Intervista: Crom

Il mix che ha sempre contraddistinto la band tedesca continua a funzionare: power, epic e viking vanno a braccetto con una personalità spiccata ma che non finge di avere un forte legame con i grandi del passato. Walter Grosse, da sempre leader dei Crom, prima come unico musicista del progetto, negli ultimi anni in veste di cantante del gruppo, si racconta in questa lunga e interessante chiacchierava avvenuta nelle prime settimane del 2022.

Ciao Walter, è un piacere poterti intervistare. Iniziamo parlando dei musicisti che ora fanno parte dei Crom. In che modo li hai conosciuti e quando hai deciso che era arrivato il momento di diventare una vera band a tutti gli effetti?

Ciao, grazie, è un piacere per me fare quest’intervista! Il primo dei miei “nuovi” compagni di band è stato il chitarrista Steve. Lo conosco da 20 anni ed è stato la mia prima scelta per la posizione di chitarrista solista. È un chitarrista molto talentuoso e molto esperto a cui piace per lo più l’heavy metal classico e il death metal. Non è solo il nostro chitarrista, è anche colui che si occupa di tutto ciò che una band deve fronteggiare oggigiorno. Il nostro batterista è Tom, anche lui un musicista molto esperto che proviene dalla band death/trash metal Sektor. Tom mi è stato consigliato da Steve che lo conosceva da quando hanno suonato insieme ad un concerto per la band death metal principale di Steve, i Path Of Debris. Entrambi sono coinvolti nell’EP Into The Glory Land e lo saranno anche nel nostro nuovo album. Per i live ci sono anche Ivan (chitarre) e Hans (basso) a bordo ad aiutare i Crom. Ho cambiato la mia posizione e farò solo la voce nei nostri live futuri. La mia decisione di diventare una band “reale” è stata presa dopo il processo di mixaggio dell’album When Northmen Die. Le canzoni erano molto buone e ho pensato di presentarle dal vivo. Dopo che Steve si è unito a Crom le cose si sono sviluppate molto velocemente.

Vuoi presentare il nuovo EP Into The Glory Land? Perché la decisione di uscire con un EP?

La decisione è arrivata dalla nostra label. Michael, il capo della From the Vaults ha avuto l’idea di rilasciare un EP come anteprima dell’uscita imminente del full-length. Voleva rilasciare 4 o 5 canzoni nuove, ma questo era troppo per me. Volevo rilasciare solo due nuove canzoni (che sarebbero state incluse anche nell’album) e tre canzoni speciali.  Così mi è venuta l’idea di fare un lato vinile con canzoni heavy metal e un lato con roba acustica. L’idea di fare Wings Of Fire come versione acustica è molto vecchia. Ho già suonato questa canzone in modo simile anni fa. E anche l’idea di questa versione unica di The Hanging Tree è un’idea molto vecchia. A volte bisogna aspettare il momento giusto…

L’EP è disponibile in formato vinile e digitale: come mai è stato escluso il cd? Come è nata la collaborazione con l’etichetta From The Vault?

Non so perché non ci sia la versione CD disponibile. Penso che questa sia una cosa molto speciale della From The Vaults. Loro rilasciano molto spesso EP in vinile. Quindi è qualcosa di speciale per “drogati di vinile” e collezionisti. La collaborazione è nata nel modo più tradizionale di trattare con le etichette. Ho mandato loro le mie nuove canzoni promozionali e Michael è stato molto contento di ascoltare le canzoni. Ha mostrato molto interesse verso i Crom e mi ha mostrato come funziona la promozione nella Target Group (From the Vaults è una sotto etichetta della Target Group). C’erano anche altre label interessate ma ho pensato che From The Vaults sarebbe stata la migliore per il futuro dei Crom. Quindi ci siamo accordati e le cose stanno andando molto bene. C’è una buona comunicazione tra la Label e me e sono una label davvero professionale.

Mi è piaciuta molto la versione acustica di Wings Of Fire: ci saranno rivisitazioni come questa in futuro? Magari un nuovo EP tutto acustico con pezzi vecchi e nuove cover?

Ho davvero in mente da tanti anni l’idea di fare un intero album con molte versioni acustiche e cover. La risposta alle canzoni acustiche è molto buona e non pensavo che alla gente sarebbe piaciuto così tanto. Quindi, forse nel futuro sarà possibile ascoltare nuove canzoni acustiche. Vedremo…

Nell’EP trova spazio anche Song To Hall Up High dei Bathory. Devo dirti che trovo la versione da te realizzata davvero bella e personale pur non allontanandosi da quella realizzata da Quorthon. Hai scelto questo brano perché musicalmente stava bene con le due canzoni che lo precedono in scaletta?

L’idea di usare Song to Hall Up High è venuta durante il primo lockdown. Ho fatto la prima versione demo di questa versione al piano con un mio carissimo amico d’infanzia. Pensavo che la nostra versione si sposasse perfettamente con le altre canzoni quindi abbiamo deciso di registrarla di nuovo e io ho anche fatto una registrazione vocale completamente nuova. Sono completamente a mio agio con questa canzone che è anche una delle mie preferite di tutti i tempi di Bathory.

A proposito dei Bathory, ricordo che al tempo del tuo primo disco si parlava di poche band in grado di seguire il sentiero tracciato dal Quorthon più epico: Crom, Falkenbach ed Ereb Altor erano sulla bocca di tutti gli appassionati del genere. Hai mai avvertito il “peso” di questa eredità?

No, non proprio. Ovviamente all’inizio dei Crom avevo l’intenzione di assomigliare ai Bathory il più possibile. Ma ad essere onesti, non ho mai realmente suonato come Bathory e questo per me va bene. I Crom fanno più heavy metal classico con influenze rock e power. Usare cori e chitarre acustiche non significa assomigliare ai Bathory. Penso che ci siano solo due band che realmente suonano come dei moderni cloni di Bathory: Mayhemic Truth e ovviamente gli Ereb Altor. Grandi band con le stesse vibes di Bathory, specialmente gli Ereb Altor sono veramente bravi nel fare epic metal come sarebbe piaciuto a Quorthon.

Gruppi italiani ne conosci? Penso ai Bloodshed Walhalla che sono tra i gruppi maggiormente bathoriani in circolazione. (o anche di altri generi, se ne conosci)

A dire il vero… non conosco molte band italiane, ma in generale non conosco molte band nuove. Non ho molto tempo libero perché ho una famiglia e sono un lavoratore autonomo. C’è stato un periodo nel quale conoscevo quasi ogni band heavy metal in giro, ma questo non è più possibile per me.

Se posso dirlo, nelle canzoni acustiche sembra che tu riesca a dare il meglio come cantante. Di sicuro dai primissimi lavori hai lavorato parecchio su questa cosa e i risultati si sentono. Hai fatto qualcosa in particolare al fine di migliorare la tua resa?

Va bene perché anch’io penso che il mio cantato sia migliore nelle ballad e nelle canzoni calme. 10 anni fa ho iniziato come cantante di una cover band hard rock sconosciuta chiamata Taarys. Cantare un mix di canzoni di band come Iron Maiden, Europe, Megadeth, Johnny Cash, REM, Tyketto mi ha aiutato molto a sviluppare il mio modo di cantare.

Kris Verwimp ha realizzato tutte le copertine dei lavori dei Crom. Immagino che tra voi ci sia un legame che permette di lavorare insieme con grande semplicità. In che maniera lavorate? Gli invii il materiale, gli descrivi come immagini la copertina o altro?

Sì, ho sempre lavorato insieme a Kris e mi ha sempre dato ciò che più si addice ai Crom. Ovviamente il più delle volte ho detto a Kris quali erano le mie idee, ma ci sono state anche molte idee di Kris direttamente. È una grande parte della storia dei Crom e sono un grande fan dei suoi lavori. Comunque è davvero un bravo ragazzo e una grande persona in privato. Non posso immaginare un progetto dei Crom senza coinvolgere Kris…

Siamo nuovamente in piena pandemia e programmare il futuro, soprattutto per quel riguarda concerti, tour e festival è praticamente impossibile. Come ti stai organizzando e senti il peso di non poter suonare dal vivo?

Ovviamente è molto triste per l’intera scena musicale che il Covid ha fermato i live per quasi due anni. Come quasi ogni altra band stiamo pianificando concerti per quest’anno, ma tutti sappiamo che forse ci saranno molti concerti e festival che saranno cancellati. Quando riapriranno i posti saremo pronti a fare rock!

Torniamo indietro nel tempo: come e quando ti sei avvicinato alla musica? Cosa puoi raccontarci, invece, dei primi passi dei Crom?

È incredibile che 25 anni fa ho provato a realizzare il mio sogno di creare una band che suonasse come un clone di Bathory. Un ragazzo molto giovane con dei sogni e molte emozioni dentro. Non ero un buon cantante, forse ero un buon chitarrista, ma non ero nemmeno un buon autore. Ma ero entusiasta nel mio mondo e non ho mai perso l’entusiasmo fino ad oggi. Quando suoniamo vecchie canzoni come Restless King, Unchain The Hero oppure Wings Of Fire sento le stesse emozioni che sentivo in passato e amo DAVVERO quelle canzoni ancora oggi.

Nel corso del 2022 vedrà la luce il nuovo album: puoi raccontarci qualcosa a tal proposito?

L’album si chiamerà The Era Of Darkness e conterrà 11 tracce. Non è un classico concept album, ma c’è una storia di base in molti dei testi. L’album sarà un po’ più heavy e a tratti più dark di When Northmen Die. Ma ci sarà un tipico mix di canzoni nello stile classico ed epico dei Crom, alcune canzoni heavy e ovviamente alcune ballads. L’album sarà mixato di nuovo da V. Santurq dei Dark Fortress/Tryptikons nel suo studio nell’aprile del 2022. Ovviamente è difficile giudicare un album prima che sia mixato e masterizzato, ma penso che alcune di queste canzoni saranno le migliori dal mio primo album. Sono già euforico per le nuove cose!!!

Spero che un giorno saremo in grado di suonare in Italia!!! Sarebbe davvero un onore per noi!!! So che I fan del metal italiani sono molto interessati all’heavy classico, al power e all’epic metal. Quindi i Crom si adatterebbero perfettamente all’Italia, diavolo sì…

Hi Walter, it’s a pleasure to interview you. Let’s start by talking about the musicians who are now part of Crom. How did you know them and when did you decide it was time to become a real band?

Hi, thanks, it’s a pleasure for me to do this interview! The first one of my “new“ band mates was guitar player Steve. I know him for over 20 years now and he was my first choice for the lead guitar position. He’s a very talented and very skilled guitar player who likes classic heavy metal and death metal most. He’s not only our guitar player, he’s also our man for all the technical things bands must handle with nowadays. Our man on the drums is Tom, also a very skilled musician who comes from the technic death/thrash metal band Sektor. Tom was suggested by Steve who knows Tom from a gig they did together for Steve’s former death metal band Path Of Debris. Both are involved in the Into The Glory Land EP and also will be featured on our new album. For live gigs Ivan (guitars) and Hans (Bass) are also on board and help Crom. I´ve changed my position and I will do the vocals only for the future gigs. My decision to become a “real” band was made after the mixing process of the When Northmen Die album. The stuff was very good and I thought about presenting those songs live. After Steve joined Crom things developed very fast.

Do you want to present the new EP Into the Glory Land? Why the decision to go out with an EP?

The decision came from our new label. Michael, the head of From the Vaults came out with the idea of releasing an EP as a foretaste for the upcoming full length album. He wanted to release 4 or 5 new songs, but this was too much for me. I just wanted to release only two new songs (who will also be again on the new album) and three special songs. So I came up with the idea of doing one vinyl side with heavy metal songs and one side with acoustic / quite stuff. The idea of doing Wings Of Fire as an acoustic version is very old. I’ve already played this song in a similar way years ago. And also the idea of this very unique version of The Hanging Tree is a very old idea. Sometimes you have to wait for the right time to realize your ideas…

The EP is available in both vinyl and digital format: why was the cd excluded? How was the collaboration with the label From the Vault born?

I don’t really know why there is no CD version available. I think this is a very special thing of  From the Vaults. They are releasing vinyl EPs very often. So it’s something special for vinyl junkies and collectors. The collaboration was the very regular way how to talk with labels. I sent them my new promo songs and Michael was very very delighted by the stuff. He showed me the most interest in Crom and showed me how promotion is looking like at Target Group (From the Vaults is a sub label of Target Group). There were also other labels interested but I thought that From the Vaults would be the best for Crom´s future. So we agreed a deal and things are working very well. It’s a very good communication between the label and me and they are a very professional working label.

I liked very much the acoustic version of Wings Of Fire: will there be reinterpretations like this in the future? Maybe a new all acoustic EP with old songs and new covers?

There’s really the idea of doing a complete album with lots of acoustic versions and cover songs in my mind for many years. The response to the acoustic songs are very good and I never thought that people will like it so much. So maybe there can be heard new acoustic songs in the future. Let’s see…

The EP also features Song to Hall Up High by Bathory. I have to tell you that I find your version really beautiful and personal even if it doesn’t go far from the one made by Quorthon. Did you choose this song because musically it was fine with the two songs that precede it in the playlist?

The idea of using Song To Hall Up High came up during the time of the first Corona shutdown. I did a first demo version of this piano version with a very very good childhood friend. I thought that our version would fit to the other songs perfectly and so we decided to record it again and I also did completely new vocal recordings. I’m very comfortable with this song which is also one of my all time faves Bathory songs.

Speaking of Bathory, I remember that at the time of your first record there were a few bands that could follow the path traced by the most epic Quorthon: Crom, Falkenbach and Ereb Altor were the mouthpiece of all fans of the genre. Have you ever felt the “burden” of this legacy?

No, not really. Of course in the beginning of Crom I had the intention of sounding like Bathory as much as I can. But to be honest, I never really sounded like Bathory and that’s ok for me. Crom is much more classic heavy metal with rock and power metal influences. Using choirs and acoustic guitars doesn’t mean that you sound like Bathory. I think there are only two bands who really do sound like modern Bathory “clones”: Mayhemic Truth and of course Ereb Altor. Great bands with the same vibes like Bathory. Especially Ereb Altor are really great in doing epic metal like Quorthon would have liked.

Do you know any Italian groups? I think of Bloodshed Walhalla that are among the most “Bathorian” groups around. (Or even of other genres, if you know)

To be honest… I don’t really know much Italian bands but I also don’t know very much new bands in general. I don’t have a lot of free time because I have family and I’m working as a self employed. There was a time when I knew almost every heavy metal band in the whole circus but this is no more possible for me.

If I may say so, in acoustic songs, you seem to be at your best as a singer. I’m sure you’ve been working a lot on this since the very first few jobs, and you can feel the results. Did you do anything in particular to improve your surrender?

It´s ok because I also think that my singing is best in ballads and calm songs. 10 years ago I started as a singer of an unknown hard rock cover band called Taarys. To sing a mixture of songs of bands like Iron Maiden, Europe, Megadeth, Johnny Cash, REM, Tyketto… helped me a lot to develop my singing.

Kris Verwimp made all the artworks for Crom’s works. I imagine there is a bond between you that allows you to work together with great simplicity. How do you work? Do you send him the material, describe the cover or something?

Yes, I always worked together with Kris and he always gave me what fits perfectly to Crom. Of course I told Kris most of the times what my ideas are but there were also a lot of ideas directly from Kris. He’s a big part of Crom’s history and I’m a big admirer of his work. By the way he’s a very very nice guy and great person in private. I cannot imagine a Crom project without Kris being involved…

We’re once again in the midst of the pandemic and planning for the future, especially with regard to concerts, tours and festivals, is practically impossible. How are you planning and you feel the burden of not being able to play live?

Of course it’s very sad for the whole music scene that covid almost killed live music for almost two years now. Like almost every other band we are planning gigs for this year but we all know maybe that the were be lots of gigs and festivals canceled. Let’s wait and see what future will bring. When locations will open we will be ready to rock!!

Let’s go back in time: how and when did you approach the music? What can you tell us about the first steps of Crom?

It’s unbelievable 25 years ago that I tried to realize my dream of doing a band who will sound like a Bathory clone. A very young guy with dreams and lots of emotions inside. I was not a very good singer, maybe a good guitar player but also not a very good songwriter. But I was enthusiastic in my own world and I’ve never lost this enthusiasm til today. When we are playing old songs like The Restless King, Unchain The Hero or Wings Of Fire I still feel the same emotions like I did in the past and I REALLY still love those songs.

During 2022 the new album will see the light: can you tell us something about it?

The album will be called The Era Of Darkness and it will contain 11 songs. It’s not a concept album in a classical way but there is a basic story in lots of the lyrics. The album will be a little bit heavier and sometimes darker than When Northmen Die. But there still will be a typical mix of songs in the classical epic Crom style, some heavy songs and of course some ballads. The album will be mixed again by Dark Fortress/Tryptikons V. Santura in his woodshed studios in April 2022. Of course it´s difficult to judge an album before it´s mixed and mastered, but I think some of these songs will be the best since my first album. I´m already hot for the new stuff!!!

I hope that sometimes we will be able to play live at Italy!!! I would really be an honour for us!!! I know that italian metal fans are a lot into classic heavy, power and epic metal. So Crom would fit perfectly tom Italy, hell yeah!!!
