. The main inspiration for this track was taken from a legend called “Gods of light” which tells about how the Mapuche were able to make fire. In past times, the Mapuche used to stay in caves at night and most of the food they had in their daily diet was raw. The Mapuche felt afraid of the volcano eruptions and earthquakes which are both very common to happen in this area even these days. Lyrics in Kütral retell this legend and how the Mapuche could finally manage to get some fire from these eruptions and earthquakes. The fact that they got some fire was seen as a blessing and a fine way to get warm and cook their food. There are so many aspects about the Mapuche cosmovision to mention, such as passages about the spiritual correlation between the sun, the moon, the human life within the discovery of fire. Küyen (the moon) counts days to appear in its entire form while looking itself in the ocean reflection looking forward to seeing the face of the sun some mornings or evenings in the month. Meanwhile, humans were living in full darkness and mother Earth claimed to the ancient spirits to get a volcano eruption as an act of mercy and hope for them. In the case of Invunche, most of the lyrics are a parallel between the Bible´s story of Hob and the appearance of the Invunche in the face of the earth. Both claimed to their creator and cursed them for their existence. This Invunche claims to the sky and also cursed the whole creation, himself and the Kalkus (wizards) who took him for their own good. Invunche also sees the horrors of white people in his land, such as genocide and mass murder.

What’s the meaning of the front cover?

As mentioned in the lyrics of the song Invunche, the meaning of the front cover represents a claim to the creation for freedom and spiritual liberation. Sometimes we tend to be so selfish and cruel with our own brothers, sisters, and every existing creature. The front cover is the reflection of a superhuman creature that is tired of all those hostile attitudes and it is reflected when he releases from his heart the spirit of creation and the truth of still being alive. Sometimes we are in the same position as him – we have the gifts such as music and passion for it, but we are involved in mixed feelings, most of the times hating each other. We consider ourselves as warriors, yes, but sometimes we fall in the mistake of not fighting for the right side.

Do you think that folk/pagan metal is a good way to pass down the stories and traditions of given countries/localities/events?

I think getting into folk/pagan metal scene is a good way to spread the word about culture in general and traditions from different places in the world. We need to start from the basis that folk metal incorporates “folklore” into metal, and folklore itself is mainly focused on stories, tradition, music and culture from a certain place or location as a whole. For metal listeners, the mix between folk elements, different patterns of rhythm, the metal style, and the language expressed on lyrics can generate a unique atmosphere that makes us breathe something complete different and external from our own ways of living. Folk & Pagan metal music guides us to a very exciting journey. On the other hand, there can be variations among styles since not all people listen to metal. For example, there are many artists worldwide that spread the word about their culture focusing only on the folk elements from their location and their roots themselves. Surprisingly, these artists that are out of the metal world can manage to share their message as well, but it can be as strong (or even stronger) than a metal band’s message. In fact, these genres themselves fit perfectly on the intentions mentioned above and can be used as a good source for educating others who have never heard of specific places or events.

You say you are influenced by Chilean folklore and Mapuche culture. Could you give our readers some information about them and explain how they inspire Grimtotem?

Our folklore as well as the Mapuche culture play an important role for the existence of Grimtotem, because for us folk and pagan metal music is a constant exchange of information regarding any event from any corner in this world, so the central inspiration came up based on that sort of principle. Nowadays there’s a total of 10 ethnic groups in Chile apart from the chileans themselves and we believe our location is rich in cultural background that we’d like to share with everyone. The Mapuche belong to one of these ethnic groups and they are considered as a national minority in Chile. Grimtotem was founded in the same area where the main conflicts have been held there. Besides that, they’ve been fighting for over 500 years since the Spanish invaders arrived in this continent with the intention to massacre them all (Reminder: The Spaniards DID NOT just “discovered” America as written in history books). They aim to recover their stolen lands and survive the actual repression from the chilean society in general, because unfortunately there’s no enough respect for them here. How not to get inspiration?. For us the Mapuche are real warriors and the respect they have for the land is very unique. The world view concerning the Mapuche and their language is also a matter of interest that we consider as interesting and accurate to use in the lyric content of Grimtotem songs. Within the Mapuche language the most important events in their culture were transmitted orally. As a band we are really looking forward to acquiring the knowledge from their language and being able to transmit their stories in a manner that we can recover a little bit the best from our roots.

What is the music scene like in Chile? Is there any folk/pagan metal movement?

In Chile there isn’t precisely any specific folk/pagan movement nowadays, but in previous years it was more common to see gigs that incorporated bands of those genres. This scene is particularly small and I’d say there are less than 10 bands working actively for the genre throughout this country; however, most of these bands have been working separately. In the case of Grimtotem since now we’ve been working independently too, but in a very close future the band will be working collaboratively with the bands Ulkan Newen, Briselas and Knighthood (all folk metal bands from Chile) among other bands from other genres in a project called Lof Crisol . We’ll eventually inform how this movement is going to be like, but it will mainly give an impulse and support to these bands to grow as they should into the chilean music scene.

What do you think about Folkheim and their Mapu Ñi Tiam?

Folkheim’s Mapu Ñi Tiam has demonstrated to be an outstanding piece work. They have taken lots of resources from our culture in terms of lyrics and folk instruments from every corner of continental and polynesian chilean territory. Something that attracts me most from this album is the lyric content and I really wish the rest of the world could understand them in its real meaning. Musically speaking, every resource used fits well on the concepts they tried to implement giving a fine atmosphere. Mapu Ñi Tiam is in fact the best folk metal album released in this country in terms of production, cultural background, history and events from our land. If you are a folk metal listener and would like to learn something from Chile in all of these aspects mentioned above, then listen to Mapu Ñi Tiam as an immediate option because it is fundamental piece of Latin American folk scene.

How did you get into heavy metal music and singing?

I started being into heavy metal only 10 years ago when I was 13, before that I was more likely to listen to classic rock. I have some relatives who live in the capital city and whenever I visited them they showed me a lot of bands and live DVDs from metal bands in different styles. Despite of all classics I could hear from Metallica, Iron Maiden and so on, I started off with Rammstein. Until these days, it is one of my all time favorite bands. I found that the vocal tone, the rough accent of the German language and the guitar riffs lead me into a mindblowing feeling at that time. A few years later I could stand more “aggressiveness” in music, but that has been a slow process. Once I discovered folk and pagan metal bands in 2010 I began to wonder how my growls may sound, or if it is possible for a female to get into growling easily, so what I did was to take an Ensiferum song I like called “Little Dreamer”. Since then I never stopped rehearsing, mostly when Grimtotem was founded. It’s been 6 years of constant practice and I feel very satisfied with the results. However, I don’t consider myself as a real singer yet since I have never taken lessons or supervision from anybody. There are certainly many aspects to improve and to take care of, and I don’t close my mind to getting started into clean singing and give a different atmosphere to Grimtotem’s new song.

What voices influence you the most? Who is your favourite guitarist?

Actually the voices that influence me are all into extreme metal music. Here we got Som Pluijmers (ex-Cerebral Bore). Her vocals are absolutely badass and a great inspiration for me. She has a really deep growl and a feature that not all female extreme metal vocalists have and is that she doesn’t sound like a “female” when doing it. That is one of the main features I’ve been trying to learn and acquire to my own style of singing. From the male side ICS Vortex is one of my favorite male singers, mostly when it comes from his clean singing. About my favorite guitar player I don’t have any I particularly like, so I am going to talk about two guitar players. First one is Jari Maenpää (Wintersun). It is always a pleasure for me to watch his live performances and how he manages his show in general, as well as the guitar work and arrangements on studio. His style of playing means an influence for me on my duties as guitar player in the compositive aspects for Grimtotem. Additionally, there is another guitar player I enjoy listening and his name is Andy Timmons. I love the feeling he gives to his solos which are very elegant, and he also demonstrates a really good technique. His songs really blow me away.

Why do you sing and play in a pagan metal band?

I sing and play in a pagan metal band because It’s been a dream since I discovered the genre and fell in love immediately of the music and everything that comes from it. In that moment I decided that if I ever started a music career, it must be from a genre I love and find a way to expand a bit the cultural exchange of information that folk/pagan metal brings. It is also hard to find bands that give their attempts to play this type of genre in Chile at least. I don’t regret at all of taking this challenge with me and I will not give it up very easily.

Are you working on new songs? Will they sound like the tracks included in Invunche? In case, will it be a new single, an EP or a full-length?

The band is currently working on new songs which correspond to our debut full-length album. In terms of composition, we’ll try to make sure that all tracks sound different from each other in terms of arrangements and variations that will be more noticeable when you have the chance to hear them in (I hope) not so far away future. In terms of production, the tracks included in Invunche and the ones to come will sound a little bit different in the album, but in a good way. It doesn’t mean that we’re not satisfied with the results obtained from the single we released, but there are several aspects that can be done better, such as the way the band may sound in some parts of the songs to create the atmosphere we expect, upgrades in the gear used for the recordings, more folk instruments etc. We are really looking forward to optimize better the results taking into consideration all these elements.

What are the gigs like where you live? As a European, I cannot visualize the context properly, but, when I try to do it, I imagine a big crowd under the stage and with a temperature hot as hell! Does the audience sing/mosh, or is it focused mainly on music?

Our local metal scene is big, but I must say most of the bands are still in a more underground level. The great majority of venues or bars have not plenty of space to get a massive and killer sound for the bands, but the support given to local metal bands from the target audience is good in general. Most of the time the venues are full, but maybe the saddest aspect is that metal bands almost never get paid for their participation in the shows. Grimtotem takes part of the same reality. There are many people who attend to gigs and have expressed their interest in what we do. We have also had gigs in which the temperature is hot as hell and the engagement with the audience is absolutely great, but most of the times the audience maintain a more passive role and get more focused on the music we play and the show itself. Sometimes our local metal scene tend to forget that the audience is going to see a show, but in somehow I can understand the situation, because the stages available in the venues are very small so it gets more difficult to be more conscious about it. Unfortunately, for years Grimtotem also fell in same mistake of only rehearsing the songs but not planning how the show is going to be like. We could realize about the situation when we had the chance to support Turisas last year in a jam to the capital city. That was our first time ever in a bigger stage and the stage itself seemed too big for us in that sense, so we didn’t take much advantage of the space we had to show off as we normally see in massive metal shows. Since that experience we’ve been making our efforts to bring a good and energetic performance on stage. Hopefully that’s an aspect we’ve been improving to make our show look more entertaining and professional.

Would you like to play in Europe? Will you be able to promote Invunche with tours and dates in your area?

I think we have to be honest about the idea of playing in Europe: It would be a dream came truth!. I see very often how big is the folk/pagan metal scene and we’d love to express on stage our proposal in music and also the energy we release on stage when we play here in our local scene. We expect to accomplish that goal after our debut full-length album comes out. About our current single Invunche, we have not planned a tour for it yet. After the album release there will be more touring possibilities for sure.
