Intervista: Finsterforst

Abbiamo imparato ad amare i tedeschi Finsterforst a suon di “forest black metal”: quattro album di intenso metal oscuro che col tempo si è tolto di dosso l’alone dei Moonsorrow per trovare una via personale quanto efficace. Ed ecco che il combo germanico decide di spiazzare tutti quanti con un EP dall’alto tasso alcolico, distante per musica e feeling dai vari Rastlos o Mach Dich Frei: #YØLØ è una pubblicazione irriverente, che ha permesso ai musicisti di divertirsi (e far divertire) a suon di cover e inediti semplici e diretti. Era quindi “obbligatorio” intervistare la band per saperne di più…

Come e quando è maturata l’idea di pubblicare un EP come #YØLØ?

Poiché siamo un gruppo di idioti cui piace solo divertirsi, abbiamo voluto far conoscere questo nostro lato folle che è un mix di amore per lo svago ed elementi seri, cool e spassosi. Tuttavia, non saprei dire con esattezza quando ci è venuta quest’idea.

Mi pare chiara la vostra intenzione di divertirvi e spiazzare i fan, é così?

É proprio ciò che volevamo fare: divertirci! Comunque, tralasciando gli aspetti folli ed “esilaranti”, penso che con quel disco abbiamo trasmesso anche messaggi più seri.

La copertina è molto carina e di facile comprensione, cosa vuol dire, invece, il titolo #YØLØ?

You only live once! (trad. “Si vive una volta sola”)

Le canzoni inedite sono molto distanti da quanto solitamente proponete, sia per composizione che per sonorità. Inoltre sono piuttosto brevi per i vostri standard. Le avete concepite in questa maniera di proposito oppure sono canzoni/idee che avete messo da parte nel corso degli anni in attesa di una pubblicazione come #YØLØ?

Visto che con questo EP volevamo proporre qualcosa di diverso, era piuttosto prevedibile che anche i pezzi sarebbero stati più brevi. Dopo tutto, in quale altro modo si può entrare nelle classifiche mondiali dei grandi album? Dico bene? Per il disco non è stato usato materiale raccolto negli ultimi anni. Non ci sono “scarti” avanzati dagli album full-length. Tutto è stato ideato appositamente per questa pubblicazione eccezionale che è #YØLØ.

In un paio di tracce mi pare di riconoscere l’influenza degli Alestorm, soprattutto per le melodie della tastiera, confermate? Vi piace la band scozzese del pazzo Bowes?

Non so dire per certo se qualcuno di noi li stia ascoltando più di tanto. Penso comunque che stiano facendo un ottimo lavoro. Grande metal con un certo tasso alcolico!

Capitolo cover: più strambe non potevate trovarne? Perché la scelta è ricaduta su brani tanto distanti dal vostro genere musicale?

Per noi è stato molto difficile decidere le cover da inserire nell’album. Avevamo in mente circa 30 pezzi su cui lavorare. Il motivo di una scelta così esotica e varia dal punto di vista musicale? Beh, semplicemente è molto più interessante includere anche qualcosa di diverso dalla solita roba. Non è forse così? E, poiché non ascoltiamo tutti solo un genere musicale, volevamo proporre qualcosa di nuovo e presentarlo al pubblico. Penso che resteresti piuttosto sorpreso se sapessi che musica ascoltiamo nelle nostre vite private, ahah!

L’idea di coverizzare Michael Jackson e Miley Cyrus mi sembra tanto provocatoria quanto intelligente: su internet si è discusso non poco di queste canzoni e il nome del gruppo è circolato veramente molto. C’è di fondo una precisa idea nella selezione delle cover, oppure sono brani che veramente vi hanno colpito?

Una cosa è certa: volevamo fare una cover di Michael Jackson perché si tratta di una delle figure più grandi e importanti nella storia della musica. Inoltre sono un suo grande fan. La scelta di Beat It è stata pressoché immediata visto che il pezzo è già di suo un mostro del rock! Su Miley Cyrus invece non ho molto da dire. Volevamo registrare una canzone pop moderna e abbiamo pensato che Wrecking Ball si prestasse bene per un’interpretazione interessante.

Cosa rispondete a chi afferma che i Finsterforst dovrebbero coverizzare Falkenbach e Bathory invece di un gruppo hip-hop tedesco (è il caso dei K.I.Z.)?

Mi ripeterei gentilmente per l’ennesima volta spiegando che con questo mini album ci stiamo divertendo da matti. Volevamo qualcosa di esotico, di diverso e di inusuale, non il solito album dei Finsterforst dal materiale complesso.

Dopo la parentesi #YØLØ, tornerete al black forest metal? Se sì, state lavorando al nuovo full-length? Si può avere qualche anticipazione a riguardo?

Vedremo cosa accadrà con il nostro quinto album full-length. Non vorrei mai seguire schemi troppo rigidi, ma l’idea è quella di tornare sulla strada principale, sì. Ci sono già alcune idee in ballo e presto inizierò a lavorare sul prossimo album. Purtroppo non posso dire nulla riguardo ai dettagli e quant’altro. Dovrete essere pazienti e nel frattempo procurarvi un paio di birre.

Dopo aver visto un videoclip come Auf Die Zwölf mi risulta difficile immaginarvi alle prese con il forest black metal. Come fate a tornare “seri” dopo una sbornia di chaos e divertimento come #YØLØ?

Sul palco abbiamo sempre dimostrato di essere, di fatto, ragazzi un po’ strani che di certo non vanno molto a fondo nelle cose, né le prendono troppo sul serio. Non siamo parte del cosiddetto credo “pagano”. Mi dispiace se con le mie parole turbo qualcuno, ma ormai si tratta di una moda, almeno per la maggior parte delle persone. E va benissimo, ovviamente! Voglio semplicemente dirvi che non siamo tipi troppo seriosi, prendiamo tutto così come viene. Dal punto di vista musicale sarà per noi facile tornare a qualcosa di più “serio”, non preoccupatevi!

Potete parlarci della vostra esperienza italiana al Fosch Fest 2015? Cosa ne pensate del pubblico italiano e dell’organizzazione? Ricordate qualche momento particolare o divertente?

É stato un posto magnifico per intrattenersi ed esibirsi! Tutti erano più che entusiasti e motivati ad andare fuori di testa, hanno anche fatto una grande festa subito dopo il concerto. Non chiedeteci di ricordi particolari. Spesso non è facile ricordare le cose… ma penso che alcuni di noi si siano semplicemente addormentati seduti o in piedi…? Non ne ho idea, ahah!

How and when did you decide to release an EP like #YØLØ?

Since we are a bunch of morons which simply enjoy great fun times, we wanted to present this particular crazy side of ourselves – having fun with a mixture of serious, cool and funny elements. I don’t know when exactly the idea came up, though.

I guess you want to have fun and to astound your fans, don’t you?

That is indeed what we wanted to have: fun! But beside all the crazy and “hilarious” factors, I think we delivered also quite some serious parts with that record.

The cover is very nice and easy to understand. By the way, what does the title #YØLØ mean?

“You only live once”!

The unreleased songs are very different from the music you usually make, with regard to both composition and sound. Furthermore, they are quite short for your standards. Have you conceived them this way on purpose or are these songs/ideas the result of a previous work waiting for a release like #YØLØ?

Since we wanted to do something different with this EP, it was quite certain that also the length of the tracks will be quite something shorter. After all, how else to enter the global big album charts, right??? The material wasn’t anything gathered throughout the last years. None of it is any “left garbage” that didn’t make it on a full-length album. It was freshly written for this exceptional release of #YØLØ.

In a couple of tracks, I can recognize Alestorm’s influences, especially with regard to keyboard melodies. Do you agree? Do you like the Scottish band and its crazy leader Bowes?

I’m not sure if any of us is really listening to them much. I think they’re doing a brilliant job with their stuff. Great metal combined with a certain touch of boozyness!

Let’s talk about covers: you could not make a weirder choice! Why did you decide to cover songs that are so distant from your music genre?

It was very difficult for us to decide which songs it actually will be then. I guess we had like thirty wishes to cover this and that and whatnot. The reason for the exotic and flexible range of music genres?… Well, it is simply much more interesting to also include something else besides always the same stuff, isn’t it? And since we all are not only into one particular music, we wanted to add something additional and present it to the people. I think you’d be pretty surprised, if you’d know what kind of musics we all are listening to in our private lives, haha!

In my opinion, covering Michael Jackson and Miley Cyrus is challenging and smart at the same time: people wrote a lot online about these songs and the band’s name spread quickly. How did you select the songs to cover? Were there any specific criteria or did you choose only those songs that really hit you right away?

One thing was for sure: we wanted to do a Michael Jackson song, because he was one of the biggest and most important figures in music history. Further on, I am a huge fan of him. Chosing Beat It was done pretty quick since that song already is quite a rock monster! I can’t tell you much about Miley Cyrus, though. We wanted to record one modern pop song and simply thought we’d be able to create with Wrecking Ball an interesting interpretation.

What would you answer to those who say that Finsterforst should cover Falkenbach and Bathory instead of a German hip-hop group?

I would kindly repeat myself for the hundredth time and explain that we are having a fun blast with this mini album. We wanted to do something exotic, something different, something unusual – not a typical Finsterforst album with complex material.

Will you return to black forest metal after the #YØLØ experience? If so, are you working on the new full-length? Could you give us a preview of your work?

We will see what will follow with our fifth full length album. I wouldn’t ever wanna follow totally strict lines, but the idea is to get back on a very huge path, yes. Some ideas already are present and I will soon start working on the next album. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything about details and whatnot. You must be patient and meanwhile grab a few beers.

After a videoclip like Auf Die Zwölf it is quite difficult to imagine you struggling with forest black metal. How can you get back “serious” after an overdose of chaos and fun like #YØLØ?

We always showed on stage that we actually ARE some weird fun guys who certainly don’t take stuff too deep or serious. We are not part of this so called “pagan” believe. Sorry if I upset anyone with this now, but this whole thing is a trend – at least for most of the people. And that is totally fine, of course! Simply wanna tell you that we anyway are not serious blokes, but we enjoy our times as it comes. Music-wise, it will be easy to get back on something more “serious”, don’t you worry!

Can you talk about your Fosch Fest 2015 experience in Italy? What about the Italian audience and the organization? Do you remember any special or funny moments from that time?

It was an amazing place to be and to perform! All the people were more than enthusiastic and motivated to go crazy and also had a great party afterwards. Don’t ask us about particular memories. It often isn’t easy to remember anything…. but I think some of us simply fell asleep sitting or standing….? Have no idea, haha!
