Iniziamo parlando del nuovo lavoro The Glorious Dead: il sound è molto più pesante e aggressivo rispetto ai primi due lavori, anche se è possibile intuire l’evoluzione musicale che avete e state vivendo…

L’evoluzione è e dovrebbe essere una costante in tutti gli aspetti della vita, inclusa la musica. Per noi reinventarci non è un obiettivo, quanto piuttosto una conseguenza del nostro cambiamento personale come individui.

The Glorious Dead è stato pubblicato a fine ottobre, quale il responso di fan e critica?

I fan hanno reagito positivamente e siamo contenti che l’abbiano apprezzato. Non trascorriamo molto tempo a leggere ciò che dice la critica. Si tratterà sempre di un’opinione personale. Comunque, stando a quanto abbiamo letto, sembra che alcuni lo adorino mentre per altri è da buttar via poiché non abbastanza folk. Ma è una loro opinione.

A quale pubblico vi proponete: folk o metal estremo? Non temete di essere troppo “pesanti” per i primi e troppo folk per i secondi?

Come dicevo prima, non siamo molto fissati col dover piacere. Per noi suonare è un hobby, è una cosa che ci fa stare bene. Ed è per questo motivo che creiamo ciò che ci sembra giusto al momento. Non ci reputiamo un gruppo folk metal ma più “una band melodic metal che era solita utilizzare molti strumenti musicali tradizionali e che ora ha solo una cornamusa“. Quindi, per farla breve… nessun timore da parte nostra, se poi alle persone piacciamo è fantastico. Siamo molto grati a tutti i nostri fan e nutriamo un grande rispetto per loro ma, riguardo alla scrittura dei pezzi, dobbiamo seguire il nostro freddo e oscuro orecchio metal. 🙂

La nuova via musicale intrapresa è dovuta per lo più dai cambiamenti di line-up del 2013? Trovo particolarmente interessante l’uso della chitarra, ora uno strumento molto importante per il vostro sound: in Written In Blood, ad esempio, ci sono dei riff veramente massicci che danno alla composizione un’atmosfera tetra ma anche “moderna” se mi passate il termine.

Per certi versi sì. Molti membri della band desideravano, almeno per questo disco, un cambiamento nel suono e quindi cambiare è stato naturale. Stiamo inoltre lavorando su del nuovo materiale e intendiamo trarre ispirazione sia dai vecchi che dai nuovi Vanir.

Parliamo dei testi: guerrieri, sangue e urla di battaglia sembrano essere la vostra ispirazione.

Sì, guerra e condottieri sono tematiche di cui ci piace cantare e scrivere :), ci sono così tante storie da raccontare.

Quali sono gli aspetti positivi e quelli negativi del far parte di una piccola scena (seppur di qualità) come quella danese?

Bella domanda. Un contro è che la scena danese è troppo ristretta rispetto al numero di band esistenti, il che significa che gli addetti tendono a non gradire gli eventi metal su prenotazione. I pro… immagino che sia un “quid” in più il fatto che veniamo dalla Danimarca, terra in cui hanno vissuto i Vichinghi. Ma non è qualcosa a cui abbiamo dato troppa importanza.

Avete suonato in Danimarca e nei paesi “vicini” quali Svezia, Germania e Norvegia: può essere questa la volta buona per un tour più esteso?

Sarebbe bello provare ad andare più lontano, ma è anche costoso. Se si dovessero presentare delle buone opportunità le coglieremo sicuramente.

State già lavorando a dei nuovi pezzi? Qualche anteprima?

Sì, abbiamo cominciato a lavorare su del nuovo materiale ma non abbiamo ancora nessuna demo 🙂 e il concept è ancora da definire. Quindi per ora non è possibile fare previsioni.

Ci sono delle cover che amate suonare? Ne registrerete una in futuro, magari per un EP?

Stiamo lavorando a un EP, a volte rifacciamo i Lamb of God… e sì, con una cornamusa…. 🙂 Inoltre abbiamo pensato che sarebbe divertente fare la cover di un pezzo come Zombie dei Cranberries.

Let’s start talking about your new work The Glorious Dead: the sound is much “heavier” and more aggressive than the one that characterized the band’s two previous albums, but it’s possible to perceive the musical evolution you are still going through.

Evolution is and should be a constant in all aspects of life and that includes music. We don’t have as a goal to innovate ourselves, it’s more of a consequence of our personal change as individuals.

The Glorious Dead was released at the end of October. How did fans and critics respond to it?

The fans have been positive and we are glad that they like it. We don’t really spend that much time reading what the critics say. It will always be a personal opinion. But from what we have read, it seems that some love it and some discards it for not being folky enough. But that’s their opinion.

Who is your audience? Folk or extreme metal fans? Aren’t you afraid you’re too “heavy” for the former group and too folk for the latter one?

Like the answer before, we tend not to focus too much on pleasing. Playing music is a hobby and something we enjoy. And that is why we create what seems right at the moment. We don’t see ourselves as a folk metal band, more as “a melodic metal band that used to have a lot of folk instruments but now only have a bagpipe.” So to answer the question in shot… no, we were not afraid and if people like us it’s awesome. We are very grateful for all our fans and have great respect for them, but we have to follow our cold black metal hears when it comes to writing our songs 🙂

Is your new musical direction due to the line-up changes occurred in 2013? I think the use of the guitar is really interesting, since it plays an important role in your sound: in Written in Blood, for instance, there are some really powerful riffs that make the composition gloomy but “modern” (if I may say so) at the same time.

In some point yes, a lot of the members in the band wanted a change in the sound, at least for this record so the change was natural. We are working on new material again and we look at both old and new Vanir for inspiration.

Let’s talk about the lyrics: warriors, blood and battle cries seem to be your source of inspiration.

Yes war and warlords is a theme we like to sing and write about :), there are so many tales to be told.

What are the pros and cons of being part of a small (but of quality) scene such as the Danish one?

Good question, the cons are that the Danish scene is too small for all the bands, which means the bookers tend to dislike booking metal shows. Pros… I guess it puts some flavour to our concept that we are from Denmark, being where Vikings lived. But it’s not something we have given a lot of thought.

You played in Denmark and in neighbouring countries such as Sweden, Germany and Norway: could it be the right time for a more extensive tour?

It would be great to venture further, but it is also expensive. If we get some good opportunities it is for sure that we will grab them.

Are you already working on new songs? Any previews?

Yes, we have begun working on new material, we don’t have any demos yet 🙂 and the concept is still being discussed. So for now I have to leave all speculations in a haze.

Are there cover songs that you like playing? Are you going to record one in the future, maybe for an EP?

We are working on a EP, we sometimes jam Lamb of God… and yes, with a bagpipe… 🙂 But we have also talked about a song like Cranberries Zombie would be fun to cover.
