Gli Heathen Foray hanno pubblicato da pochi mesi Inner Force, terzo disco e migliore in carriera del combo austriaco, primo ad essere autoprodotto. Ho fatto alcune domande al frontman Robert Schroll per capire, tra le altre cose, le motivazioni che hanno portato la band a questa scelta.

Sono passati tre anni esatti dalla vostra ultima release: cosa è accaduto in questo tempo nella famiglia Heathen Foray?
Un po’ di birre, un po’ di party, un po’ di concerti e chiaramente abbiamo lavorato per realizzare Inner Force! Abbiamo avuto alcuni cambiamenti di formazione: Alex, fratello di Max, è alla seconda chitarra e la nuova potenza dietro la batteria è Markus Kügerl. Si sono integrati molto bene con il resto della band.
I primi due dischi sono stati pubblicati da Black Bards, mentre Inner Force è autoprodotto. Come mai questa scelta? Il motivo è che l’etichetta tedesca non dà segni di vita da oltre un anno?
Abbiamo deciso di autoprodurci in quanto volevamo avere maggiore libertà. Facciamo e confezioniamo la musica che suoniamo, e la pubblichiamo anche, è una logica conseguenza. E ora ti posso dire che ci piace proprio tanto!
Parli di maggiore libertà, stai quindi dicendo che la label faceva alcune pressioni?
La Black Bards non faceva vere pressioni, ma di sicuro dopo il “break” abbiamo visto le cose in modo differente e siamo stati liberi di fare quel che volevamo. Abbiamo dovuto fare di più per conto nostro e credo che questo sia un motivo per cui gli Heathen Foray siano cresciuti un po’di più, ma potrebbe anche solo una fantasia.
Ho notato in questo Inner Force una certa evoluzione del vostro sound, che in parte si distacca da quanto fatto in passato. Siete d’accordo?
Beh, sì. Dobbiamo evolvere. Dobbiamo andare avanti passo dopo passo. Non c’è un punto fermo. Sarebbe troppo facile registrare le stesse canzoni con solo altre melodie, se capisci cosa voglio dire. Ci auguriamo che alle persone là fuori piaccia anche quello che stiamo facendo ed è fantastico se otterremo buone reazioni per le nuove canzoni.
Quali sono i punti di forza di Inner Force? Quali le canzoni che meglio rappresentano il disco, e perché?
I punti di forza, mmm… ogni canzone ha un feeling speciale. Il suo messaggio speciale. Ci sono così tante cose che non puoi riconoscere dopo un primo ascolto. La prima canzone, la titletrack
La prima canzone, la titletrack rappresenta questo album con la sua potenza. Ci sono parti delicate ed easy, e parti forti e potenti. È un inno per i nostri fans. Per loro di fronte al palco, per chi suda, urla e fa headbanging con noi. Loro sono la nostra INNER FORCE.
Il guitar working è più ricercato e vario che mai, i complimenti a Bernd e Ale sono d’obbligo!

Il titolo Inner Force e il primo verso della titletrack parla di voi e degli sforzi che fate per continuare l’attività di band?
Sì. C’è molto lavoro da fare. Non solo creare musica. Devi promuoverti, organizzare concerti e così via. Devi fare centinaia di telefonate, scrivere tonnellate di email e parlare con molte persone. A volte mi piace questo tipo di lavoro, a volte lo odio proprio. Senza questo lavoro da fare avremmo pubblicato più cd.
I testi dei primi due brani e degli ultimi due del cd sono in inglese, mentre le restanti cinque sono in tedesco. Anche nei primi due dischi avete alternato le due lingue, per quale motivo questa scelta di utilizzare due lingue?
Qualche volta non mi vengono le parole in inglese per la nostra musica. Il tedesco è la mia lingua madre e mi piace parlarlo e cantarlo, è “più mio”.
Nei testi non vi ponete limiti, avendo parlato nelle canzoni di voi stessi, della mitologia nordica e dell’assedio di Vienna. Questo, secondo me, è pregio!
Sì, anche per me. Siamo una band pagana, e io sono pagano. Penso che uno degli aspetti maggiori di ciò sia la libertà. Non voglio avere limiti per i testi. Non voglio scrivere e cantare di sangue, spade, onore e battaglie per tutto il tempo (ma questo non significa che non mi piaccia farlo ogni tanto).
Dal demo Forest avete preso tre canzoni per il debutto The Passage, mentre Wizard’s Life ha dovuto aspettare il terzo disco, c’è un motive particolare?
Sì. In un primo momenti avevamo pensato che Wizard’s Life non fosse abbastanza buona. Ma si adatta perfettamente a Inner Force. Abbiamo fatto alcuni cambiamenti nella canzone e discusso se volevamo dare al mago la possibilità di essere pubblicato. Abbiamo deciso che ora è il momento giusto per lui.
Ci sono cover che vi piacerebbe incidere?
Abbiamo fatto delle cover, ma solo per divertimento. Non abbiamo in programma di fare cover in futuro, non con gli Heathen Foray. Forse saprai che Bernd fa alcune cover nel suo progetto solista “Ferus Symphonia” Puoi trovare alcuni video su youtube, forse lì puoi trovare anche me. 😉
Cosa mi dici della scena austriaca, mi puoi dire qualcosa a riguardo?
Abbiamo dei gruppi molto buoni. Penso che il black metal vada per la maggiore, ma anche il folk metal è vivo. Ci sono gli Interregnum dalla Styria, Dark Sin da Vienna e (li devo menzionare…) Alphayn, anche loro da Vienna. Alphayn è il mio secondo progetto e stiamo realmente facendo della buona musica, secondo me.
Quali sono, secondo voi, gli ascolti obbligatori per questo genere musicale?
Ti dirò alcune band che mi hanno influenzato… al primo posto c’è, ovviamente, Bathory! Mi piacciono molto i vecchi gruppi tedeschi, come Adorned Brood, Menhir, Black Messiah e anche Wolfchant.
Quali saranno i prossimi passi degli Heathen Foray?
Suonare, bere e forse un video, ma ancora nulla è deciso.

It’s been exactly three years since your last release: what happened in this time into the family Heathen Foray?
Some beers, some partys, some gigs and of course we worked on Inner Force! We also had some line-up changes. Alex, brother of Max is doing the second guitar now and the new power behind the drums is Markus Kügerl. They are fitting very good to the rest of us.
The first two albums were published by Black Bards, while Inner Force is self-produced. Why this choice? The reason is that the German label shows no signs of life for over a year?
We decided to publish by our self because we wanted to have more freedom. We are making the music we are playing so we are producing it also. I think that this is a consequent way. And we like to go that way right now really much!
You speak about “more freedom”, are you saying that the label was pressuring (as use swords in promotional pics)?
The label was not really pressuring us. It’s just the fact that after the “break” we saw the whole band-thing in a new light and we were free to go new ways. We had to do more on our own and I think that this is a reason why Heathen Foray was growing a little more, but It may be just imagination.
I noticed this in Inner Force a certain evolution of your sound, which in part is detached from what was done in the past. Do you agree?
Well, yes. We have to evolve. We have to go step by step further. There is no point in standing still. It would be too easy recording the same songs with just other melodies, if you know what I mean. We hope that the folks out there also like what we are doing and it is great if we get good reactions on new songs.
What are the strong points of Inner Force? What are the songs that best represent the disc, and why?
The strong points… hm.. Every song has is special feeling. His special message. There are so much things you don’t recognize after the first time listening. The first track, the titletrack stands for this album. With his, power, his drive. There are this smooth, easy parts and the strong, mighty ones. It is a hymn for our fans. For them standing in front of the stages out there. For them sweating, screaming and headbanging with us. They are our INNER FORCE.
The guitar is working more sophisticated and there are more variety than ever, congratulations to Bernd and Ale!

The title Inner Force and the first verse of the title track talks about you and the efforts you make to continue the activities of the band?
Yes. There is numerous work to do. Not just making music. You have to promote yourself, organize gigs and so on. You have to do thousands of calls, write tons of mails and speak to many people. Sometimes I like that kind of work. And sometimes I really hate it. Without this work we would have some more cd’s out.
The texts of the first two and the last two tracks of the CD are in English, while the remaining five are in German. Also in the first two discs have alternated the two languages, why this choice of using two languages?
Sometimes I have no words in english for our music. German is my mother tongue. I like to speak it and I like to sing it. It is more me.
In the texts do not set limits, having spoken in the songs of yourself, of Nordic mythology and the siege of Vienna. This, to me, is fine!
Hm! Yes for me to. We are a heathen band, and I am heathen. I think one of the main aspects of this fact is freedom. I do not want to give the lyrical expressions limits. I do not want to write/sing about blood, swords, honour and battles all the time. (Dos not mean that I don’t like to do do it sometimes^^)
From the Forest demo you reused three songs for the debut The Passage, while the Wizard’s Life had to wait for the third disc, is there a particular reason?
Yes. First we thought that Wizard’s Life was not good enough. But it fits perfectly to Inner Force. We did some changes in the song and talked about it if we should give the wizard a chance to get proper published. And we decided that now is the right time for him.
There are covers that you would like to register?
We did already some covers. But just for fun. There are no plans to do covers in the future not with Heathen Foray. You may know that Bernd is doing some covers with his solo project “Ferus symphonia”. You can find some Videos on youtube. Maybe you can find me there to;-)
What about Austrain scene? You can tell me something?
We have very good bands here. I think that Black Metal is a little bit bigger. But also Folk Metal is alive. There are Interregnum from Styria, Dark Sin from Vienna and (have to mention it….) Alphayn also from Vienna. Alphayn is my second project and we are doing real nice music in my opinion.
What are, in your opinion, the main albums for this kind of music?
I will tell you some bands that influenced me because I can’t talk for the scene.. On first place there is, of course Bathory! Bands I really like are the good old germans. I mean Adorned Brood, Menhir, Black Messiah and also Wolfchant.
What the next steps of the Heathen Foray?
Playing, drinking, and maybe a video. But there is nothing fixed.
