Intervista: Sur Austru

Il nuovo disco Obârşie conferma la bravura dei romeni Sur Austru: ma c’era bisogno di questo lavoro per saperlo? Il passato di Tibor Kati e soci parla da solo, così come Meteahna Timpurilor full-length di debutto risalente a due anni fa. L’uscita del nuovo cd è l’occasione per parlare con i musicisti e sapere come vanno le cose nella zona di Timisoara.

Benvenuti su Mister Folk! Per prima cosa complimenti per il nuovo Obârşie, un disco valido dal primo all’ultimo secondo e che in alcuni passaggi mi fa venire la pelle d’oca. In quale maniera avete lavorato al vostro secondo album? Il Covid-19 ha in qualche modo influenzato lo svolgimento delle prove o delle registrazioni?

Ciao! Siamo davvero felici che il nostro nuovo album ti piaccia, e che la nostra musica abbia toccato la tua anima! 🙂 Abbiamo composto questo album lo scorso anno, approfittando in qualche modo di questa pandemia. Tutti i nostri concerti, più le partecipazioni ai festival, erano stati cancellati, quindi abbiamo deciso di concentrarci sulla creazione di nuova musica. Abbiamo lavorato sui brani da casa, per la composizione e tutte le varie prove; quando il lockdown è terminato, siamo entrati in studio e abbiamo registrato il tutto.

La parola Obârşie in romeno ha un significato profondo: mi piacerebbe che ce ne parlaste per permetterci di capire appieno cosa intendete voi per Obârşie.

Obârşie è un concept album (pensato per essere il primo di una trilogia): i brani sono legati insieme da un unico filo conduttore, e il miglior modo per apprezzarlo fino in fondo, a livello sonoro e testuale, è ascoltarlo tutto d’un fiato! La parola Obârşie significa “origine”, che si tratti di una sorgente di montagna o di una cerimonia di iniziazione.

Obârşie è la trasposizione musicale del vostro modo di vedere il mito dei Solomonari: volete parlare di questi personaggi poco conosciuti in Italia, ma che destano curiosità?

Con Obârşie manteniamo la nostra visione e interpretazione del mito dei Solomonari, le entità magiche che controllano la pioggia, il tuono e il vento, che possono scatenare tempeste e guarire le anime perdute. I Solomonari venivano ingaggiati dal popolo: erano esperti di arti magiche, in grado di comprendere il linguaggio degli animali e di cavalcare draghi. La tradizione vuole che siano poi divenuti gli apprendisti del Diavolo, sia nel caso in cui fosse stato egli stesso ad istruirli, sia che fossero semplicemente i suoi servitori.

Musica e folklore: in quale maniera vi siete avvicinati al metal estremo e ai racconti folkloristici? Nel mio immaginario c’è qualcuno della famiglia che quando eravate piccoli vi racconta storie e leggende locali e la cosa vi ha segnato fino al punto da portare in musica queste leggende. Come sono andate le cose?

La nostra musica è fortemente influenzata dal folklore romeno: a livello testuale, contiene la nostra personale interpretazione di miti, leggende e tradizioni locali; a livello musicale, per via dell’utilizzo di strumenti sacri tradizionali. Tutto ciò fa parte della nostra cultura, qui in Transilvania. Dato che amiamo il metal e siamo cresciuti ascoltandolo, ci è venuto naturale unire questi due elementi e aggiungere quanti più “aromi” possibili, per creare l’atmosfera caratteristica dei Sur Austru. Non posso dire che ci siano state raccontate molte storie riguardo il nostro folklore locale, quando eravamo bambini…credo che preferissimo “Tom & Jerry”. Ma più diventavamo grandi, più a sua volta cresceva il nostro interesse nei confronti di antichi miti e leggende. Tutto ciò ci ha aiutati a comprendere meglio le nostre origini, e a maturare a livello individuale.

Ho notato che nel nuovo lavoro è presente in maniera massiccia la voce pulita: una scelta prettamente musicale? Tra l’altro, così facendo, quando i ritmi si fanno serrati e il cantato diventa growl c’è una forte rottura e le parti estreme delle vostre canzoni risaltano maggiormente.

Abbiamo sempre guardato con grande attenzione alle parti cantate, ma in Obârşie abbiamo voluto spingerci oltre i limiti, e credo che il risultato finale sia soddisfacente. Il growl è profondo, mentre il cantato pulito e i cori sono… inquietanti. In questo caso, i suoni provenienti dai vari strumenti e le voci si combinano, idealmente si mescolano insieme, e conducono al risultato finale.

Con i Negură Bunget avete fatto uscire i dischi con il bellissimo formato 28×28 con diversi dischi e una marea di pagine con foto, informazioni e testi. Devo ammettere che per i dischi di Sur Austru mi aspettavo qualcosa di particolare, almeno un box in legno e cose così. Come mai la decisione di pubblicare cd e vinili in maniera canonica? Forse per focalizzare maggiormente l’attenzione degli ascoltatori sulla musica? Oppure è un semplice discorso economico?

Beh, sai bene che i Negură Bunget erano un nome piuttosto famoso nella scena metal, con numerosi album pubblicati in 25 anni di attività. Dopo molti anni, e molti album, hanno avuto la possibilità di pubblicare simili edizioni deluxe delle loro release. Crediamo che per una band agli esordi, come i Sur Austru, le edizioni attuali siano più che sufficienti: abbiamo entrambi i nostri album in formato vinile (sia nero, sia a colori) pressati a 45 RPM, per gli ascoltatori più esigenti, e anche i CD hanno un aspetto molto “affascinante”.

A proposito della grafica dei dischi, volevo dire che il “taglio” centrale delle copertine è davvero bello e a memoria non ricordo di aver visto qualcosa di simile? C’è qualche storia dietro a questa idea, tipo che la parte mancante può essere vista come una porta d’ingresso al mondo Sur Austru?

Abbiamo dato un’attenzione particolare all’artwork dell’album, e alla fine siamo giunti all’idea che ha portato alla creazione di questa edizione deluxe in digipack, con un DIE-CUT nella parte frontale della copertina e un UV spot. In realtà, ci sei andato molto vicino… è una sorta di “portale”, che permette di guardare dall’esterno (cioè il mondo reale) verso l’interno (ovvero, il mondo dei Sur Austru, pieno di magia e mistero).

Ho visto i video del concerto con l’orchestra filarmonica Arad: se non fosse stato per il maltempo sarebbe stata una bellissima serata! Siete soddisfatti dell’esperienza e ci saranno nuove occasioni in futuro? Pensavo che il dvd del concerto potrebbe essere un buon bonus per una prossima uscita.

Il nostro progetto più ambizioso prevedeva di suonare tutto il nostro album di debutto in presenza di un’orchestra e di un coro completi (per un totale di più di 80 musicisti coinvolti). Ci siamo imposti degli standard molto elevati, abbiamo concepito il progetto “Su Austru Simfonic” e lo abbiamo realizzato in una tempestosa notte d’estate. È stata un’esperienza trascendentale, sia per noi, sia per il pubblico! La pioggia era lo scenario perfetto per una performance indimenticabile.

Tempo fa avete scritto su Facebook che ci sarebbe stato il terzo e ultimo disco dei Negură Bunget riguardante la Trilogia Transilvana. Come stanno procedendo i lavori e si ha idea di quando lo potremo ascoltare?

Tutto ciò che rappresenta il nome e l’eredità dei Negură Bunget appartiene alla moglie di Negru, compresa la pagina Facebook e i relativi annunci. Sappiamo che la terza parte della Trilogia è pronta, ed è la label che deciderà la data di uscita.

Nella recensione ho scritto che la vostra musica fa venire voglia di conoscere la Romania e la vostra zona in particolare. Dovete sapere che per i miei 40 anni stavo programmando un viaggio in Romania per visitare Timisoara e i luoghi bellissimi visti in foto su Tau e Zi (ho gli artbook). Il Covid-19 ha purtroppo bloccato tutto, ma mi piacerebbe sapere cosa voi consigliate di visitare assolutamente in caso di viaggio dalle parti di Timisoara.

In realtà noi proveniamo da Arad, una città vicina a Timisoara. Siamo “vicini” del Banat, ma se mai viaggiassi dalle nostre parti, sarebbe bello prenderci una birra insieme, e magari anche della țuică. (chiaramente non vedo l’ora! ndMF)

Com’è la situazione in Romania a proposito del Covid-19? Come state affrontando questo momento di fermo, almeno per quel che riguarda i concerti?

Temo che la situazione stia peggiorando, la terza ondata è in arrivo anche qui, cercheremo di restare in salute, nel corpo e nello spirito. E per i live, nella seconda metà dell’anno forse sarà possibile farli di nuovo, staremo a vedere…

Welcome on Mister Folk! First of all, congratulations for your new work Obârşie, a really valiant album from the beginning to the end: some passages really gave me goosebumps. How did you work on your second full – length? Has the ongoing pandemic influenced your rehearsals or the recording process?

Hello Mr. Folk ! We’re glad that you like our new album “Obârşie” and that our music is touching your soul 🙂 We must say that we did somehow take advantage from this pandemic and did compose this album last year. All our concerts and festivals were canceled so we decided to focus on making new music. We worked, composed and practiced the songs from home and when the lock down was over, we entered the studio and recorded everything.

The Romanian word Obârşie has a really deep meaning: I would like you to talk about it, in order to allow us to better figure out your idea about this concept.

“Obarsie” is a conceptual work (planned to be the first from a trilogy), songs are bound together and the best way to enjoy it, both sonically and texturally, is listening to it in the same breath! “Obarsie” means origin, whether it is the source of water in the mountain or it can be an initiation ceremony.

Obârşie represents the musical transposition of your own personal view about the myth of Solomonar. Would you like to tell us more about these characters, who arouse a lot of curiosity, despite being almost unknown in Italy?

With Obârşie we continue with our vision and interpretation of the myth of “Solomonari”, the magical entities, who summon rain, thunder and wind, who can raise storms and heal lost souls. “The Solomonari” are recruited from the people, they are taught their magic and the speech of animals and become capable of riding the dragons. Tradition says they became the Devil’s apprentices, either being instructed by him, or becoming a servant to his commands.

Music and folklore: how did you approach to extreme metal music and folk tales? In my personal image, some members of your families told you local stories and legends when you were children, and you were so touched that you decided to put all of this into music. Did things go this way?

Our music is strongly influenced by Romanian folklore, lyrically by our interpretations of old myths, legends and local lore, and musically by using old traditional and sacred instruments. It is part of our culture here in Transylvania. As we also love metal and we grew up with it, it came natural to mix these two elements and to add as much “spices as we could to create Sur Austru’s atmosphere. I can’t say that we were told so much stories about our folklore when we were kids, I guess we always prefered Tom and Jerry … but as we matured, so did the interest in old legends and myths grew. It also helped us to undestand our origins better and to develop as individuals.

I have noticed that clean vocals are a really strong presence in your last work: is it a strictly musical choice? Among other things, in this way an evident breakdown occurs when rhythm becomes faster and vocals turn to growl. As a result, also the extreme sections of your music are enhanced.

We always were taking the vocal parts very seriously, but with “Obarsie” we ‘pushed’ our limits and I think the results are satisfying. The growling is deep and the clean voices and choruses are haunting. In this case, the combination of sounds from many instruments and the voices blends ideally together and it delivers the final result.

With Negură Bunget, you released your full-lengths in an amazing 28×28 size, including albums, photos, info and lyrics. I admit that I expected something unusual about Sur Austru’s releases, for example a packaging in the shape of a wooden box, or sort of thing. Why have you decided to release your CDs and vinyls with a “canonical” appearance? Perhaps you made this choice to lead listeners to focus more on music, or is it just a matter of lower production costs?

Well, you know that Negura Bunget was a quite big name in the metal scene, with many albums in its almost 25 years activity . After many years and albums they did manage to release such deluxe boxes and editions of their releases … We think that for a debutant band as Sur Austru, our edition are more than accomplished , we have both our albums on vinyl (black and coloured) pressed at 45 RPM for best audiophile listening and the CD’s have also a ‘charming’ presentation.

About the albums’ graphics, I would like to tell you that the idea of putting a “cut” image at the center of the cover is really interesting, in my opinion; according to my memory, I haven’t seen something similar before. Is there any particular reason behind this idea? For example, maybe this “missing part” can be considered as a sort of “gate” on Sur Austru’s world?

We gave a special attention to the artwork of the album and we came up with the idea of this deluxe digipack edition with DIE-CUT front and UV spot. Actually you are pretty close … it is a ‘gate’ where you can look from the outside (the real and actual world) into inside (Sur Austru’s own realm of magic and mistery).

I have watched the videos filmed during your concert with Arad Philharmonic Orchestra: it would certainly have been a great evening, if it were not for the bad weather! Are you satisfied with that experience? Will there be any other occasions in the future? Personally, I think that a DVD of that concert might be a good bonus for your next release.

Our most ambitious project was to play the debut album with a full orchestra and full choir (with more than 80 musicians involved). The standards we set for ourselves were very high, so “SUR Austru Simfonic” project was conceived and it did happen on a stormy summer night. It was a transcendental experience for both the public and us ! The rain was just the perfect setup for an unforgettable performance. We might consider to release it as a DVD in the future.

Some time ago you published a post on your Facebook page, saying that the third and last part of Negură Bunget’s Transylvanian Trilogy will be released. How is work progressing? Is there a possible release date already?

Everything that represents the name and the legacy of “Negura Bunget” belongs to Negru’s wife, also the Facebook page and all its announcements. We know that the last part of the Trilogy is done and it’s the label choice if and when it will be released.

In my review I wrote that your music invites listeners to discover more about Romania, especially your region, the Banat. I was planning a trip to Romania to celebrate my 40th birthday: the itinerary would have included Timisoara and all the wonderful places represented in Tau e Zi photos (yes, I have the artbooks!). Unfortunately, Covid-19 ruined all my plans, but I would like to ask you for some recommendations about special places to visit in Timisoara.

Actually we are from Arad, a city near Timisoara. We are neighbours with the region of Banat, but if you manage to travel in this part of the world, we’ll love to have a beer and maybe some ‘tuica’ together.

How is the situation in Romania, speaking of the pandemic? How are you dealing with it, especially regarding the block on live shows?

The situation it’s getting worse I think, the third wave it’s almost here also, we’ll try to stay healthy in body and spirit. As for the live shows, I think maybe in the second half of the year it will be possible, we’ll see…
