Gli Equilibrium sono una delle band con maggiore visibilità in ambito folk metal. Autori di tre dischi che hanno conquistato i cuori di tantissimi ragazzi, si apprestano a registrare il quarto full lenght (previsto per il 2014) e propongono un antipasto non male come l’EP Waldschrein. Il batterista Hati si è mostrato molto gentile e loquace nello rispondere sia alle domande musicali (Equilibrium, Krampus e Viscera Trail) che a quelle più personali. Buona lettura!

Iniziamo parlando di te: come ti sei avvicinato alla batteria e all’heavy metal?
L’heavy metal è entrato nella mia vita quando avevo circa otto anni. Era un’altra sera qualunque e stavo facendo zapping tra i canali e capitai su MTV (che trattava effettivamente musica allora, e non i reality o i programmi che propone oggi). Comunque, quando presi il canale MTV c’era un live dei Pantera. Non avevo idea di cosa stessi guardando ma ho visto Dimebag Darrell con la sua chitarra straordinaria e i capelli lunghi come un ninja e quell’immagine per me era affascinante e probabilmente la cosa più straordinaria che avessi visto fino ad allora nella mia vita! Da allora ho solo voluto esplorarla anche se non ero mai stato vicino alla musica… è stata solo questa immagine forte e potente ad avere un forte impatto su di me. da allora sono stato risucchiato e ho sviluppato una vera passione per questa musica. Cosi per la batteria, quando ero al settimo anno avevo questa “nuova classe” nella scuola media aperta per gli studenti eccellenti con “orientamento musicale” e fui accettato. Dovevamo scegliere uno strumento e anche prendere parte nell’orchestra locale… e quando ho visto tutti gli strumenti ho detto “fanculo questa merda, non suonerò una cazzo di tuba o una tromba”, cosi batteria/percussioni erano effettivamente l’opzione naturale per me come ho realizzato che ad un certo punto avrei potuto suonare metal con essa J
Cosa sognavi quando hai iniziato a suonare? Semplicemente suonare con gli amici, diventare famoso, andare in tournée per il mondo con il tuo gruppo?
Per me è stata la prima volta in cui sono salito su un palco per suonare con una band credo. La sensazione, l’energia, l’eccitazione e le vibrazioni che ho avuto prima, durante e dopo lo show erano incredibili e sapevo che era ciò che avrei voluto fare nella vita più a lungo che potessi e per quanto possibile. Non pensavo all’essere famoso (ancora penso di non esserlo). La prima band con la quale ho suonato era una band alternative metal con una cantante femminile, NON ESATTAMENTE il mio ideale ma potrei ancora divertirmi molto a suonare le canzoni. Dopo questa band mi sono unito ai Viscera Trail con i quali ancora suono oggi. È una band brutal death/grind e mi piacciono molto il death e il brutal perciò direi che è stata la “prima volta” in cui ho suonato ciò che sognavo. Ho ancora questa fantasia di andare in scena con un corpse paint totale e suonare raw black metal in un fiordo in Norvegia (mi piace molto anche il black metal) ma credo resterà solo una fantasia J
Suoni con gli Equilibrium dal 2010 e tra pochi mesi uscirà il nuovo album della band, il primo con te come batterista: emozionato? Csa provi quando ci pensi?
Sì, suono con gli Equilibrium dal 2010 ma non ho mai registrato la batteria per la band. Quando sono entrato loro avevano finito le registrazioni di batteria per Rekreatur e la scadenza per consegnare l’album finito alla Nuclear Blast era già molto vicino per cui semplicemente non c’era tempo per ri-registrarlo. Per Waldschrein non ho registrato la batteria dato che era stata stabilita da René (chitarrista e compositore). Per la prossima uscita degli Equilibrium il piano non è ancora del tutto chiaro per quanto riguarda le registrazioni di batteria. Può darsi che saranno di nuovo assegnate a René a causa di alcuni vincoli e altre circostanze perciò è ancora un mistero, vediamo cosa succederà!
Waldschrein è il classico EP “antipasto” del disco stesso. Mi è piaciuto perché c’è un po’ di tutto (vecchie canzoni, anteprime ecc.): puoi dirci qualcosa del nuovo CD in uscita nel 2014?
Innanzitutto sono felice di sentire che ti è piaciuto Waldschrein. È stato un EP di successo considerando che ai fan e a molta gente è piaciuto perciò credo sia una buona indicazione che i nostri fan apprezzano ciò che stiamo facendo e ancora hanno fede e credono negli Equilibrium. Inoltre è sicuro che saranno più che felici con l’album completo in arrivo! Posso dirti molte cose riguardo il nuovo album ma queste sono solo parole insignificanti. Penso sia meglio lasciare un po’ di mistero e lasciare che l’attesa, l’anticipazione e l’immaginazione dei fan facciano il lavoro J
Qual è il disco degli Equilibrium che preferisci? Turis Fratyr, Sagas o Rekreatur?
Hmm… è difficile, ciascun album ha la sua unicità e ognuno per me riguarda un diverso periodo di tempo con diverse emozioni e sensazioni che mi vengono in mente se li ascolto, ma se dovessi sceglierne solo uno andrei probabilmente su Sagas.
Qual è la tua posizione negli italiani Krampus? Mesi fa sei stato presentato come il nuovo batterista, ma a luglio Merlin Sutter degli Eluveitie ha registrato due nuove canzoni, perché?
Per quanto riguarda i Krampus è una “triste storia” e le ragioni sono tempo e logistica. Perciò fondamentalmente non suono nel Krampus benché siamo ovviamente buoni amici e abbiamo buoni rapporti. È finita in modo davvero amichevole e professionale dato che entrambe le parti hanno realizzato che non fosse fattibile date le circostanze. Merlin ha fatto un gran lavoro con le nuove canzoni e mi piace davvero il risultato! Credo che cresceranno e avranno il riconoscimento che meritano!
Sicuramente hai sentito la canzone Paralysis messa online dalla band a settembre, che ha provocato diverse reazioni: chi apprezza il sound moderno metalcore del pezzo e chi li accusa di non doversi etichettare come “folk metal band”. Cosa ne pensi?
Beh, come ho detto prima, mi piace la nuova direzione dei Krampus. Penso sia più spingente ed effettivamente “moderna”. Penso che le band abbiano bisogno di evolversi, di scoprirsi e reinventarsi nel tempo, e non solo suonare ciò che le persone si aspettano che suonino. I Krampus hanno mantenuto gli “elementi folk” ma hanno aggiornato la loro musica con un’attitudine differente e, a mia umile opinione, più matura. So che ne sono contenti e questa è la cosa più importante.
Cos’è per te il folk metal?
Non penso di avere una definizione di “folk metal” e ad essere onesto non sono uno di quei grandi fan di tutte queste definizioni. La parola “folk” deriva dal tedesco e significa “popolo”… credo che quando si parla di musica “folk” o “world music” si associa alla musica “autentica” nel senso che differenti nazioni con diverse storia/cultura/lingua ecc. hanno i loro temi e argomenti di cui hanno raccontato e cantato attraverso il tempo usando i loro strumenti “autentici” e le loro melodie distinte. Quando combini QUESTO con ciò che conosciamo come metal, ottieni (credo) il Folk Metal.
Questa è probabilmente la più grande stronzata che io abbia mai detto, eheh…
Suoni anche con la band brutal Viscera Trail della tua terra natale, Israele. Come suoni in tre gruppi in tre diversi Paesi?
Come sappiamo da ora non ci sono i Krampus in questa equazione. Viaggio molto per suonare con gli Equilibrium perciò in questo senso è abbastanza impegnativo ma fattibile. Avere due band attive può essere una rottura a volte, ma ne vale decisamente la pena! Mi piace suonare cose diverse con persone diverse, penso che mi arricchisca e dia un po’ più gusto alle cose. Effettivamente ho un altro progetto che sarà pubblicato il prossimo anno e per di più sono anche uno studente perciò… yeah… sono un’ape laboriosa 🙂
Suoni in gruppi molto diversi tra loro: suppongo, quindi, che tu abbia gusti musicali abbastanza ampi, non è cosi? Quali sono i generi e i gruppi che ascolti di più?
È vero, effettivamente può piacermi pressoché qualunque genere di musica, mi piace essere mentalmente aperto sulla musica e sulle cose in generale. Penso sia una questione di atteggiamento nella vita. Per esempio probabilmente non ascolterei Beyonce da solo a casa ma potrebbe piacermi la sua musica se viene messa da qualche parte. L’atteggiarsi ad essere oscuro e malefico è morta anni fa… ad essere giusto ascolto solo metal per la maggior parte del tempo e dovrei dire che dopo tutti questi anni ad ascoltare ciò che c’è li fuori dovrei dire che sono un tipo più che orientato al “death & brutal metal” o “extreme metal”. Mi piacciono quasi tutti i generi metal ma penso che death/brutal siano un po’ al di sopra 🙂
Quali sono i batteristi che ammiri di più e chi ti ha ispirato da giovane?
A dirti la verità ci sono TANTI batteristi superbi ed eccellenti lì fuori. Siamo influenzati da tutto ciò che facciamo o esperiamo nella vita e la musica e i batteristi rientrano in questa categoria e perciò credo ce ne siano molti!!! Non sono mai stato troppo colpito dai batteristi metal, non perché non siano bravi, alcuni sono veri animali! Ma sono più influenzato da drummer creativi e groovy come i batteristi latini, gospel e funk. Blasting, grinding, fast doubles e tecniche folli super duper non sono mai state il mio obiettivo. È solo un significato e non lo scopo in sé. So che è strano, lo dico io che suono con una band brutal death metal, ma di nuovo come ho detto, essere veloce e avere una buona tecnica sono i soli strumenti che un batterista ha.
Potendo scegliere una delle tue band preferite, con chi suoneresti?
Se intendi con quale band suonerei se me ne fosse data la possibilità dovrei andare per i Metallica… perché…. fottuti Metallica… penso non ci sia nemmeno il minimo bisogno di spiegare il cazzo di motivo 🙂
Ora sei un batterista conosciuto nella scena folk metal, ma chi è Hati nella vita di tutti i giorni? Hai hobby e passioni al di fuori della musica?
Beh, direi che Hati è un tipo davvero semplice… 🙂 Mi piace andare fuori con gli amici, mi piace fare surf in ogni momento dato che vivo molto vicino alla spiaggia. Ho fatto karate per diversi anni e sono cintura nera, quindi sono effettivamente un ninja part time… mi piace fare sport e sono nella healty nutrition. a parte il fatto che sono anche uno studente, questo è il mio terzo e ultimo anno spero di avere io mio B.A il prossimo ottobre e allora potrò aggiungere anche il titolo “brillante” al mio curriculum, eheh!

Beh il mio messaggio generale al mondo sarebbe “tette” e poiché l’Italia è parte del mondo dirò “tette” ora come messaggio all’intera nazione italiana. A parte questo, vorrei ringraziarvi tutti ovviamente per il supporto! Senza persone come voi, io e le mie band saremmo davvero persone sole, depresse e sole, eheh!

Let’s start talking about you: how did you get the drums and heavy metal?
Well heavy metal came into my life when I was about 8 I guess. It was just another random evening and I was just zapping through the channels and then I got to MTV (which was actually about music back then and not about reality and similar trashy pop culture shows it has today). Anyway, when I got to the MTV channel there was a live gig of Pantera. I had no idea what I was watching but I saw Dimebag Darrell with his cool guitar and long hair shredding like a ninja and that image to me was enchanting and probably the coolest thing I saw until that point in my life! From then on I just wanted to explore it even though I didn’t even get the music… it was just this strong and powerful image that had a strong impact on me. Since then I just got sucked into it and developed a true passion for this music. As for drums, when I was in the 7th grade we had this “new class” at middle school that was opened for excel students with an “orientation to music” and I got accepted. We had to choose and instrument and also take part in the local orchestra… so when I saw all the instruments I said “fuck that shit, I’m not gonna play a fucking Tuba or a Trumpet” so drums/percussions were actually the natural option for me as I realized I could play metal at some point with it J
When did you start playing what you dreamed? Simply play with friends, become famous, touring the world with your band?
For me it was the first time I went on stage playing with a band I guess. The feeling, the energy, the excitement and the vibes I got before, during and after the show was incredible and I knew that it’s what I would like to do in life as long as I can and as much as I can. I didn’t think about being famous (which I still think I’m not). The first band I played with was an alternative metal band with a female singer actually, not EXACTLY my cup of tea but I could still enjoy playing the songs very much. After this band I joined Viscera Trail which I still play there today. It’s a brutal death/grind band and I like death metal and brutal very much so I would say this was the “first time” that I got to played what I dreamed about. I still have this fantasy of going on stage with a full corpse paint and play raw black metal inside a cave in Norway (as I like Black metal very much as well) but I guess it will just stay as a fantasy J
You play with Equilibrium since 2010 and in a few months will be released the band’s new album, the first with you as drummer: excited? What sensations do you feel when you think about it?
Yes, I play with Equilibrium since 2010 but I never recorded drums for the band. When I joined it was just after they finished with the drum recordings for Rekreatur and the deadline for delivering the finished album to the Nuclear Blast was already very close so there was simply no time to re-record it. For Waldschrein I didn’t record the drums as they were programmed by René (guitarist and composer). As for the next release of Equilibrium the plan is still not entirely clear about the drum recordings. It could be that they will be programmed as well by René due to some constraints and other circumstances so it is still a mystery, let’s see how things will develop!
Waldschrein is the classic EP “appetizer” of the disc itself. I liked it because there is a bit ‘of everything (old songs, previews etc..). Can you tell something about the new CD coming out in 2014?
First of all I’m glad to hear u liked Waldschrein. It was a successful EP concerning the fans and a lot of people liked it so I guess it’s a good indication that our fans like what we our doing and still have the faith and believe in Equilibrium. Moreover we can be assured that they will be more than happy with the upcoming full album! I can tell you a lot of things about the new album but these are just meaningless words. I think it is better to leave it a bit mysterious/unrevealed and let the wait, anticipation and the fans imagination do the work 🙂
What is the Equilibrium’s disc that you prefer? Turis Fratyr, Sagas or Rekreatur?
Hmm… that’s a hard one, every album has its own uniqueness and each and every album for me relates to a different period of time with different emotions and feelings that come to my mind as I listened to it but if I will have to choose only one I would probably go with Sagas.
What is your position in the Italian Krampus? Months ago you were presented as the new drummer, but in July Merlin Sutter of Eluveitie recorded two new songs, why?
Regarding Krampus it is kind of a “sad story” and the reasons for that are time and logistics. So basically I’m not playing with Krampus though we are of course still good friends and have good contacts. It ended in a very friendly and professional manner as both sides realized it can’t be done under the circumstances. Merlin did a great job with the new songs and I really like the outcome! I believe they will get bigger and have the recognition they deserve!
Surely you’ve heard the song Paralysis put online by the band in September, provoking reactions which are very different: those who appreciate modern metalcore sound of the song and who accuses you of not having to label as “folk metal band.” What do you think?
Well as I said before, I like the new Krampus direction. I think it’s more kicking and indeed “modern”. I think bands need to evolve, discover and re-invent themselves along the time and not just play what other people expect from them to play. Krampus did maintain the “folk elements” but upgraded their music with a different and to my humble opinion more mature attitude. I know they are happy with it and that’s the most important thing.
What is, for you, the folk metal?
I don’t think I have a definition for “folk metal” and to be honest I’m also not that of a big fan of all these definitions. The word “folk” derived from German which mean “people”. I guess when one talks about “folk music” or “world music” it is being connected to “authentic music” in the sense of different nations with different history/culture/language etc. have their own themes and topics they talked and sang about throughout the times using their own “authentic” instruments and their own distinguished melodies. When you combine THIS with what we know as “metal” u get (I guess) Folk Metal.
That is probably the biggest bullshit I’ve ever said, hehe…
You play even with the brutal band Viscera Trail of your homeland, Israel. How do you play in three groups of three different countries?
So as we know by now there is no Krampus in that equation. I do travel a lot to play with Equilibrium so in that sense it is quite challenging but doable. Having two active bands can be a pain in the ass sometimes but it’s definitely worth it! I enjoy playing different stuff with different people, I think it only enriches me and spice things a bit more. I actually have another Project than hopefully will be published next year and on top of that I’m also a student so…. yeah….. I’m a busy bee 🙂
You play in groups very different from each other, I suppose, then, that you have rather broad taste in music, is it? What are the kinds and groups who listen to the most?
It is true… I actually can enjoy almost every type of music as I like to be open minded about music and about things in general. I think it’s a matter of attitude in life. For example I would probably not listen to Beyonce alone at home but I can enjoy her music if it is being played somewhere. The pose of being all dark and evil died years ego… To be fair I listen only to metal probably most of the time and I would have to say that after all these years of listening to most of what is out there I would have to say I’m more of a “death & brutal metal” or “extreme metal” oriented kind of guy. I like almost of metal genres but I think death/brutal is a bit above all 🙂
What are the drummers that you most admire and who inspired you as a young man?
That’s a question I get quite a lot and to tell you the truth there are A LOT of superb and excellent drummers out there. We are being influenced by almost everything that we do or experience in life so also music and drummers fall into that category so I guess there are a lot! I was never too impressed by metal drummers… not because they are not good, some of them are fucking animals! But I was more influenced by creative and groovy drummer such as Latin drummers, Gospel drummers, Funk drummers etc… Blasting, grinding, fast doubles and super duper crazy techniques were never my goal. It’s just a meaning to an end and not the purpose itself. I know it’s weird I say it as I play with a brutal death metal band but still as I said, being fast and have a cool technique are only tools a drummer have.
By being able choose one of your favorite bands, how would you like to play?
If you mean with which band would I like to play given the opportunity I would have to go with Metallica… because dude…. fucking Metallica… I think there is not even a small need to explain fucking why 🙂
Now you are a well-known drummer in the folk metal scene, but who is Hati every day? Do you have hobbies and passions outside music?
Well, I would say Hati is a very basic kind of guy… 🙂 I like to chill out with friends, I like to surf every now and then as I live very close to the beach. I used to practice karate for many years and I have a black belt so I’m actually a part time ninja. I like to do sports very much and I’m into healthy Nutrition. Apart from that I’m also a student, this is my third and last year so hopefully I will have my B.A by next October and then I will be able to add the title “smart ass” to my resume as well, eheh!
Thank you for the interview, do you have a message for your italian fans?
Well my general message to the world would be “boobs” and since Italy is part of the world I will totally say boobs now as a message to the entire Italian nation. Apart from that I would like to thank you all of course for your support! Without people like you, me and my bands would be probably very lonely, depressive and boring people, eheh!
