Intervista: Ereb Altor

Gli Ereb Altor sono da sempre i benvenuti su Mister Folk: musicalmente colpiscono sempre nel segno e senza grandi proclami sono diventati una certezza nella scena del metal estremo. Inoltre nell’archivio del sito trovate ben cinque dischi recensiti e un’intervista risalente al 2013, periodo Fire Meets Ice. Troppo tempo senza scambiare due chiacchiere con il leader Mats, voce e chitarra della formazione svedese che da poco ha dato alle stampe l’ennesimo bel lavoro di viking metal.

Con Järtecken proseguite quanto di buono già fatto in Ulfven e nei dischi precedenti. Il vostro stile è subito riconoscibile e il mix tra black metal e viking epico è sempre all’altezza delle aspettative. Credi di aver trovato la via definitiva degli Ereb Altor o il futuro può riservare delle sorprese?

Sono abbastanza sicuro che avremo delle sorprese in futuro, ma non posso dire per certo quando e come. Scriverò il nuovo album su una lavagna pulita come faccio di solito e vedremo dove mi prenderà l’ispirazione. Mi piace ancora mischiare due stili ma forse ci sono altri ingredienti che possono elevare il nostro sound ad un altro livello.

Per la prima volte un vostro disco gode della confezione wooden box: io l’ho acquistata e devo dire che è molto bella. Siete soddisfatti delle versioni limitate prodotte dalla Hammerheart?

Personalmente volevo aggiungere molti più contenuti speciali nel box ma questo box è bello e sta vendendo abbastanza bene quindi penso che faremo box più lussuosi per il prossimo album.

Parlando dell’Hammerheart mi sembra che l’etichetta creda molto in voi e vi promuova in maniera convinta. Come vi state trovando con loro? Anche il prossimo lavora avrà il marchio Hammerheart Records o è troppo presto per dirlo?

Le cose stanno andando bene con la Hammerheart Records e non ci sono divisioni tra di noi. Tuttavia Järtecken è appena uscito ed è molto presto per dire qualcosa di sicuro a questo punto, il futuro è sempre impossibile da predire.

I vostri bridge/chorus sono sempre accattivanti e maledettamente ben fatti, che si tratti di un brano black metal o di uno epico cambia poco. Quanta attenzione date a questa parte della canzone e, allargando il discorso, quale credi che sia il ritornello più bello che hai mai ascoltato?

Grazie! Metto molta attenzione nel fare questo così come nel resto, cerco davvero di prendermi il mio tempo e non lasciare nulla al caso. Anche Tord ha affrontato tutte le composizioni nella fase di produzione con la sua grande competenza musicale e abbiamo discusso di tutto e provato varie cose durante tutto il processo di costruzione di Järtecken. Il ritornello più bello… dipende dall’umore e cambia sempre, mi piace molto il ritornello di New Born dei Muse oppure di Travel dei The Gathering, per citarne alcuni.

Una delle bonus track è Sacrifice dei Bathory. L’avete inserita perché per motivi di spazio non entrava nel vinile Blot-Ilt-Taut?

No, non ha niente a che vedere con l’album tributo, questa volta abbiamo semplicemente deciso di mettere delle canzoni live come bonus track dal momento che non lo avevamo mai fatto prima. Non abbiamo una larga scelta di registrazioni live perciò dovevamo sceglierne alcune dove la qualità audio fosse accettabile ed è capitato che fosse dal nostro show in Ucraina al festival di Oskorei e le canzoni che avevamo erano queste due.

Alcune parti dei testi sono in svedese e la maggior parte è in inglese. Ho letto diversi pareri di persone che preferirebbero ascoltarvi solo in lingua madre, mentre io devo dire che l’alternare mi affascina e che entrambe le lingue stanno bene con la vostra musica. In che modo decidete quale lingua utilizzare nelle varie canzoni?

Sono andato semplicemente con i miei sentimenti di pancia su quale lingua vada meglio. Sono abituato a scrivere in inglese ma da quando ho iniziato a scrivere in svedese è semplicemente diventato più facile, oggigiorno preferisco scrivere in svedese, cerco anche di scrivere in uno stile di svedese arcaico, con spelling più vecchio e con parole quasi dimenticate, è facile essere poetici anche nella tua lingua madre.

Proprio per via dello svedese non conosco il significato dei testi di Avgudadyrkans Väg e della bonus track Av Blod är Jag Kommen: di cosa parlano queste due canzoni?

Le prime cinque canzoni sono collegate insieme e sono il tema principale dell’album. Le altre canzoni sono storie separate. Il tema è ispirato da una storia vera del XVII secolo nella quale un uomo in Svezia fu condannato a morte per aver “interagito sessualmente” e fatto un patto con una “Skogsrå” (una specie di ninfa della foresta), una vecchia creatura del folklore svedese che è un tutt’uno con la natura ed ha poteri magici, ma secondo la chiesa queste creature erano in combutta con il diavolo o a volte erano il diavolo stesso. Ho letto questo testo su diversi libri di corte e su altro materiale su questo processo e ho iniziato a scrivere un testo romanzato sul tema. Avgudadyrkans Väg è ovviamente la prima parte di questa storia ed è quando lui inizia a sognare di evocare e svegliare la “Skogsrå”. Av Blod är Jag Kommen è la versione live di questa canzone precedentemente rilasciata su Ulfven. È la storia del non abbandono dei vecchi Dèi nordici per il cristianesimo.

Parliamo della copertina: la trovo fantastica e immerge immediatamente l’ascoltatore nell’atmosfera cupa dell’album. Possiamo considerare la copertina di Järtecken come la porta d’ingresso per la vostra musica?

Sì, puoi, ha una certa “vibrazione nordica” con essa con molto del nostro simbolismo del folklore scandinavo.

Per la copertina vi siete rivolti a un guru come Necrolord. Avevate in mente il suo stile mentre pensavate alla copertina del disco? Cercavate un impatto diverso rispetto allo stile di Mattias Frisk che si è occupato di Nattramn e Ulfven? Mi piacerebbe sapere come si è svolta la collaborazione con Kristian Wåhlin, se gli avete fatto ascoltare delle canzoni o se si è basato sui testi o semplicemente ha seguito alcune vostre indicazioni.

Avere una cover fatta da Kristian Wåhlin è un onore, è come se fosse una cosa da fare prima di morire per me. Sono un fan dei suoi lavori e Kristian riceve molte offerte ma tende a fare solo quelle che vuole fare. Sapevo che avrebbe catturato perfettamente la nostra atmosfera su tela, ma per essere onesti non avrei mai pensato che avrebbe risposto quando gli mandai la mail. Poche ore dopo la mia mail mi ha chiamato ed è venuto fuori che a lui piacciono molto gli Ereb Altor e che ha tutti i nostri album, immagina l’eccitazione e sono veramente contento del risultato. Gli ho spiegato i concept dei testi dell’album e gli ho dato semplicemente carta bianca per fare qualunque cosa gli riesca meglio.

Vi ho visto in concerto quando siete passati a Roma con Borknagar e Mänegarm, fu un grande show! Avete appena concluso un tour che vedeva te e Ragnar doppiamente impegnati con Ereb Altor e Isole: è stata dura suonare due set ogni sera e come giudichi l’esperienza? C’è speranza di vedervi in Italia e magari a Roma nel corso del 2020?

È sempre difficile e stancante fare due concerti tutte le sere. Lo avevamo già fatto prima, quindi sapevamo in cosa ci stavamo cacciando. Sta tutto nel come ti prepari fisicamente e mentalmente per un lavoro come questo. Ci siamo trovati benissimo durante questo tour e tutti, artisti, autisti e tour manager sono andati molto d’accordo. Non si può mai sapere, il tempo ci dirà se visiteremo l’Italia e Roma nel 2020.

Qual è la A Fine Day To Die degli Ereb Altor? E perché?

Per me A Fine Day To Die quasi non è la migliore canzone di Bathory, ma se ti stai riferendo alla mia canzone preferita degli Ereb Altor ti direi che ogni canzone ha un significato diverso e sono state scritte in momenti diversi della mia vita quindi è difficile scegliere. Ti posso citare Myrding dai vecchi tempi, Bloodline, la canzone più epica di Ulfven e ora forse With Fire In My Heart è la mia favorita.

Grazie Mats per la disponibilità e per la grande musica che realizzate ad ogni album: vuoi dire qualcosa ai fan italiani degli Ereb Altor?

Grazie! Se tutto va bene avremo la possibilità di incontrare presto i nostri fan italiani, sarebbe veramente bello suonare a qualsiasi festival italiano! Hail the Hordes!

With Järtecken you carry on with the good things that you’ve done with Ulfven and in your previous CDs. Your style it’s recognizable and the mix between black and epic viking is always up to the expectation. Do you believe that you found the definitive path for Ereb Altor or there’ll be some surprises in the future?

I am pretty sure we will have some surprises in the future but I can’t say for sure how and when. I will write next album from a clean slate as I usually do and we will see where the inspiration will take me. I still do like to mix these two styles but perhaps there are other ingredients that can elevate our sound to another level.

For the first time your CD has the wooden box package: I’ve bought it and I must say that it’s very beautiful. Are you satisfied of the limited edition produced by Hammerheart?

Personally I wanted to add more special items in the box but the box is cool and it has been selling really well so I think we will make a more luxurious box for the next album.

Speaking of Hammerheart, it seems to me that your label believes a lot in you and they promotes you in a very convincing way. How are you getting along with them? Will the next album be under the sign of Hammerheart Records or it’s too soon for that news?

Things have been working fine with Hammerheart Records and there are no fractions thus far. Still Järtecken has just been released and it’s way too early to say anything for sure at this point, the future is always impossible to predict.

Your bridge/chorus are always catchy and well done, whether it’s a black metal song or an epic one, it changes a little. How much attention did you give to this part of the song and, broadening the discussion, what is, in your opinion, the most beautiful refrain you’ve ever heard?

Thanks! I put a lot of attention to this as well as everything else, I really tried to take my time and leave nothing to chance. Tord also went through all compositions in the production phase with his great musical know-how and we discussed everything and tried out stuff during the whole process of building Järtecken. Most beautiful refrain… well, that’s a very hard question… depends on moods and it changes all the time, I really like the refrain of the song New Born by Muse or Travel by The Gathering to mention a few.

One of the bonuses track it’s Sacrifice of Bathory. Did you insert in this album because of the lack of space in the vinyl Blot-Ilt-Taut?

No, it has nothing to do with the tribute album, we simply decided to put some live songs as bonus tracks this time since we never have done that before. We don’t have a vast number of live recordings therefore we had to pick some where the audio quality was acceptable and it happened to be from our show in Ukraine at Oskorei festival and the songs we had from that show was these two.

Some parts of the lyrics are in Swedish and most of them are in English. I’ve rad that some people would like to hear you only in Swedish, whereas I must say that this alternation fascinates me and the lyrics of both languages are perfect with your music. How do you decide which language to use in the various songs?

I just go with my gut feeling which language will fit the best. I am more used to write lyrics in English but since I started to write in Swedish it’s just get easier and easier, nowadays I kind of prefer to write in Swedish, I also try to use an older style of Swedish with older spellings and words almost forgotten, it’s easier to be poetic in your mother tongue as well.

Precisely because of Swedish I don’t understand the meaning of Avgudadyrkans Väg and of the bonus track Av Blod är Jag Kommen: what are the lyrics of these two songs about?

The five first songs are linked together and these songs are the theme of the album. The other songs are separate stories. The theme is inspired by a true story from the 17th century where a man in Sweden got sentenced to death for interacting sexually and making a pact with a “Skogsrå“ (like a forest nymph) an old creature in Swedish folklore which is one with the nature and has magical powers but according to the church these kind of creatures were in league with the devil or sometimes were the devil himself in another shape. I read texts from old court books and other material from this trial and started to form a fictional lyrical theme based on this story. Avgudadyrkans Väg is obviously the first part in this story and it’s when he starts to dream about summoning and wake up the “Skogsrå” Av Blod är Jag Kommen is a live version of this previously released song on Ulfven. It’s a story about not abandoning the old Norse Gods for Christianity.

Speaking of the cover: I find it fantastic and immediately immerses the listener in the dark atmosphere of the album. Can we consider the cover of Järtecken as the front door for your music?

Yes, you can, it has a certain Nordic vibe to it with lots of symbolism from our Scandinavian folklore.

For the cover you turn to a guru as Necrolord. Did you had his style in your mind while you was thinking at the CD cover? Were you looking for a different impact compared to the style of Mattias Frisk who worked on your last two releases? I would like to know how the collaboration with Kristian Wåhlin took place, whether you made him listen to songs or if it was based on the lyrics or simply followed some of your instructions.

Have a cover made by Kristian Wåhlin is an honour, it’s kind of a bucket list thing for me. I’m a fan of his work and Kristian get a lot of offers but he tends to do only the ones he wants to do. I knew he would capture our atmosphere on canvas perfectly but to be honest I never thought he would even response when I mailed him. A few hours after my mail he phoned me and it turns out he really liked Ereb Altor and had all our albums, imagine the excitement and I’m really pleased with the outcome. I explained the lyrical concept of the album and simply gave him free hands to do whatever he does best.

I’ve seen you live in Rome with Borknagar and Mänegarm, that was a great show! You have barely concluded a tour that saw you and Ragnar doubly engaged with Ereb Altor and Isole: was it hard to play two sets every night and how do you rate the experience? Is there any hope of seeing you in Italy and maybe in Rome during 2020?

It’s always difficult and exhausting doing two sets every night. We have done it before so we knew what we were getting into. It’s all about to prepare yourself physically and mentally for tasks like this. We had a really nice time during this tour and everyone, artists, bus-drivers and tour manager got along very well. You never know, time will tell if we will visit Italy/Rome in 2020.

What is the A Fine Day To Die of Ereb Altor? And why?

For me A Fine Day To Die is not nearly the best song of Bathory, but if you are referring to my favorite Ereb Altor song I would say that each song has a different meaning and were written in different times of my life therefore it’s really hard to point out. I can mention a few like Myrding from the old days, the most epic song Bloodline from Ulfven and right now maybe With Fire In My Heart is my fave.
