Intervista: Eluveitie

Negli ultimi tempi degli Eluveitie se n’è parlato non poco: il brusco (e inatteso) split con tre membri della vecchia guardia (2016) ha suscitato tanto timore nei fan sopratutto per la figura di Anna Murphy, vista come rappresentante della band svizzera al pari del leader Chrigel Glanzmann. Gli elvetici, senza tanti giri di parole o polemiche si sono messi al lavoro e hanno pubblicato di recente il bel disco acustico Evocation II – Pantheon, opera prima per i nuovi arrivati, lavoro accolto con curiosità dal pubblico e con un occhio di riguardo per Fabienne Erni, la nuova vocalist. La cantante ha risposto con grande gentilezza e sorrisi alle mie domande, tra curiosità e voglia di far conoscere ai lettori la talentuosa musicista.

Per prima cosa complimenti per l’ottimo lavoro su Evocation II – Pantheon. Quali sono le tue sensazioni ora che il disco è stato pubblicato e ben accolto praticamente ovunque?

Grazie mille per l’interesse. 🙂 È fantastico! Sono felicissima di aver avuto un feedback così positivo e che alla gente piaccia l’album tanto quanto a me. Registrare il disco è stato un viaggio bellissimo, e personalmente un’esperienza indimenticabile.

Sei la nuova cantante degli Eluveitie, ma non si sa molto di te prima di entrare a far parte della band di Granzmann. Vuoi raccontarci i tuoi trascorsi musicali e come ti sei avvicinata alla musica?

Forse suona un po’ sdolcinato, ma ho semplicemente amato cantare sin da quando ero piccola. Quando ho compiuto vent’anni sono andata in Svezia per studiare musica per un anno, e ho avuto l’occasione di conoscere il folk e il metal scandinavo e me ne sono innamorata. Al momento studio musica a Zurigo per diventare un’insegnante di canto. Non ho mai fatto parte di una “mia” band, ho suonato solo in gruppi scolastici. La mia passione è sempre stata il canto accompagnato dal piano, che suono io stessa. Ho fatto molti matrimoni, era un tipico lavoro da studente e mi piaceva parecchio. E adesso mi concentro sugli Eluveitie al 150%. 😉

Come sei entrata in contatto con la band? Penso tu abbia sostenuto un provino: ci puoi svelare come si è svolta la cosa e quali canzoni hai cantato?

Jonas Wolf, il nostro nuovo chitarrista, andava alla stessa scuola in cui andavo io a Zurigo, più o meno ci conoscevamo. Mi ha raccomandato alla band e loro si sono fatti sentire. La cosa mi ha un po’ intimidito, e mi ci è voluto molto coraggio per mandargli una demo di Call Of The Mountains – che ho registrato sul cellulare nella cantina di casa mia! 😉 Poi ho incontrato la band per conoscerli. Io e Chrigel stavamo registrando qualcosa per vedere come funzionava, se c’era intesa nel lavoro e si… alla fine ero la prescelta! 😉

Suoni l’arpa e la mandola: come è nato l’amore per questi strumenti?

Ho imparato l’arpa per gli Eluveitie. È uno strumento che mi ha sempre affascinato, ma fino ad allora avevo suonato solo piano e chitarra. Mi sono innamorata dello strumento ed è sempre affascinante continuare ad approfondirlo. 🙂

Le canzoni di Evocation II – Pantheon erano tutte pronte quando sei entrata in formazione oppure hai contribuito in fase di composizione? Ci sono dei brani che per qualche motivo senti più tuoi?

Era interessante vedere come alcune canzoni e certe idee si sono create e sviluppate durante il lavoro in studio. Era la prima volta che registravo in uno studio professionale, è stato molto figo e molto intenso. Abbiamo passato parecchio tempo a lavorare alle canzoni, ma anche a cucinare e chiacchierare e a divertirci. E se dovessi scegliere una delle canzoni che sento come più “mia”, direi Artio, avevo un sacco di libertà in quel brano e adoro quella melodia, è fantastica. 🙂

Ho apprezzato veramente tanto la tua interpretazione in Artio, trovo che sia un brano molto delicato che colpisce il cuore dell’ascoltatore. A me ha ricordato la bella serie TV Outlander. Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa sul testo e come ti sei preparata per una canzone del genere?

Grazie mille! 🙂 La canzone parla di una donna celtica, che era stata deportata lontano dalla sua casa. Ripensa alla sua famiglia, al suo amore, alla sua casa e si sente sola, persa e disperata. Mi sono immaginata nei suoi panni, seduta in mezzo alla natura e con nostalgia della mia famiglia, dei miei amici e del mio amore. Mi chiedevo come stessero, e che aspetto avesse casa mia dopo tutto quel tempo. L’ho approcciata all’inizio in maniera calma, triste e introversa. Nel finale sono disperata e urlo il mio dolore.

In Evocation II – Pantheon c’è molto irish folk: ti piace come genere e pensi che nei prossimi lavori della band ci potrà essere spazio per questo stile in un contesto metal estremo?

Amo l’irish folk, o il folk in generale – è il motivo per cui gli Eluveitie mi piacciono così tanto. Un sacco di strumenti diversi fusi col metal, che altro potrei desiderare! 😉 Per me, quando ascolto gli Eluveitie, immagino uno scenario fantasy davanti a me. C’è qualcosa di mistico e fantastico, e si – ovviamente ci sarà spazio! 🙂

Quali sono le canzoni degli Eluveitie versione metal che preferisci? C’è una canzone che normalmente è fuori repertorio ma che ti piacerebbe proporre live?

Questa è difficile! 🙂 Hmm… Call Of The Mountains mi piace particolarmente da cantare. Mi identifico molto con il testo, e adoro la melodia e l’energia della canzone. Lvgvs è sempre divertente, e poure Catvrix, perché è parecchio intensa. Mi piace un sacco anche fare Artio live, è sempre una sfida immergersi nella storia e, spero, toccare la gente che ascolta. 😉 Una delle mie canzoni preferite degli Eluveitie è Ne Regv Na, e non l’abbiamo mai suonata live per ora… speriamo in futuro! 🙂

Com’è stato l’impatto con una realtà grande come quella degli Eluveitie? Hai sentito pressione durante i primi show e come hai reagito dinanzi a migliaia di spettatori che cantano le canzoni?

Ho sempre avuto un sacco di rispetto per la band prima di unirmi a loro! Il nostro primo concerto in assoluto è stato a gennaio 2017, alla Eluveitie and Friends, ero nervosissima ma anche parecchio curiosa. Lo show mi è piaciuto tantissimo, era incredibile sentire così tanta energia dal pubblico. 🙂

Come ti trovi con le altre ragazze della band, Michalina Malisz e Nicole Ansperger? Vi conoscevate di persona prima di ritrovarvi nella stessa band?

Le adoro! 🙂 Non le conoscevo, no, ma ora siamo amiche fantastiche e sono felicissima di averle conosciute! Ed è fantastico poter chiacchierare di “cose da ragazze” durante il tour! 😉

Cosa ascolta Fabienne Erni quando è a casa lontana dagli impegni professionali?

Al momento canzoni di Natale, ahah. 😉 Adoro i pezzi natalizi svedesi, ma anche quelli più vecchie degli anni cinquanta. Ma a parte quello, di solito ascolto folk (Sofia Karlsson, Triakel) e cantanti magnifici come Eva Cassidy.

Infine ti vorrei chiedere del paragone con Anna Murphy. Ho letto e ascoltato molti pareri in giro, spesso assai diversi tra loro. Chiaramente è una cosa sulla quale ti sarai preparata, ma voglio comunque dirti che la tua prova su Evocation II – Pantheon è di altissimo livello e la tua voce è perfetta per il sound degli Eluveitie. Come hai vissuto e stai vivendo questo “duello” a distanza?

Grazie, davvero. 🙂 Per me è stato fondamentale fin dall’inizio non “rimpiazzare” Anna. Sono un nuovo membro, non sono Anna, sono Fabienne. Porto il meglio che so fare nella band e ci metto il massimo! 🙂

First of all, congratulations for your great work on Evocation II – Pantheon. How do you feel now that the album has been released and reception has basically been universally positive?

Thank you so much for having me. 🙂 It feels great! I am so happy that we got a lot of positive feedback and that people enjoy the album as much as we do. It was a wonderful journey to record this album and an unforgettable experience for me.

You’re Eluveitie’s new vocalist, but not much is known about your history before joining Granzmann’s band. Could you tell us about your past experiences and how you got into music?

Maybe it sounds a bit cheesy, but I simply loved to sing since I was a child. When I was 20 year old I went to Sweden to study one year music there, where I also got in touch with scandinavian folk and metal and fell in love with both of them. At the moment I study music in Zurich to become a singingteacher. I never was in an „own“ band, I only played in school-bands. My passion was and is to accompany myself on the piano while singing. I often sang on weddings, it was like a student-job, which I really enjoyed. And now I am concentrating on Eluveitie 150% ;-).

How did you get in touch with the band? I suppose you had to go through an audition; can you tell us how that went and which songs you had to sing?

Jonas Wolf, our new guitarist, and me went to the same school in Zurich, so we kind of new each other. He recommended me to the band and they contacted me. I had huge respect of this and it took me lots of courage to send in a demo of Call Of The Mountains which I recorded on the phone in the cellar at my home ;-). Later I met the band so we get to know each other. Chrigel and me were recording something together to see how the chemistry is during working. And yes… in the end I was the chosen one! 😉

You play harp and mandola: when was your love for these instruments first born?

I began to learn harp for Eluveitie. I always was fascinated by this instrument, but only played the piano and the guitar before. I am in love with the instrument and it’s exciting to get into this instrument more and more. 🙂

Were the tracks in Evocation II – Pantheon already finalized when you joined the band or did you have some input in the songwriting? Are there songs you feel are more “yours,” and if yes, why?

It was interesting to see, how some songs and some ideas for songs formed and developed during our studio-time. It was my first time that I could record in a professional studio and the time was very intense and cool. We spent so much time together working on the songs, but also cooking together and talking and having a good time. And if I would have to choose one of the song, that feels most „mine“, it is Artio, there I had so much freedom and I love the wonderful melody. 🙂

I really appreciated your work in Artio, I find it to be a very delicate track hitting the listener right in their heart. It brought to mind the great TV show Outlander to me personally. Can you tell us about the lyrics and how you approached this kind of song?

Thank You so much! 🙂 The song is about a celtic woman, that was deported far away from her home. She thinks back to her family, her love, her home and feels sad, lost and desperate. I imagined, that I am this woman, sitting in the nature and missing my family, friends and my love. I am wondering, how they are doing and how my home looks by now. First I am very calm, sad, and introverted. In the end I am desperate and scream out my pain.

Evocation II – Pantheon contains a lot of Irish folk. Is this a genre you appreciate, and do you think there’s space for it in an extreme metal context for the band’s next works?

I really love irish folk, folk in general. This is why I appreciate Eluveitie so much. The different folk instruments mixed with hard metal, what more can I wish for! 😉 For me, when I listen to Eluveitie, I often see a fantasy-scenery in front of my eyes, it has something mystical and imaginative. And yes, of course!! 🙂

What are the tracks in Eluveitie’s metal repertory that you enjoy the most? Is there any song that’s not being played live that you’d like to bring to the stage?

That’s a hard one! 🙂 Hmm… I really enjoy singing Call Of The Mountains. I can relate to the lyrics very well and I love the melody and the energy of the song. Lvgvs is always fun to do as well, also Catvrix, because it’s so intense. I also enjoy doing Artio live, it’s always a challenge to get into the story of the song and hopefully touching the people. 😉 One of my favourite songs of Elu is Ne Regv Na and we never played this one life with me… let’s see about the future! 🙂

What was your first impact with such a huge band like Eluveitie like? Did you feel the pressure during your first shows, and how did you react in front of thousands of people singing your songs?

I had a huge respect of joining such an amazing band! On our very first concert in january 2017 at Eluveitie and Friends, I was very nervous but also very curious. I enjoyed the show so much, it was amazing to feel so much energy from the audience. 🙂

What’s your relationship with the other girls in the band (Michalina Malisz and Nicole Ansperger) like? Did you already know each other before ending up in the same band?

I love them! 🙂 I didn’t know them before, now we are very good friends and I am so happy to have gotten to know them! And sometimes it’s wonderful to have girls-talk on tour! 😉

What does Fabienne Erni listen to when she’s home, away from professional responsibilities?

Right now, christmas songs haha 😉 I love swedish christmas-songs but also old ones from the 50ies :-). But otherwise I mostly listen to folk (Sofia Karlsson, Triakel) and wonderful singers like Eva Cassidy.

Lastly, I’d like to ask you about the comparison with Anna Murphy. I’ve read and heard a lot of opinions, often very contrasting ones, regarding this topic. It’s clearly something you’ve given thought about, but I’d like to say first that your work on Evocation II – Pantheon is of an exceptionally high level and your voice fits the Eluveitie sound perfectly. How are you living this sort of long distance “duel”?

Thank you so much. 🙂 For me it was always important, that I don’t „replace“ Anna. I am a new member, I am not Anna, but Fabienne. I am bringing my best into the band and give it all I got! 🙂
