Intervista: Lindy-Fay Hella

Seafarer è un gran bel disco, diverso da quanto trattato solitamente su queste pagine, ma assolutamente da scoprire e fare proprio. Lindy-Fay Hella ha stupito molte persone con il suo primo disco solista e proprio la release della Vàn Records è al centro della chiacchierata avvenuta con la cantante norvegese tramite una videochiamata WhatsApp. Parlare con lei è stato un grande piacere e alla fine è uscito qualcosa anche sui Wardruna…

La tua musica è molto toccante ed è difficile trattenere le lacrime mentre scorrono le note del tuo primo album solista. Come e quando hai iniziato a cantare?

Ero una bambina molto tranquilla e timida e amavo la musica, quindi l’ascoltavo molto. Ho iniziato a cantare presto perché la musica è sempre stata presente nella mia vita famigliare, sia da parte di madre che di padre. Ogni volta che incontravo mio cugino ascoltavamo musica insieme. Mio cugino, che ha dieci anni più di me, amava molto Brenda Lee (una cantante americana che ha inciso ben ventinove album in studio, ndMF), quindi voleva che gli cantassi quel tipo di musica. Ero riluttante, come ti ho detto ero timida, ma lui ha insistito, così alla fine l’ho fatto. Un giorno, avevo otto anni, mio cugino mi ha detto “Lindy, sei davvero brava! Sono abbastanza sicuro che da grande sarai su un palco, sarai una cantante”.

Come sei arrivata al tuo disco solista Seafarer?

In realtà, prima che il lavoro fosse fatto, avevo la sensazione che dovevo farlo. Lavoro con la musica da oltre venti anni e ho sempre composto molte cose che non ho mai pubblicato, sempre per la timidezza che dicevamo prima. Nonostante questo, due anni fa, quando ho sentito la necessità di realizzare qualcosa di mio, ho iniziato da zero componendo questo album e alla fine la sensazione che ho provato è stata di sollievo. Ho sentito che l’intero processo mi ha aiutato nel guadagnare fiducia e le successive esperienze sarebbero state ancora migliori. In più ho lavorato con amici, dal momento che i musicisti coinvolti sono persone a me molto care, così le sensazioni e le vibrazioni sono state molto molto positive.

Nei testi parli spesso dell’Otherworld. Potresti dirci cosa significa per te o se ritieni che ci sia una connessione tra questa vita e quella dopo la morte?

Hai davvero centrato il messaggio del mio album, dal momento che parla esattamente di quello, l’Otherworld, quello dopo la morte o di un’altra dimensione, qualunque cosa sia là fuori. La consapevolezza della sua esistenza è stata in me fin da quando ero bambina e non l’ho mai trovata spaventosa. Sfortunatamente circa due anni fa, mentre stavo iniziando a lavorare su questo album, ho perso uno dei miei migliori amici, quindi quella sensazione di connessione con l’otherworld è diventata più forte. Sebbene abbia lasciato questo pianeta, non ho mai avuto la sensazione che la sua energia sia completamente svanita. Durante la vita ho avuto visioni di cose che non posso spiegare completamente e la mia curiosità per questo Otherworld la si trova sia nella musica che nei testi. Se ascolti attentamente, noterai che i testi di questo album spesso ripetono le stesse cose e questo è intenzionale. Si può costruire una storia enorme con pochissime parole. Dipende dalla tua immaginazione. Anche personalmente, ripetendo mi aiuta a entrare in un certo mood.

La copertina del tuo album ha colori intensi e il suo stile è molto diverso dalle altre cover rock/metal/ambient. Come sei arrivata a questa scelta grafica?

Tanto per cominciare, sono spesso associata con la scena rock e heavy metal perché provengo da Bergen e passo molto tempo con musicisti di quel tipo. Apprezzo il loro grande lavoro, ma non è la mia musica: sono persone molto amichevoli e inclusive, quindi siamo solo amici intimi! L’immagine della copertina del mio album proviene da una foto fatta con un cellulare durante una vacanza con il mio buon amico Kristian (Eivind Espedal, aka Gaahl, ex Wardruna, ex Gorgoroth, ndMF) e un terzo amico comune. È stata scattata in una valle molto speciale, difficile da raggiungere – devi anche prendere una barca per arrivarci – quindi è un posto con un’energia davvero forte e abbiamo scattato una foto come ricordo. Quando l’ho visto a casa, ho deciso che volevo che fosse la copertina dell’album, perché ricordava le belle emozioni di quel giorno, in quel luogo magico. Ho chiesto al terzo amico di modificare i colori nello stile degli anni ’70, pensando che il risultato finale sarebbe stato un mix equilibrato di finzione e realtà.

Mentre ascoltavo Seafarer, ho avuto l’impressione che alcune sonorità avessero le stesse sonorità dei Wardruna, il tuo gruppo principale. Pensi che potrebbe esserci una loro naturale influenza sul tuo lavoro?

Beh, lavoro con la mia voce da più di vent’anni ormai, a volte solo come “uno strumento” per le persone con cui lavoravo, dato che dovevo solo cantare ciò che mi era stato chiesto, nel modo in cui era stato pianificato. Un esempio è With Everburning Sulphur Unconsumed che ho cantato per i Darkend. Ci siamo incontrati grazie ad amici comuni qui a Bergen e mi hanno inviato una canzone chiedendomi se potevo fare alcuni cori e ho detto “sì, certo che posso farlo!”. Nel mio canto ci sono anni di allenamento, quindi se ora, per esempio, voglio cantare con forza, ho sviluppato un modo personale di farlo, che può essere riconoscibile, ma ho iniziato a sviluppare per conto mio questa tecnica venti anni fa, prendendo ispirazione dalla musica tribale. Se aggiungi che canto con i Wardruna da quindici anni, dall’inizio della storia, è facile capire che la mia identità può essere facilmente connessa con la musica che produco con loro come gruppo. Inoltre, tutti i musicisti coinvolti in questo album sono stati liberi di esprimersi come si sentivano, non ho dato alcuna restrizione, quindi l’intero processo è uscito naturalmente, illuminando la natura e il legame di tutti.

Nonostante il vasto pubblico che hai in Italia, non ti abbiamo ancora sentito cantare qui. Pensi che in futuro saremo in grado di godere della tua voce incantevole su un palco con luci soffuse e candele a Roma o Milano?

(Sorride) Grazie per i tuoi complimenti! Mi piacerebbe molto venire a cantare in Italia, a dire il vero. Penso che parlerò presto di questa idea con i miei manager, quindi chi lo sa? Forse in un prossimo futuro ci incontreremo in Italia!

C’è un altro album solista nella tua mente o è troppo presto per pensarci ?

In realtà ho lavorato in studio con i Wardruna nell’ultimo mese o giù di lì, quindi ho in programma di realizzare un nuovo album solista nel 2021. Questo è il piano, almeno!

Vorrei sottolineare, con grande piacere, che sei sempre gentile con i tuoi fan. Ho notato che rispondi sempre con cura a ogni commento su Facebook, che al giorno d’oggi non è comune, soprattutto tra i personaggi famosi. Lo apprezzo molto e ancora di più il tempo che hai dedicato a questa intervista, grazie!.

Grazie, ma penso che sia il minimo che dovrei fare. Le idee e i commenti di tutti sono i benvenuti e tendo ad ascoltarli attentamente. Voglio davvero che tutti si sentano liberi di esprimere i propri sentimenti, non voglio essere considerato ostile. È stato bello parlare con te!

Your music is really touching and the combination of sound, lyrics and voice that you have chosen for your first solo album makes it difficult to hold back the tears while listening. When and how did you start to sing?

I was a very shy, quiet child and I loved music, so I used to listen to it a lot. I started singing early, because music has always been present in my family life, both on my mother’s and father’s side. Every time I met my cousin, we used to listen music together. My cousin, who is about ten years older than me, was very fond of Brenda Lee, so he wanted me to sing that kind of music for him. I was reluctant, as I told you I was shy, but he insisted, so once I finally did it. One day, I was about 8, my cousin told me: “Lindy, you are really good! I am pretty sure that you will be on a stage when you grow older, you will become a vocalist.”

How were you inspired for your solo album, Seafarer?

Actually, before the work was done, I had the feeling that it had to be done. I’ve been working with music for more than 20 years and I’ve composed many things that I have never released, always because of the shyness we were talking about before. Despite this, two years ago, when I felt the urge to produce something mine, I started from scratch in composing this album and in the end the feeling has been of relief. I felt that the whole process had helped me to gain confidence and that the following experiences would have been still better. What’s more, I have worked with friends, since all the musicians involved are people who are very dear to me, so the feeling and the vibes have been very very positive.

In the lyrics you often speak about the Otherworld. Could you tell us what it means for you, or if you feel there is a connection between this life and the one after death?

You really nailed the message of my album, since it speaks exactly about that, the other-world, the one after death or another dimension Whatever it is that is out there. The awareness of its existence has been in me since I was a child and I have never found it spooky. Unfortunately around two years ago, while I was starting to work on this album, I lost one of my best friends, so that feeling of connection with the other-world has become stronger. Though he has left this planet, I have never had the feeling that his energy is completely gone. During life i`ve had visions of things that I can not fully explain and my curiosity for this Otherworld is taken into both music and lyrics. If you listen, you notice that some words and sentences are repeated. This is intentional. It can be build a huge story around just very few words. It depends on your own imagination. Also personally, repeating help me get into a certain mood.

The cover of your album has intense colours and its style is quite different from the other rock or metal covers. How did you get to that graphic choice?

To start with, I am often associated with the heavy metal rock wave because I am from Bergen and I spend a lot of time with musicians of that kind. I do appreciate their great work, but it’s not my music: they are very friendly, inclusive people, so we are just close friends! The image of the cover of my album comes from a picture taken with a mobile phone during a holiday with my good friend Kristian (Eivind Espedal, aka Gaahl, ex Wardruna, ex Gorgoroth, ndMF) and a third common friend. It’s been taken in a very special valley, difficult to reach -you even need to take a boat to get there- so it’s a place with a really strong energy and we took a picture as memory. When I saw it at home, I decided I wanted it to be the cover of the album, because it recalled the beautiful emotions of that day, in that magical place. I asked the third friend to edit the colours in the 70’s style, thinking that the final result would be a balanced mixture of fiction and reality.

While listening to Seafarer I was under the impression that some sonorities had the same taste of the Wardruna’s, your group. Do you think that there might be a natural influence from them on your work?

Well, I’ve been working with my voice for more than twenty years now, sometimes being just “an instrument” for the people I was working with, since I only had to sing what I was asked, in the way that had been planned. An example is With Everburning Sulphur Unconsumed that I’ve sung for Darkend. We met thanks to common friends here in Bergen and they sent me a song asking wether I could do some choirs and I said “yes for sure I can do this!”. In my singing there are years of practice, so if now for example I want to sing strongly, I have developed a personal way of doing it, that can be recognisable, but started to develop this high volume singing over twenty years ago on my own, by taking inspiration from tribal music. If you add that I have been singing with Wardruna for 15 years, It’s easy to understand that my identity can be easily connected with the music I produce with them as a group. Furthermore, all the musicians involved in this album have been free to express themselves as they felt, I didn’t give any restrictions, so the whole process has come out naturally, enlightening everyone’s nature and bond.

Despite the wide audience you have in italy, we haven’t heard you singing here yet. Do you think that the in future we will be able to enjoy your enchanting voice on a stage with dim lights and candles in Rome or Milan?

(Smiles) Thank you for your compliments! I would really love to come and sing in Italy, to be honest. I think I will soon speak about this idea with my managers, so who knows? Maybe in a close future we will meet in Italy!

Is there another solo album in your mind or is it too soon to think about it?

Actually I’ve been working in studio with Wardruna for the last month or so, so I’m planning to come up with a new solo album in 2021. That’s the plan, at least!

I would like to underline, with great pleasure, that you are always kind to your fans. I’ve noticed that you always answer with care to each comment on Facebook, which nowadays is not common, above all among famous people. I really appreciate it and still more the time you have dedicated to this interview.

Thank you, but I think that it’s the least I should do. Everybody’s ideas and comments are welcome and I tend to listen to them carefully. I really want everybody to feel free to express their feelings, I don’t want to be considered hostile. It’s been nice talking with you!
