Intervista: Infinitas

Quella degli svizzeri Infinitas è una proposta insolita: heavy thrash ed elementi folk in un unico album sono merce rara anche perché l’accoppiamento è sicuramente rischioso oltre che davvero insolito. Civitas Interitus, il loro ultimo album, è la risposta a ogni dubbio. Curiosi di saperne di più, di come è nato questo connubio e cosa pensa la band? Ha risposto alle domande la cantante Andrea Böll, buona lettura!

Ho da poco recensito il vostro Civitas Interitus, ma prima di passare al disco vorrei che vi presentaste ai lettori di Mister Folk.

Siamo gli Infinitas e veniamo dal bellissimo paese di Muotathal, in Svizzera. La nostra line-up attuale ha Andrea alla voce, Selv alle chitarre e Piri dietro alla batteria. Però al momento siamo in cerca di persone divertenti capaci di suonare bene che il violino e il basso.

Il vostro primo lavoro è l’EP Self-Destruction del 2015. Come e quanto sono cambiati gli Infinitas negli ultimi due anni?

Da un punto di vista musicale non siamo cambiati molto. Le nostre canzoni hanno più struttura, ma in pratica lavoriamo ancora a ognuna individualmente. Ci sono stati dei cambi di strumento in formazione, che sono il motivo per cui stiamo cercando qualcuno per violino e basso. Tempo fa avevamo una ragazza ai flauti, ma ormai siamo passati oltre quel periodo, è l’ora che gli Infinitas trovino una line-up stabile per creare le fondamenta su cui basare un suono creativo e magnifico.

Civitas Interitus è un concept album interessante sia per la musica che per i testi. Vorrei partire da quest’ultimi e ascoltare il racconto della storia narrata nelle canzoni…

C’è effettivamente una storia che attraversa l’intero album, dall’Intro all’Outro. Racconta di diversi demoni e di come distruggono la città di Lunatris. Ogni demone distrugge una parte diversa della città, per assicurarsi che non ci sia via di scampo e che alla fine venga completamente demolita. Il nostro protagonista prova terrore, pericolo e resistenza. Sente che c’è qualcosa di strano e cerca un luogo sicuro, ma non riesce a trovarlo. Alla fine scappa con una barca e attraversa il mare.

Reputo il vostro full-length un disco ben riuscito, ma a colpirmi particolarmente sono stati i ritornelli. Credo che dietro ci sia un gran lavoro e il risultato è sempre di altissima qualità. Era un vostro obiettivo quello di creare dei ritornelli accattivanti e di facile assimilazione?

È una buona domanda. Sappiamo apprezzare un ritornello che attira, ma preferiremmo avere una canzone che sia intrinsecamente consistente. Lavoriamo con molta cura su ogni canzone e lasciamo che i membri del gruppo ci inseriscano le loro idee, anche se ciò significa che ogni tanto bisogna aggiustare il songwriting di Selv. Non ci fermiamo finché ogni membro non è soddisfatto del risultato, e anche finché non gli piace suonarlo. Vogliamo che gli altri sentano la nostra passione.

In Skylla sembra di ascoltare degli echi maideniani: la band di Steve Harris è tra le vostre influenze?

Ci piacciono i Maiden e il nostro precedente bassista, Pauli, è forse il più grande fan degli Iron Maiden sulla faccia del pianeta. Ci sono parecchie band che hanno influenzato le nostre canzoni, come Skylla: Amorphis, Children Of Bodom, Opeth, Wintersun, Ensiferum ecc. Certe influenze sono abbastanza riconoscibili, ogni tanto.

Avete dato molta importanza al booklet, che infatti è bello e davvero curato nei minimi dettagli. In particolare mi ha colpito la mappa, ritengo sia molto importante per comprendere meglio i testi e avere visivamente sotto controllo i luoghi dove avviene la storia.

Esatto, ci abbiamo messo un sacco di passione e lavoro sia nel booklet che nel design. Per noi è importante che l’ascoltatore non senta solo poche canzoni, ma che capisca l’intera storia dietro all’album. Per questo abbiamo pensato che una mappa avrebbe potuto essere d’aiuto per visualizzare il tutto. Il booklet offre parecchio a chi ha un occhio per i dettagli – e anche il lavoro artistico è qualcosa a cui vale la pena dare un’occhiata. Molti danno solo un’occhiata alla mappa e capiscono subito cosa stia succedendo.

La prima volta che vi ho ascoltato il pensiero è stato “wow, thrash e folk insieme, questa è una novità!”. Come vi è venuta l’idea di mischiare due generi molto differenti tra loro e c’erano all’interno della band qualcuno che non era d’accordo? Che voi sappiate, ci sono altre band che uniscono questi due generi?

All’inizio volevamo solo suonare thrash con voce femminile e violini. Per fortuna abbiamo creato qualcosa di ancora più unico. Ci sono ancora elementi thrash, e anche folk, ma abbiamo inserito anche cose melodic e death. Alla fine della fiera, non importa che genere suoniamo. Vogliamo solo divertirci e dare vita alle nostre idee. Selv si occupa di scriverle. È lui la persona dietro alle idee e alla visione del gruppo, e le tira fuori con la chitarra. Di sicuro ci sono band con un suono simile al nostro a cui ci comparano, come gli Skyclad. Non ne avevamo mai nemmeno sentito parlare finché qualcuno non ha detto che suonavamo simili a loro. Hanno un suono unico, che mischia parecchi generi, proprio come noi. Però non ci piacciono i confronti, perché non sono importanti. La cosa più importante è se la musica ti piace o no. Ad esempio se Selv tira fuori una nuova idea e piace a tutti gli altri, la suoniamo senza guardare il genere. Se non ci piace, non la suoniamo – è semplice.

Avete mai temuto di essere poco thrash per i thrashers e poco folk per chi ama il folk?

Ahah, e perché dovremmo? Sul serio, siamo chi siamo e c’è sempre qualcuno a cui non piacerai e lo sappiamo. Non lasciamo che sia una cosa che ci influenza. A volte scriviamo canzoni pesanti, a volte cose più rilassate. Non costringiamo nessuno a ascoltarci. Se non ti piace, va bene così. Ovviamente ci fa piacere se apprezzi la nostra musica. Ci sarà sempre qualcuno che dice che non siamo abbastanza thrash o che chiede più elementi folk a gran voce. Questo tipo di feedback riconosce l’esistenza del nostro lavoro, e noi andiamo avanti come vogliamo visto che ci sono altrettante persone che dicono che siamo il mix perfetto di merda pesante e melodica (heavy and melodic shit).

Il disco è un autoprodotto: una scelta precisa da parte vostra o mancanza di valide alternative?

L’abbiamo scelto noi. Due di noi sono musicisti a tempo pieno, che ci permette di svolgere i nostri compiti durante il giorno. È interessante osservare cosa succede durante la produzione, il rilascio e il marketing di un album. Per noi è importante non solo vedere, ma anche comprendere quel processo. Vogliamo continuare così finché possiamo e accumulare esperienza. Un giorno magari lasceremo qualcosa ad altre persone, ma alla condizione che il risultato finale sia sempre approvato da noi. Per ora facciamo tutto noi.

Dopo la release di Civitas Interitus su cosa state lavorando? Ci sono nuove canzoni in cantiere?

C’è un lyric video, e stiamo filmando un video. Ci sono anche dei progetti segreti, roba top secret di cui non possiamo ancora parlare. Ti dico solo questo: la fabbrica delle idee sta facendo gli straordinari. C’è un sacco di movimento nel nostro studio.

I’ve just reviewed Civitas Interitus, but before moving on to the album I’d like to ask you to introduce yourselves to Mister Folk’s readers.

We are Infinitas and are from the beautiful town of Muotathal, Switzerland. Our current line up consists of Andrea on vocals, Selv on guitar and Piri on drums. However, we are looking for skilled, fun people to play violin and bass.

Your first work is the Self-Desctruction EP, from 2015. How and how much has Infinitas changed in the past few years?

We haven’t really changed much from a musical point of view. Our songs might be a bit more structured, but basically we treat each song individually. We’ve had a few instrumental changes, hence why we’re undergoing another change and that’s why we are looking for somebody at violin and bass. Some time ago we had a girl playing the flute, although we have moved on and it’s time for Infinitas to find a stable line up to create a foundation and provide creative and awesome sound based upon.

Civitas Interitus is an interesting album to listen to, both regarding music and lyrics. I’d like to start from here, and listen to the story that is being told throughout the tracks…

There is indeed a story leading through the whole album, from Intro to Outro. It’s about several demons and how they destroy the city of Lunatris. Each demon ravages a different part of the city to make sure the whole city stands no chance and eventually will be completely demolished. Our protagonist experiences danger, fear and resistance. He feels something isn’t right and is in search of a safe place, but can’t find one. Eventually he escapes by boat and travels across the sea.

I believe your full-length is a well-realized album, but I was particularly impressed by the choruses. There’s a lot of work behind them, I believe, with very high quality results. Was writing catchy choruses able to easily hook the listener one of your goals?

That’s a good question. We appreciate a catchy chorus, however we’d rather have a song that is inherently consistent. We work meticulously on every song and let band member bring in their thoughts, even though it means that Selv’s song writings need to be changed again at times. That’s the way our songs are being made. We won’t stop until every single member is happy with the result and also loves to play it. We want others to be able to feel our passion.

There’s some Iron Maiden-ish influence in Skylla; is Steve Harris’ band one of your main influences?

We like Iron Maiden and our former bass player, Pauli, is probably the world’s greatest Iron Maiden fan. There’s quite a few bands which have influenced our songs, such as Skylla: Amorphis, Children Of Bodom, Opeth, Wintersun, Ensiferum etc. Every now and then certain influences are recognizable .

You put a lot of care into the booklet, which is very refined even down to the smallest details. I’m particularly impressed by the map, which I felt was very important to understand the lyrics and visualize all the locations where the story is set in.

That’s right, we have put a big effort and lots of passion into the booklet and design. It’s important to us that the listener doesn’t just get to hear a few songs, but rather understand the whole story behind the songs. That’s why we thought a map would help visually through the songs and album. The booklet offers so much to all who have an eye for details – also the artwork is worth checking out J All others just look at the map and instantly know what’s going on.

The first time I listened to your works I thought “wow, thrash and folk? That’s definitely new!” How did you come up with this idea of mixing two very different genres, and was anybody in the band who disagreed? Do you know of any other band playing this peculiar mix?

Initially we wanted to play thrash metal with female vocals and violins. Fortunately we created something even more unique. There’s still some thrash elements around and also folk, but we include even melodic and death metal elements. At the end of the day, it’s not important what kind of music we play. We just want to have fun and fulfil our own ideas. Selv writes our songs. He’s the man with the ideas and visions and rings them out with his guitar. Surely there are bands with similar music to whom we get compared to, like Skyclad. We had never heard of them before till somebody compared us to them. They produce an unique sound with different genres mixed together, a bit just like us. However we don’t really like comparisons, because they are not important. The most important thing is whether you like certain music or not. For example when Selv brings up a new idea of a song and we all dig, we play it no matter what genre. If we don’t like it, we don’t play it – simply put.

Have you ever been afraid of not being thrash enough for thrashers and not folk enough for folk lovers?

Haha why should we? Seriously, we are who we are and there’s always people who don’t like you and we know that. We don’t let that fact influence us. Sometimes we create heavy songs, sometimes we come up with soft stuff. We don’t force anyone to like our music. If you don’t dig it, fair enough. Of course we appreciate if you like our music. Obviously there’s always people who claim we were not thrash enough or who ask for more folk elements. Feedback like these acknowledge our work and we continue our way since there are equally as many people who say we play the perfect mix of heavy and melodic shit.

The album is self-published: was this by choice or by necessity?

It was our choice. Two of us are full-time musicians, which allows us to run our daily errands during the day. It’s a very interesting process to see what it all takes to produce, release and market an album. It’s important to us to not only see but also to understand that very process. We want to keep this up for as long as we can and gain experience. One day we might be willing to outsource certain parts but only as long as we have a say in the final product. As of now we still do all the work.

After having released Civitas Interitus, what are you working on now? Any new tracks?

A lyric video and we are also working on a music clip. On the other side we are working on secret projects, highly classified stuff we can’t tell anything about just yet. Just this: the creativity factory is working overtime. There’s lots of action going on in our studio.
