Intervista: Skyforger

Gli Skyforger, padrini del pagan metal, sono in Italia per un mini tour di tre date che li vede headliner. Ho pensato quindi di fare un’intervista un po’ diversa dal solito, parlando sì del tour, ma anche dell’importanza della cultura e della storia lettone nella musica degli Skyforger e dei loro recenti successi a livello nazionale. Hanno realizzato una metal opera su un mito nazionale portando all’evento 5000 persone. Stanno sdoganando il metal a suon di riconoscimenti e lo sfanno facendo con una musica tutt’altro che commerciale. In attesa del loro show di domani al Mister Folk Festival di Roma, ecco le parole del leader Peter, buona lettura!

Sarete per la prima volta in Italia per un mini tour da headliner, cosa vi aspettate da queste date?

Ciao Fabrizio! Si, in questo momento stiamo guidando da Milano a Brescia per andare al primo concerto. Il sole splende ed è bello essere in Italia, la casa di civiltà e filosofi antichissimi! Abbiamo ancora un po’ di postumi di sbornia dopo il nostro giorno libero a Milano, ahah. Non sappiamo cosa aspettarci, visto che ogni città che visiteremo sarà una cosa nuova per noi. Ma personalmente spero che ci siano un po’ di fan a vederci, e suoneremo al meglio, anche se ci sarà solo una persona davanti al palco!

Per il Mister Folk Festival di Roma possiamo aspettarci qualche piccola novità?

Beh, visto che è il nostro primo tour in Italia, suppongo che non ci siano molti fan che sanno chi siamo o conoscono la nostra musica. È molto diverso in Lettonia, ovviamente. Per questo tour abbiamo preparato un piano da Best Of, ci saranno canzoni provenienti da ognuno dei nostri album.

Il vostro ultimo disco Senprūsija è stato pubblicato tre anni fa: a che punto siete con le nuove canzoni? Dovremo aspettare molto per il prossimo lavoro e, se possibile, si possono avere alcune indiscrezioni?

Si, l’album è stato rilasciato nel 2015, e abbiamo preso la sua promozione molto sul serio, abbiamo girato in tour per due anni senza fermarci. Abbiamo fatto più o meno 35-40 concerti sia nel 2015 che nel 2016. Abbiamo visitato 17 paesi diversi in questo ciclo di tour (il più lontano è stato il Brasile), ma penso che in molti posti in cui non siamo ancora stati suoni ancora nuovo e fresco. Tra i tour e il lavoro di tutti i giorni siamo anche entrati in studio per lavorare su nuove canzoni e idee, ma ci vorranno ancora un po’ di anni per completare un nuovo album. Dovremmo invitare una musa creativa a farci visita più spesso, ahah!

La scorsa estate c’è stato un evento incredibile che vi ha visto protagonisti, la Metālopera Kurbads. Kēves Dēls. Devo dire che sono rimasto sorpreso e affascinato dallo spettacolo, come è nata l’idea e quanto lavoro c’è stato dietro per coordinare danzatori, attori e voi musicisti?

Oh, quello si che è stato una cosa speciale. È uno dei motivi per cui stiamo avendo un po’ di difficoltà nel creare nuove canzoni, dovevamo insegnare i brani dell’album a nuovi elementi della band, e adattarli per il palcoscenico in modo da far sembrare il tutto davvero una “metal opera”, e non come un concerto qualsiasi! La musica è toccata principalmente a noi, ma il copione e la scenografia sono stati creati dalla giovane e bravissima regista Inga Tropa del New Riga Theater. Abbiamo avuto altri registi e curatori per la coreografia, gli attori, i costumi, il video, dettagli tecnici eccetera. Ci abbiamo messo otto mesi per fare tutto dall’inizio alla fine. Nessuno sapeva come sarebbe finita, ahah! Ma è stato grandioso. Più di 5000 persone sono venute in questo paesino lontano dalla capitale, e ogni recensione è stata positiva. Per noi, un gruppo metal (!!!), è stata un’esperienza fantastica vederli tutti li sul prato, per uno spettacolo lungo un’ora e mezza! Magari l’anno prossimo lo faremo ancora.

La Metālopera Kurbads. Kēves Dēls si trova online da guardare in streaming, ma mi chiedo se possa essere una buona idea realizzare il dvd della serata (magari con sottotitoli in inglese delle parti recitate) perché è uno spettacolo che merita davvero di essere conosciuto al di fuori della Lettonia!

Già, chiunque può vederla su internet quando vuole in streaming, il link è sul nostro sito. È il motivo per cui non abbiamo fatto nessun piano per una edizione DVD. In parte però è anche per motivi di copyright.

Vuoi raccontare la storia di Kurbads per chi non possiede il cd e non conosce i testi?

Allora… la storia è lunga e complessa, ma in poche parole – abbiamo molti racconti popolari che provengono da epoche lontane, quando le persone si sedevano attorno al fuoco e gli anziani raccontavano ai bambini storie che essi avrebbero ripetuto un giorno ai loro figli. Dunque, c’era questo eroe nazionale, Kurbads, nato da una puledra bianca e dalla forza sovraumana. Combattè contro diavoli, orchi giganti con tre, sei, perfino nove teste, la Strega Serpente e altri mostri. E alla fine della storia affronta il Cavaliere Nero, e muoiono entrambi. [NdT: Melnais Jātnieks è tradotto in inglese come Black Rider. Purtroppo il mio lettone scritto è un po’ arrugginito, ed è la traduzione migliore che ho trovato – ma in realtà si tratta di un orco (non saprei dire con quante teste)] Ovviamente si tratta solo di fantasy, ma il messaggio è più profondo di quanto sembri. È la storia di un paese in cerca di libertà, la volontà di morire per proteggere le persone comuni. L’abbiamo trovata affascinante e abbiamo deciso di dedicarci un intero album. Molta gente, perfino qui in Lettonia, non conosce questa storia e vogliamo far riscoprire una parte della nostra eredità culturale che è stata dimenticata da troppo tempo. Come mai avete pubblicato Senprūsija e l’ottimo DVD Senprūsija Live con la Thunderforge Records dopo che il disco Kurbads era uscito per la potente Metal Blade Records? Il prossimo lavoro sarà sotto Thunderforge?

È molto semplice. Il nostro contratto con Metal Blade era scaduto, e abbiamo dovuto scegliere se firmare per un’altra label o aprire direttamente la nostra. Alla fine abbiamo deciso di restare indipendenti, ed è iniziato tutto così. Abbiamo registrato un nuovo album al nostro studio, l’abbiamo mixato e anche masterizzato, abbiamo fatto l’artwork e l’abbiamo rilasciato. È un Do It Yourself dall’inizio alla fine, ahah! Suppongo faremo il prossimo album nella stessa maniera, ma per ora ce n’è di tempo.

Parlando della scena folk pagan lettone, ci sono delle realtà che vuoi segnalare ai lettori di Mister Folk?

Qui non c’è una grossa scena folk o pagan, anzi, non credo di poter dire che ci sia una vera e propria scena metal. Siamo una band unica sui nostri palcoscenici. Ci sono gruppi che fanno cose folk, ma non fanno metal – ad esempio Iļģi, grande band post-folk. O il gruppo di tamburi e cornamuse Auļi [presente come ospite nel dvd Senprūsija Live, ndMF].

Pensi che con la musica e i testi degli Skyforger le persone si siano avvicinate alla storia e alla tradizione della Lettonia? Può essere questo uno degli obiettivi degli Skyforger?

Assolutamente. Sin dal principio è stato uno degli elementi fissi nel nostro pensiero; abbiamo fatto album e scelto argomenti che all’inizio appassionavano solo noi, ma col passare del tempo le persone hanno iniziato ad avvicinarsi e farci sapere che, grazie alla nostra musica, si sono interessati alla storia, si sono uniti a gruppi di rievocazione medievale e antica, hanno iniziato a suonare strumenti folk, o si sono comunque avvicinati in qualche modo al patrimonio culturale della Lettonia. È molto bello sapere che il progetto Skyforger è stato come un faro che li ha guidati verso queste cose. Molti fan stranieri conoscono la Lettonia solo grazie alla nostra musica, e grazie ad essa alcuni sono addirittura venuti fino a Riga, hanno visitato i nostri castelli sulle colline o sono venuti ai concerti. Ad esempio, recentemente un tizio è arrivato a Riga dalla Turchia. Ci sono state cose anche più folli, un fan ungherese ha imparato la lingua lettone solo perché gli piaceva la nostra musica. Alla fine siamo diventati grandi amici.

Avete vinto il Music Award nel 2010 e nel 2015, avete fatto una metalopera, suonate in contesti non prettamente metal, quindi è chiaro che in Lettonia siete visti con un occhio diverso dal “gli Skyforger sono un gruppo metal estremo”, piuttosto siete “un gruppo lettone”, al di là del genere. Ti confesso che per me è strano e meraviglioso al tempo stesso, in Italia i gruppi metal sono ancora visti come parte di una “sottocultura” e pericolosi. Ti chiedo quindi se il messaggio del gruppo cambia il modo in cui una band viene vista dall’esterno. Gli Skyforger sarebbero gli Skyforger con dei testi “tipicamente metal”?

Non so, non so proprio cosa saremmo se ci fosse qualcosa di diverso… Questo è quello che siamo, non lo possiamo cambiare. In Lettonia stiamo lentamente distruggendo i muri del pregiudizio, tutti gli stereotipi che le persone tradizionalmente hanno verso i gruppi metal. Capelli lunghi, barba, pezze ai vestiti, magliette dei gruppi… La gente qui tende a pensare che sei un alcolizzato, un drogato, un senzatetto o qualcosa del genere. È anche d’esempio per le scene locali e i media, il fatto che puoi avere successo facendo musica estrema e non solo cantando dolci pezzi pop alla radio è importante. A proposito, il mese scorso abbiamo vinto il più importante riconoscimento culturale della Lettonia, per il lavoro fatto con Kurbads e l’intero spettacolo che abbiamo creato. Quando abbiamo iniziato, 25 anni fa, il nostro unico obiettivo era suonare metal aggressivo come i Venom e i Manowar, bere birra e sbattere la testa, ahah! Ma ora siamo quasi degli ambasciatori culturali dell’intera Lettonia. Non l’avrei mai immaginato, eheh.

Le foto promozionali che girano sul web sono davvero molto belle, ti chiedo quindi dove sono state scattate, magari c’è qualcuno che vorrebbe visitare la Lettonia e avere qualche indicazione potrebbe essere utile!

Abbiamo fatto tutto qui in Lettonia, ovviamente. Visto che siamo del posto, spesso giriamo per le foreste e i parchi e durante i nostri viaggi abbiamo conosciuto quei luoghi per bene. Non è facile trovare esattamente il luogo su un GPS, ahah, ma se qualcuno è interessato possiamo sempre provare a spiegare come arrivarci.

Grazie Pēteris per la disponibilità, ci vediamo al festival! Hai un messaggio per i fan italiani?

Grazie mille anche a te per averci invitato in Italia e a Roma! Spero che ci saranno nuovi fan che conosceranno gli Skyforger e la nostra musica, e che sapranno finalmente dove si trova la Lettonia. Quello sarebbe la ricompensa più grande per noi. E chissà, magari ci suoneremo di nuovo in futuro.

You’ll be in Italy for the first time, headlining a mini-tour. What are your expectations regarding the various dates? Hello Fabrizio!

Yes, we are now driving from Milan to Brescia, to the first concert. Sun is shining and feels good to be in Italy, the home of olden civilizations and ancient philosophers! We have a bit hangovers after day off in Milan haha. We don’t know what to expect, since all cities we gonna visit are new to us. But I personally hope that some fans will come to see our show, and we will play from best of the heart, even if there are 1 person standing at front of stage!

Can we expect anything new or special for the Mister Folk Festival in Rome?

Well, since this is first tour in Italy, I guess not many fans knows our name and music. In Latvia it’s different, of course. For this case, we have prepared a Best Of program, there will songs from all our albums.

Senprūsija, your latest album, was published three years ago. What’s the current status of your work? How long will we have to wait to listen to new material, and, if possible, can you tell us anything about it?

Yes, album was released in 2015, and took it’s promotion seriously, we toured two years non stop. It was about 35-40 concerts and festivals in both 2015 and 2016. We visited 17 countries in this tour cycle (the farest land was Brazil), but I guess that in many places where we have not been, it sounds like a still fresh album. In between touring and everyday working, we have also been working in studio on new songs and ideas, but that will take still some couple of years to complete new album. We need to invite that creative muse more often haha!

Last summer an incredible event took place: Metālopera Kurbads. Kēves Dēls. I have to admit I was very surprised and fascinated by the show, how did the project come to be and how much work did you have to do to organize all the dancers, actors, and musicians?

Oh, that indeed was something special. That’s one of reasons why new songs are not coming so easy, because we needed to teach this album to new guys in band, and adapt it to the stage form, so it really looks like “metal opera” and it’s not just another gig! We were mostly responsible for musical part, but the script and scene outlook was thought by young and very talanted director Inga Tropa from New Riga Theater. There was also involved another directors for choreography, actors, costume, video, technical things etc.  Whole thing from start to finish took 8 months. No one knew what will be the end result haha! But it was very great. To this small city far away from capital came more than 5000 visitors and later we heard only positive reviews. For us, the metal band (!!!) it was very fantastic to see them out there in the field, for 1.5 hour long spectacle! Maybe we will do it one more time next year.

Metālopera Kurbads. Kēves Dēls can be stramed online, but I’m wondering if it could ever be a physical DVD (maybe with English subtitles). It’s a show that deserves to be much more well-known, beyond Latvia!

Yes, everyone can see this in live stream anytime on internet, link is at our homepage. That’s why so far there are no any plans for DVD release. Partly also because of copyright issues.

Can you tell Kurbads’ story to those of us who don’t own a CD or know the lyrics?

Well… The story is long and vast, but in few words – we have many folk tales coming from ages ago, when people were sitting around bonfires, and old people told them to youngsters and they later retold again to own children. So, there was a national hero Kurbads, who was born from white mare and had unusual strength. He fought against devils, gigantic ogres with 3, 6 and 9 heads, snake witch and another monsters. At the end of story he fights against Black Rider, and both die. Of course, it is just fantasy but the message is much bigger inside. That is small country’s quest for freedom, wish to die for protection of ordinary people. We found it fascinating and decided to dedicate an album for that. Many people even here did not know that and this is how we again uncovered long forgotten piece of our ancient heritage. Full story, lyrics again are at our homepage for fans to read.

How come you chose to publish Senprūsija and the excellent Senprūsija Live DVD with Thunderforge Records when Kurbads was released under the mighty Metal Blade? Will Thunderforge publish your next work as well?

This is pretty simple. We had our contract expired with Metal Blade, so we needed either to sign with another record label, or maybe to start our own. At the end we decided to be independent and so it started. New album is recorded at our own studio, we mixed and mastered it too, made artwork, and also released. So it is Do It Yourself from start to finish haha. I guess we will do also next albums same way, but so far it is still a long way to go.

Talking about the folk/pagan scene in Latvia, is there any band or performer you’d like our readers to know about?

There are not big folk or pagan scene here, or even a whole metal scene. We are one of the kind band here. There are few bands who does things with folk music, but they are not metal. For example, there are great post-folk band Iļģi. Or drum and bagpipe band Auļi.

Do you think Skyforger’s lyrics and music has helped introduce people to Latvia’s history and traditions? Is this one of the goals Skyforger wants to achieve?

Definitely. From the start, we did not think about it much, we did albums and picked out topics which were interesting only for ourselves, but later started to come people and told us that they were influenced by our albums and this got into history, became members of ancient reenactment warrior clubs, started to play folk instruments, or become involved in one way or another with Latvian cultural heritage. That is nice to know that that Skyforger has been showing some guiding lights for them. Many foreign fans has got to know about Latvia because of our music, and even been coming to Riga, visited those castle hills or our concerts. Recently for example one guy from Turkey flew to Riga. Or even more crazy example, one Hungarian fan learned Latvian language just because he likes our music. He is now good friend to us.

You won a Music Award in 2010 and 2015, you put together a metal opera, you play your music in contexts that aren’t strictly metal – it’s pretty clear that, in Latvia, you’re seen in a different light than just “an extreme metal band”, you’re a Latvian band beyond genre definitions. I admit it’s both weird and fascinating to me, since in Italy metal bands are still seen as part of an “under-culture” and somewhat dangerous. I want to ask you if you believe that the band’s message is changing the way a band is perceived from the outside. Would Skyforger be Skyforger with more “traditionally” metal lyrics and themes?

I don’t know, what we would be if we would be any different… This is how we are, we can’t change ourselves. In Latvia we are slowly breaking down walls of prejudices how metal bands are traditionally seen and perceived. Long hair, beard, metal shirts and patches… so this guy must be either alcoholic or drug addict, homeless or that sort of stuff. Also this is example for local scene and media that you can get known also with extreme metal music, not only singing sweet radio friendly pop songs. By the way, last month we got most respectable Latvian cultural award, this was for Kurbads metal opera as a whole show. When we started 25 years ago, our only wish was to play loud metal like Venom or Manowar, drink beer and bang heads haha! But now we are a bit like cultural messengers for all things Latvian. Would never imagined that before haha.

Your promo material floating about the web is excellent, especially the pictures. Where were they taken? Somebody might want to visit those places in Latvia and having any indication could help!

Everything is done here in Latvia, of course. Since we are local, we often go to nature, forests and we got know those places during our trips. Not so easy to point out exact GPS location haha, but if needed, we can try to explain.

Pēteris, thank you so much for your availability, see you at the festival! Do you have a message for all your Italian fans?

Thank you very much too, for your kind invitation to Italy and Rome! I hope that there will some fans who will get to know Skyforger, discover our music and to know where Latvia is. Then it will be the best reward for us. And maybe we can play again here sometimes in future.
