Intervista: Sorcieres

La Francia ha una ricca scena folk/pagan metal, ma per qualche ragione non ha mai prodotto gruppi in grado di imporsi a livello internazionale. I giovani Sorcières hanno qualità e grinta da vendere e potrebbero essere la prossima sorpresa proveniente dall’underground: d’altra parte un lavoro avvincente come il debutto Empoisonné non si realizza tutti i giorni e a sentire le parole del leader Thibaut Marlard c’è da scommettere che ce la metteranno tutta per emergere.

Benvenuti su Mister Folk! Presentate il gruppo ai lettori del sito.

Ciao e grazie! Siamo una band black/folk metal dal nord della Francia. Ho iniziato questo progetto musicale da solo nel 2016 e ho conosciuto i miei compagni di band un anno dopo. Conoscevo il cantante Pierre-Alain da molti anni, ma fino ad allora era troppo timido per provare a cantare in una band, anche se era davvero bravo.  Abbiamo registrato un EP nel 2016 con gli ex membri Roman (chitarra) e Alex (batteria), e abbiamo suonato in Francia e Belgio, poi nel 2020 la lineup è cambiata un po’ con Tritt (dai Cave Growl, un’altra band folk metal francese) alla batteria e me alle chitarre; gli altri membri sono Marie (violino) e David (basso). Abbiamo registrato il primo album Empoisonné durante la crisi del Covid-19 e ora siamo pronti a salire di nuovo sul palco!

Il vostro nome significa streghe: da dove nasce questa scelta e c’è un legame tra il nome e i testi delle canzoni?

Questa è una forte figura mitica a cui ci sentiamo legati, perché è senza tempo e la puoi trovare in ogni cultura, ha un profondo legame con la natura, la società, l’oscurità interiore, la psicologia e il folklore. Quindi sì, ci sono molti riferimenti alla stregoneria nei testi. Ma non siamo legati a questo nome, ci sentiamo liberi di fare canzoni e testi su molti altri argomenti.

Dovendo dare delle coordinate musicale ai lettori che non vi conoscono, come descrivereste la vostra musica e con quali gruppi sentite di avere qualcosa in comune?

Suoniamo blackened folk metal con un po’ di heavy metal e a volte parti di death metal, siamo aperti a molte influenze, ma dobbiamo restare folk ed extreme metal. Ci piacciono ovviamente Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Thyrfing, ma anche Otyg, Asmegin, Agalloch, Melechesh, Primordial, Negura Bunget… e molte altre, ma queste sono solo le influenze maggiori.

Avete da poco pubblicato il primo full-length dal titolo Empoisonné (tr.: avvelenato), un lavoro per me ben fatto e piacevole da ascoltare. Potete raccontare qualsiasi cosa sul vostro nuovo disco!

È stato un lavoro enorme, dato che abbiamo fatto tutto da soli (registrazione, missaggio, illustrazioni…) e abbiamo avuto qualche difficoltà con le restrizioni del Covid-19: molte discussioni sull’album erano solo via discord o telefono, le chitarre e la batteria erano registrate separatamente a casa. Ho registrato sia la chitarra ritmica, solista che quella folk, ecco perché ora stiamo cercando un secondo chitarrista per suonare l’album.

Trovo la copertina dell’album molto bella, volete dirci qualcosa a riguardo? Cosa rappresenta la donna all’interno della luna?

Grazie, questo è un villaggio che brucia su una collina, facendolo sembrare come un vulcano, circondato da foreste dove puoi vedere sagome di streghe. Alcuni elementi sono presi dalla cover dell’EP, ma li trovi solo se guardi attentamente. La ragazza nella luna rappresenta il destino di una donna condannata per stregoneria. Questa è la storia principale dell’album.

Su Empoisonné è presente una sola canzone che fa parte del precedente EP Sombres Danses: vuol dire che in due anni avete creato tanta nuova musica e che la ritenete migliore di quanto realizzato in passato? Troveranno spazio le vecchie canzoni in un prossimo lavoro, magari ri-arrangiate o in chiave acustica?

Ci sono canzoni che suoniamo da molto tempo (A Feu Et à Sang, Défloraison), e nuove (Cavalière Des Ronces, Dans Ces Eaux). Non so se sono migliori, ci piacciono la maggior parte e vogliamo ancora suonare i brani più vecchi dell’EP. Ad esempio, suoniamo Ophidia ogni volta in concerto. Ma ora abbiamo troppe canzoni per un normale spettacolo di 45 minuti, dovremo scegliere.

Ho davvero apprezzato la musica e il testo delle canzoni di Empoisonné, soprattutto Les Yeux Verts. Ci volete parlare del suo testo?

Grazie, questa canzone è la descrizione delle streghe che circondano il villaggio, vengono da luoghi diversi e radunano i loro spiriti di notte, questo secondo le leggende dei contadini locali, ma nessuno le ha viste davvero con precisione. Gli occhi verdi (Les Yeux Verts) dovevano essere un segno di magia e quindi del diavolo.

Farete un concept album interamente dedicato alle streghe del medioevo o sull’ultima strega europea Anna Goldi? O qualcosa su Salem…

Penso che non faremo un album su un preciso evento storica, non perché non sia interessante, ma perché tutti possono leggere su esso su Wikipedia, preferiamo inventare una storia da noi.

Ci sono leggende e storie francesi di streghe? Ci potete consigliare libri o canzoni che trattano questi argomenti?

C’è una regione nella Francia centrale chiamata Berry che è piena di superstizioni e storie di stregoneria, anche ancora ai nostri giorni. Nella nostra regione ho solo sentito della leggenda di Marie Grauète. Puoi trovare canzoni su questo in picard antico (lingua regionale), ma è solo una storia usata per tenere i bambini lontani dalle paludi. La cosa interessante è quando non puoi distinguere tra la leggenda e la realtà, c’erano molti fatti di stregoneria in Francia, persino a corte.

Molti gruppi folk metal hanno inciso dischi o EP completamente acustici: vi piace la dimensione più intima e credere che farete qualcosa del genere in futuro?

Sì, ci piacerebbe fare un EP acustico (magari non un album intero) in futuro. Questo si adatterebbe perfettamente alle melodie delle nostre canzoni, facciamo già prove acustiche a volte quando siamo fuori.

Se ci sarà la possibilità di realizzare un album acustico prenderete in considerazione l’idea di aggiungere flauti e voci pulite o proseguirete col contrasto tra strumenti acustici e voce growl?

Sicuramente, ci piacerebbe aggiungere molti strumenti. Amo il suono del clarinetto con la sua vibe balcanica/orientale, e il flauto traverso penso vada bene con le nostre canzoni, ma forse anche una fisarmonica. Mi piacerebbe molto provare il mix di growl del metal con gli strumenti acustici come fecero gli Ensiferum alcuni anni fa. Questo è ciò che ci piace nel sottogenere del folk metal: è difficile farlo suonare giusto, ma puoi provare diverse combinazioni musicali.

Siete di Lille: com’è la scena musicale dalle vostre parti? Vi sentite parte di quella folk/viking francese e in generale di quella europea? Ci sono gruppi con i quali collaborate e vi aiutate a vicenda?

C’è una scena metal veramente attiva nella nostra regione! Non molte band folk metal, ma abbiamo molti amici in band heavy, symphonic, black o death. Johanne dei Dust and Darkness suona il flauto nel nostro album (L’auberge Des Corps Perdus). Volevo invitare altri ospiti sull’album, ma non avevamo abbastanza tempo, sarà per la prossima volta! Speriamo di vedere i concerti locali tornare al più presto possibile a Lille. Conosciamo molte band folk metal francesi perché ci abbiamo già suonato (il batterista ed io eravamo in altre band folk metal prima dei Sorcières). Puoi ascoltare i Toter Fisch, Boisson Divine, Adaryn, Veliocasses, Arseis, Drenai, Mormieben, Piktan Matkan. È una piccola scena se la compari alla scena black metal francesi o di altri generi, ma ogni band ha idee interessanti e un’identità forte.

Come avete vissuto il periodo Covid-19? Ne avete “approfittato” per comporre nuova musica o avete, se così si può dire, “ricaricato le pile”?

Abbiamo avuto molti concerti cancellati nel 2020 il che è stato veramente frustrante, quello è stato un periodo molto triste per noi e per i musicisti in generale, quindi abbiamo usato questo tempo per finire alcune canzoni, aggiornare le altre e finalmente registrare l’album!

Progetti per questa ultima parte dell’anno e per il 2022?

Al momento stiamo cercando un secondo chitarrista, e vogliamo suonare live di nuovo. Molte canzoni dall’album non sono ancora mai state suonate sul palco, quindi non vediamo l’ora! Dovremmo avere uno o due concerti in autunno e ne abbiamo già uno carino per il 2022. Solo in Francia per ora. Forse inizieremo a scrivere musica per un altro album in inverno ma dobbiamo prima provare la scaletta attuale.

Welcome on Mister Folk! Introduce the group to the readers of the site.

Hello and thank you! We are a Black Folk Metal band from northern France. I started this musical project alone in 2016 and met my bandmates one year later. I knew the singer: Pierre-Alain for many years, but until then he was too shy to try his voice in a band, although he was really good. We recorded an EP in 2019 “Sombres Danses” with former members Roman (guitar) and Alex (drums), and played in France and Belgium, then in 2020 the lineup changed a bit with Tritt (from Cave Growl, an other french folk metal band) playing the drums, and me on guitars, the other members being Marie (violin) and David (bass). We recorded the first full-length album Empoisonné during the Covid-19 crisis and now we are ready to hit the stage again!

Your name means “witches”: where does this choice come from and is there a link between the name and the lyrics of the songs?

This is a strong mythical figure that we feel connected to, because it’s timeless and you can find it in every culture, it has a deep link with nature, society, inner darkness, psychology and folklore. So yes there are many references to witchcraft in the lyrics. But we are not bound by this name, we feel free to make songs and lyrics about a lot of other subjects.

If you have to give musical coordinates to the readers who don’t know you, how would you describe your music and with which bands do you feel you have something in common?

We play blackened folk metal with some heavy metal and sometimes death metal parts, we are open to many influences, but it must stay folk, and extreme metal. We like of course Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Thyrfing, but also Otyg, Asmegin, Agalloch, Melechesh, Primordial, Negura Bunget… and many more, but these are the main influences.

You recently have published the first full-length entitled Empoisonné (tr.: poisoned), a well done work and pleasant to listen to. You can tell anything about your new record!

It was a lot of work since we did everything ourselves,(recording, mixing, illustrations..) and we had some difficulties with the covid restrictions: a lot of discussions about the album were only via Discord or telephone, the guitars and drums were recorded separately at home. I recorded both rythm, lead and folk guitar, that’s why we are now looking for a second guitarist to play the album.

I think that the album’s cover is very beautiful, would you like to tell us something about it? What does the lady in the moon mean?

Thank you, this is a village burning on a hill, making it look like a volcano, surrounded by forests where you can see witches’ shapes. Some elements are taken from the EP cover, but you will find them only if you look closely. The lady in the moon represents the destiny of a woman executed for witchcraft. That is the main story of the album.

On Empoisonné there is only one song that is part of the previous EP Sombres Danses: does it mean that in two years you have created a lot of new music and that you think it is better than what you have done in the past? Will the old songs find their place in a future work, perhaps re-arranged or in an acoustic key?

There are songs we play for a long time (A Feu Et à Sang, Défloraison), and new ones (Cavalière Des Ronces, Dans Ces Eaux) I don’t know if they are better, we like most of them and we still want to play older songs from the EP. For example we play Ophidia every time in concert. But now we have too many songs for a regular 45 min show, we will have to choose.

I really appreciate the music and the lyrics of all the songs in Empoisonné, in particular Les Yeux Verts. Would you tell us what all the lyrics are about?

Thank you, this song is the description of the witches surrounding the village, they come from different places and gather their spirits at night… according to the legends of the local peasants, but no one has really seen them precisely. Green eyes (Les Yeux Verts) were supposed to be a sign of magic and therefore the devil.

Will there be a concept album entirely dedicated to medieval witches or to the last European witch, Anna Goldi? And what about Salem’s witches?

I think we won’t make an album about a precise historical event, not because it’s not interesting but because everyone can already read about it on Wikipedia, we prefer to invent a concept or story ourselves.

Are there any French interesting legends or stories about witches? Would you recommend us some books or songs about that?

There is a region in the middle of France called Berry which is full of superstitions and witchcraft stories, even still in our days. In our region I only heard about the legend of the Marie Grauète. You can find songs about it in old picard (regional language) but it’s just a story used to keep the children away from the swamps. The interesting thing is when you can not tell the difference between the legends and reality, there were a lot of witchcraft affairs in France, even at the royal court.

Many folk metal bands have recorded fully acoustic records or EPs: do you like the more intimate dimension and believe that you will do something like this in the future?

Yes, we would love to do an acoustic EP (maybe not a full album) in the future. That would fit the melodies of our songs perfectly, we already make acoustic rehearsals sometimes when we are outside.

If there will be the possibility of an acoustic album, will you consider the idea to add some flutes and the clean voice or you’ll keep the contrast between acoustic music and growl?

Definitely, we would like to add many instruments. I love the sound of the clarinet with its balkanic/oriental vibe, and classical flute and I think it fits well with our songs, but maybe accordion too. I would love to try the mix of metal growls and acoustic instruments like Ensiferum did a few years ago. That’s what we like in the folk metal subgenre: it’s hard to make it sound right but you can try a lot of musical combinations.

You are from Lille: how it’s the music scene in your area? Do you feel part of the French folk / viking scene and in general of the European one? Are there any groups you collaborate with and help each other with?

There is a very active metal scene in our region! Not so much folk metal but we have a lot of friends in heavy, symphonic, black or death metal bands. Johanne from the band Dusk and Darkness is playing the flute on our album (L’auberge Des Corps Perdus). I wanted to invite more guests to the album but we didn’t have enough time, it will be for the next one! We hope to see the local concerts coming back as soon as possible in Lille. We know a lot of French Folk Metal bands since we already played with them (the drummer and I were in folk bands before Sorcières) You can check out Toter Fisch, Boisson Divine, Adaryn, Veliocasses, Arseis, Drenai, Mormieben, Pitkan Matkan… It is a small scene if you compare it to French black metal or other genres, but every band has interesting ideas and a strong identity.

How did you lived the Covid-19 period? Did you “take advantage” of it to compose new music or did you “recharge your batteries”, so to speak?

We had many concerts cancelled in 2020, which was very frustrating, that was a very grim period for us and musicians in general, so we used this time to finish some songs, upgrade the others and  finally record the album!

Do you have any plans for this last part of the year and for 2022?

We are currently looking for a second guitarist, and we want to play live again. Many songs from the album haven’t been played on stage yet so we can’t wait! We should have one or two concerts in autumn and already have a nice one for 2022. Only in France for now. Maybe we’ll start to write music for another album this winter but we must first practice the current set list.
