Intervista: Vansind

L’underground folk metal è vasto, affollato e pieno di band di valore. I danesi Vansind stanno cercando di farsi largo a suon di chitarre e tin whistle grazie al breve ma riuscito EP MXIII. Mister Folk ha il piacere di farvi leggere le parole del gruppo nord europeo, alla prima intervista italiana: buona lettura!

Credo che questa sia la vostra prima intervista italiana, iniziamo quindi parlando della vostra storia.

Ciao Mister Folk, un caldo saluto per te e per tutti i tuoi lettori dalla Danimarca e dai Vansind, e un enorme grazie a te per averci dato l’opportunità di dirvi un po’ su noi stessi e sulla nostra musica! La band Vansind è un settetto, e sebbene si possa dire che proveniamo dalla città di Slagelse, i nostri membri si trovano in tutta la Danimarca da Copenaghen a Fredericia. La band si è formata nel 2019 quando Danni Jelsgaard (batteria) e Rikke K. Johansen (tastiere, whistle e cornamuse) hanno deciso di mettersi insieme e forse provare a colmare un vuoto sulla scena musicale danese lasciato in parte dallo scioglimento della band Huldre e in parte da alcune digressioni di altre band dalla parte più folk del genere metal. J. Asdgaard (voce), Gustav Solberg (chitarra), Line Burglin (voce), Morten Lau (basso) ed infine Tor Hansen (chitarra) furono ingaggiati e così il viaggio iniziò. Ciò che i membri hanno in comune è, prima di tutto, l’amore per la musica e il desiderio di fornire alla scena danese un po’ di metal con un atteggiamento sprezzante e in danese.

Prima di questo EP avete pubblicato due singoli, ne volete parlare?

È vero che abbiamo pubblicato due singoli, anche se il secondo è stato pubblicizzato come una premessa all’uscita di MXIII, e quindi compare anche sull’EP. Il nostro primo singolo, Valborgsnat/Walpurgis’ Night è del 2019 e rappresenta sicuramente l’inizio della band in termini di composizione e scrittura. Tutti erano coinvolti nella scrittura o nell’arrangiamento della musica, e da allora è stato il modo in cui lo facciamo.

MXIII è un EP di tre brani: presentatelo ai lettori di Mister Folk e raccontateci come avete vissuto questi mesi dopo la pubblicazione.

“MXIII” contiene le tre canzoni Fra Fremmed Kyst (03:39). Den Farlige Færd (05:23) e Gæstebudet (07:14), che raccontano ognuna una storia di coraggio, onore, oppressione, dei, re e ancelle… Insomma le cose che un vichingo potrebbe sognare alla vigilia della battaglia. Fra Fremmed Kyst (“From Strange Shores”) è una storia di disperazione, di mettere tutto in gioco per l’obiettivo comune e di ciò che potrebbe accadere se tenti il destino una volta di troppo. Den Farefulde Færd (“The Dangerous Journey”) è la storia dal titolo dell’EP, che racconta del re danese Svend Forkbeard, la cui forza e coraggio lo aiutarono a conquistare l’Inghilterra, ma i cui figli videro la propria ambizione e gelosia porre fine ai sogni del padre. Infine Gæstebudet (“La Festa”) racconta l’antica storia di uno dei tanti volti della guerra; l’incontro tra un soldato e una giovane donna che non finisce bene per nessuno dei due.

Di cosa trattano i vostri testi?

Saldamente radicati nella terra dei loro antenati, i Vansind suonano per la battaglia, danze a catena e l’innalzamento dei corni mentre le melodie folk incontrano il metallo solido e il vibrante mix di ringhi brutali e canto femminile. I temi dei testi sono tratti da antiche superstizioni e mitologia scandinava, nonché dalla tradizione della storia, e si combinano con la musica per formare un insieme festoso e cupo. Dove il luccichio negli occhi incontra il luccichio dell’acciaio esiste Vansind, e se ti unisci alla danza potresti intravedere il Valhalla stesso. In termini di materiale narrativo, il danese (e la tradizione scandinava) è assolutamente pieno di grandi racconti, e la storia scandinava è piena di saghe, faide e superstizioni, che creano testi epici e tuttavia ancora riconoscibili.

MXIII rimarrà in digitale o ci sono possibilità che venga stampato in formato fisico?

Al momento rimarrà in formato digitale, anche perché stiamo lavorando per registrare qualche altra canzone in un futuro non troppo lontano. Stiamo considerando di rendere disponibile anche una versione su CD, anche se nulla è deciso a questo punto.

Mi è piaciuta veramente molto l’alternanza delle voci, sicuramente un vostro punto di forza. Avete avuto difficoltà a trovare questo equilibrio o è stata una cosa spontanea e semplice?

Il mix delle voci era una chiara visione sin dall’inizio, avendo l’opportunità di avere entrambe le estremità dello spettro vocale, è un ottimo modo per evolvere sia la musica che la narrazione, e osiamo dire che siamo soddisfatti del modo in cui sta andando per noi finora.

La scena danese conta pochi gruppi ma tutti molto talentuosi. Vi sentite parte della scena e ci sono delle band con le quali andate maggiormente d’accordo?

La nostra scena musicale nazionale è stata molto dormiente negli ultimi 18 mesi circa, alla luce dell’epidemia covid. Perciò non abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di lavorare e di fare concerti con molte altre band, anche se le cose stanno andando molto bene su questo fronte e finora abbiamo prenotato per una mezza dozzina di lavori questo autunno. Sembra che siamo stati ben accolti dagli ascoltatori, e siamo molto ansiosi di mostrare la nostra musica dal vivo sul palco con alcuni buoni amici come i ragazzi e le ragazze di Svartsot, Aettir, Vanir e altri.

In alcuni momenti ho sentito degli echi degli Svartsot, forse per via del connubio voce growl/tin whistle. Sono una vostra influenza? Quali sono i gruppi che sentite più vicini?

Si potrebbe dire che gli Svartsot sono un’influenza, ma in termini di composizione e stile stiamo cercando di rivendicare il nostro interesse e di non copiare troppo da nessuno. Detto questo, siamo chiaramente influenzati dalle band che abbiamo ascoltato nel corso degli anni, ma questa è una vasta gamma di influenze considerando le varie età dei membri della band (abbiamo tra i 23 e i 44 anni), quindi per indicare una singola band come influenza principale sarebbe troppo semplicistico.

Immagino stiate già lavorando alle nuove canzoni: potete dirci qualcosa? Quali saranno i prossimi passi della band?

Stiamo infatti finendo un po’ di nuove canzoni e speriamo di rilasciare un altro EP verso ottobre o novembre, e stiamo anche programmando di iniziare a scrivere del materiale per ciò che diventerà un full-length, che registreremo prima o poi in primavera. Nel frattempo stiamo lentamente riempiendo il nostro calendario con concerti, una cosa che ci è mancata tantissimo nell’ultimo anno e mezzo, quindi speriamo di vedervi in tournée il prossimo anno e, con un po’ di fortuna, di avere un album pronto per voi la prossima estate!

I think this is your first Italian interview, so let’s start with your story.

The band Vansind is a septet, and though we can be said to be from the town of Slagelse, our members are located across Denmark from Copenhagen to Fredericia. The band began in 2019 when Danni Jelsgaard (drums) and Rikke K. Johansen (keys, whistles, bag pipes) decided to get together and maybe try and fill a void on the Danish music scene left in part by the dissolution of the band Huldre and in part by certain other bands digression from the more folksy part of the metal genre. Recruited were J. Asdgaard (vocals), Gustav Solberg (guitar), Line Burglin (vocals), Morten Lau (bass) and finally Thor Hansen (guitar) and thus the journey began. What the members have in common is, first and foremost, a love for music and the desire to provide the Danish scene with some devil-may-care, dansable and Danish metal.

Before this EP you published two singles: would you like to talk about that?

It’s true we published two singles, although the second one was publicized as a build up to the release of MXIII, and so also features on the EP. Our first single, Valborgsnat/Walpurgis’ Night is from 2019 and certainly represents the beginning of the band in terms of composing and writing. Everyone was involved in the writing or arranging of the music, and that’s been the way we do it since then.

MXIII is an EP of three songs: present it to the readers of Mister Folk and tell us how you have lived these months after its publication.

MXIII contains the three songs Fra Fremmed Kyst (03:39), Den Farlige Færd (05:23) and Gæstebudet (07:14), that each tell a story of courage, honour, oppression, gods, kings and maids.. in short of the things a viking might dream of on the eve of battle. Fra Fremmed Kyst (“From Strange Shores”) is a tale of desperation and of putting everything on the line for the common goal, and of what may happen if you tempt the Fates once too often. Den Farefulde Færd (“The Dangerous Journey”) is the story from the title of the EP, telling of the Danish King Svend Forkbeard, whose strength and courage helped him conquer England, but whose sons saw their own ambition and jealousy end their father’s dreams. Finally Gæstebudet (“The Feast”) tells the old story of one of the many faces of war; the meeting between a soldier and a young woman that doesn’t end well for either of them.

What are your lyrics about? What are you most inspired by for your lyrics? Is Danish folklore full of legends to be inspired by?

Firmly rooted in the soil of their ancestors Vansind play for battle, chain dances and the raising of horns as folkish melodies meet solid metal and the vibrant mix of brutal growls and female singing. The lyrical themes are harvested from ancient superstitions and Scandinavian mythology as well as the lore of history, and combines with the music to shape a whole that is both festive and somber. Where the glint on the eye meets the glint of steel Vansind exists, and if you join in the dance you may just catch a glimpse of Valhal itself. In terms of story material Danish (and Scandinavian lore) is absolutely rife with great tales, and Scandinavian history is full of sagas, feuds and superstitions, making for epic and yet still relatable lyrics.

Will MXIII remain digital or are there chances that it will be printed in physical format?

At the moment it will remain digital, not in the least because we’re working towards recording a few more songs in the not-too-distant future. We are considering making at least a CD-version available too, though nothing is decided at this point.

I enjoyed the alternation of the two voices, this is one of your strong points. Did you have difficulty finding this balance or was it spontaneous and simple?

The mix of vocals was a clear vision from the beginning, having the opportunity to call on both ends of the vocal spectrum is a great way to evolve both the music and the storytelling, and we dare say we’re pleased with the way it’s working out for us so far.

The Danish scene has a few but very talented groups. Do you feel part of that scene and are there any bands you get along better with?

Our national music scene has been very much dormant during the last 18 months or so, in light of the Covid-epidemic. Thus we haven’t had the opportunity to works and gig with many other bands, although things are very much looking up on this front and we’re booked for half a dozen jobs this fall so far. It seems we’ve been well received by the listeners though, and we’re very eager to showcase our music live on stage with a few good friends such as the guys and girls of Svartsot, Aettir, Vanir and others.

In some moments I heard some echoes from Svartsot, maybe for the union of growl and tin whistle. Are they one of your influence? Which group do you feel closest to?

You might say that Svartsot are an influence, but in terms of composition and style we’re very much trying to claim our own stake and not copy too much from anyone. That being said we’re clearly influenced by the bands we’ve listened to over the years, but that is a broad array of influences considering the various ages of band members (we’re between 23 and 44 years of age), so to point out a single band as main influence would be far too simplistic.

I suppose you’re working on some new songs: can you tell us something about that? What will the next steps of the band be?

We are indeed finishing up a few new songs  and hope to release another EP come October or November, and are also planning to start writing material for what will become a full-length album, that we will be recording sometime next spring. In the meantime we’re slowly filling up our calendar with gigs, a thing that we’ve been missing so, so much over the last year and a half, so we hope we’ll be seeing some of you on the road over the next year and, with a bit of luck, have an album ready for you next summer!
