Intervista: Ereb Altor

Se seguite il sito sapete benissimo della mia simpatia per la musica degli Ereb Altor, non a caso nell’archivio della ‘zine trovate diverse recensioni dei loro dischi e altre due interviste. La scusa per contattare la band svedese è la pubblicazione dell’EP Eldens Boning, gustoso antipasto del full-length in uscita a fine anno. Viking metal, mitologia nordica, antipazioni del prossimo lavoro e un ricordo non proprio epico del concerto romano tenuto un po’ di anni fa…

Bentornati su Mister Folk! Questa è la nostra terza chiacchierata e ti chiedo come sono andate le cose con Järtecken e date live successive.

Ciao, davvero è la terza volta? Beh, sicuramente porterà fortuna! Tutto è andato nel migliore dei modi con Järtecken, e così anche il tour seguente; le date live sono andate bene, ovviamente finché la pandemia non ha rovinato i nostri piani per la promozione futura dell’album.

Come avete vissuto quest’ultimo anno di pandemia? Avete sfruttato questo tempo per concentrarvi sulla musica?

Poiché non è stato più possibile fare concerti, mi sono auto-isolato nella “cripta” che chiamiamo Studio Apocalypse. In realtà, posso dire di aver iniziato a scrivere brani per un nuovo album già alcuni mesi prima dell’uscita di Järtecken, durante l’attesa per gli ultimi preparativi (layout, mastering ecc.). Ho trascorso innumerevoli ore al lavoro, prima di presentare la preproduzione del mio lavoro agli altri membri degli Ereb Altor. Poiché la pandemia ci ha sopraffatti, non abbiamo avuto molto altro da fare all’infuori di registrare e produrre: tutto ciò si è tradotto in dodici canzoni.

Quando avete deciso di realizzare un EP prima del prossimo full-length? Questi brani troveranno spazio in una prossima pubblicazione o rimarranno solo su Eldens Boning?

Poiché non sono un grande fan degli album troppo “lunghi” (e dodici canzoni degli Ereb Altor lo avrebbero reso tale), abbiamo avuto l’idea di pubblicare alcuni brani su un EP. In altre parole, il prossimo album degli Ereb Altor è stato registrato in contemporanea all’EP, e contiamo di pubblicarlo più avanti, verso la fine del 2021.

Sacrifice 2.0 è “il seguito” di Sacrifice presente su Fire Meets Ice. Vuoi raccontarci come nasce l’idea di questa seconda parte e se c’è una connessione anche a livello di testi?

La versione originale di Sacrifice mi ha tormentato per anni. Quando ho scritto la canzone, avevo una visione ben precisa in mente, ma il risultato finale non ha rispecchiato affatto le mie aspettative. In primis, il tempo era troppo lento e alcune parti del brano erano troppo estese. Ho voluto correggere gli errori commessi in quell’occasione. So che il passato è passato e che forse andrebbe lasciato così com’è, ma per una volta ho fatto un’eccezione. Avevamo anche bisogno di un brano in più per l’EP, e il ritornello di Sacrifice, a mio avviso, è uno dei migliori momenti del nostro repertorio.

La copertina è molto suggestiva e minacciosa, davvero bella! Ha un qualche legame con le tematiche trattate nelle canzoni?

Sì, è l’interpretazione che Christine Linde ha voluto dare alla storia che si cela dietro la title track. Si ispira alla storia di un vecchio re svedese vissuto nel VII secolo. Era un uomo spietato, e si diceva che da ragazzo avesse mangiato il cuore di un lupo. Quando suo padre morì, invitò i sovrani dei sei regni limitrofi a un banchetto in sua memoria. Attese che gli altri re si ubriacassero, li imprigionò e incendiò l’intera dimora; poi, si impossessò delle loro terre. Sull’immagine di copertina si possono vedere i fantasmi dei sei re e il fuoco che li ha uccisi.

Questa è la vostra terza release disponibile unicamente su vinile dopo The Lake Of Blood e Blot-Ilt-Taut. Volete creare qualcosa di “unico” rivolto solamente ai fan più fedeli?

Questi tre lavori sono un po’speciali. Non considero Blot-Ilt-Taut come un vero album degli Ereb Altor, visto che si tratta di una raccolta di cover dei Bathory. L’idea di una release in vinile ci venne dalla nostra vecchia etichetta, la Cyclone Empire, e ci trovammo d’accordo, dato che non si tratta di un nostro “vero” lavoro. L’EP Eldens Boning è una sorta di anteprima del nostro prossimo full-length. Dato che si compone di soli quattro brani, abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato bello pubblicarlo solo in vinile: una versione rara, una chicca per i collezionisti. In ogni caso, le nostre canzoni sono sempre disponibili sulle piattaforme di streaming, e naturalmente possono essere scaricate in alta qualità sulla nostra pagina Bandcamp.

A quando il successore di Järtecken? Nella precedente intervista hai detto che in futuro ci sarebbero stati box “lussuosi”, mi puoi anticipare qualcosa?

Poco fa ti ho accennato a una pubblicazione verso la fine del 2021. Potrebbero esserci molte altre cose interessanti, ma per il momento non posso dirti nulla a riguardo.

Quanto è importante a livello personale la mitologia norrena? La reputate un ottimo argomento per le canzoni o c’è qualcosa di più profondo e spirituale?

Sono davvero interessato alla nostra storia e, ovviamente, al nostro patrimonio culturale. La mitologia norrena è parte di tutto ciò e la trovo molto affascinante, ma non direi di avere un legame spirituale con essa. Gli Ereb Altor si confrontano anche con altri miti, leggende ed eventi storici propri della Scandinavia, al di là della mitologia norrena.

Ricordo con piacere il vostro show a Roma in compagnia di Borknagar e Mänegarm. Ricordi qualcosa di quella serata (QUI il live report) e hai aneddoti legati ai concerti in terra italiana?

Ricordo carcasse di automobili fuori dal locale, haha. Beh, è difficile ricordare nello specifico i singoli live nei club, li mescolo sempre l’uno con l’altro. Credo che la Rock’n’Roll Arena, da qualche parte vicino Milano, sia stato uno dei migliori locali in cui abbiamo suonato durante quel tour, anche se perdemmo una ruota del rimorchio posteriore del tourbus, e dopo il concerto Jens dei Borknagar impiegò un’ora a ripararlo.

In Italia ci sono due one-man band che partono dal viking dei Bathory per metterci del proprio, mi riferisco a Bloodshed Walhalla e Apocalypse. Hai ascoltato qualcosa di loro? I tuoi ascolti di questo periodo?

No, mi spiace, non li conosco, ma li ascolterò un giorno. Al momento sto ascoltando la preproduzione del nuovo album degli Isole, hahaha… a parte questo, sto ascoltando i miei tre album preferiti del 2020, Garmarna, Sorcerer e Katatonia.

Lo spero anch’io, questa dannata pandemia finirà presto. Abbiamo in programma di partecipare a due festival in Italia, più in là durante l’anno (il 23 luglio al Camunia Sonora e il 19 agosto in Abruzzo al Frantic Fest, il primo ha visto la cancellazione dei gruppi inglesi e scandinavi, il secondo è stato direttamente rimandato al 2022, ndMF). Ovviamente, se la pandemia ce lo consentirà.

Welcome back to Mister Folk! This is our third chat! First of all, I would like to ask you how things played out with your eighth album, Järtecken, and the following live shows.

Hi, really? Well third time is a charm. Everything turned out nicely with Järtecken and the following tour and live shows were good then the pandemic obviously ruined our plans to support the album further.

How did you deal with the pandemic situation, during the last year? Did you take advantage of this time to focus and work on some new music?

Yes, since live shows no longer was possible I isolated myself in the crypt we call Studio Apocalypse. Actually I think I started writing songs for a new album a few months before Järtecken was released while waiting for the final preparations (layout, mastering and such). I spent countless hours of work before I even presented my work with a pre-productional recording to the others in Ereb Altor. And since the pandemic came over us we didn’t have much else to do but to record/produce everything and it resulted in twelve songs.

When did you choose to release an EP, before starting to work on a new full-length album? Are you going to include those tracks also in it, or are you thinking about keeping them exclusively for Elders Boning?

Since I’m not a super fan of really long albums (twelve Ereb Altor songs would be a quite long album) the idea of releasing some songs on an EP came to us. In other words, the next Ereb Altor is already recorded at the same point as the EP and we are aiming at a late release in 2021.

Sacrifice 2.0 is the “sequel” of Sacrifice which is included in Fire Meets Ice. Would you like to tell us the idea behind this choice? Is there a connection between the lyrics of both tracks?

The original version of Sacrifice has been disturbing me for years. When I wrote the song I had a vision and the result didn’t really add up with the expectaions I had. First of all the tempo was too slow and there were parts of the song that were too extensive. I wanted to correct the mistakes I did back then. I know the past is the past and maybe it should stay that way but for once I made an exception. We also needed one more song for the EP and the chorus in Sacrifice is to me one of the finest moments in our catalogue.

The cover looks evocative and “threatening”, it is amazing! Is there a relationship with the themes of your songs?

Yes, its Christine Linde’s interpretation of the story behind the title track. Its inspired by an old King in Sweden during the 7th century. He was a ruthless man and there was a rumour he ate the heart of a wolf when he was a kid. When his father died he invited the surrounding six kings to a feast in his father’s memory. When the kings got drunk he locked them inside and burned the house down to the ground with the kings inside. Then he seized their lands. On the front cover you can see the ghosts of the six kings and the fire.

This is your third release available only as a vinyl version, after The Lake Of Blood and Blot-Ilt-Taut. Did you want to create something unique and exclusive, for your biggest fans?

These three releases are a bit special. I still dont consider Blot-Ilt-Taut being a real Ereb Altor record since all of the songs are Bathory covers. The idea of a vinyl release only back then came from our old label Cyclone Empire and we were fine with the idea since it’s not a real EA album. The EP Eldens Boning is kind of a preview of the next full lenght album. Since it’s only four songs we thought it was kind of cool making at a rare release on vinyl only. A collector’s gem. Still the songs will be available on streaming platforms and of course it will also be available on our bandcamp as high quality downloads.

When will you release Järtecken’s successor? In our previous interview, you revealed that some luxury box sets would have been planned for the future: would you like to tell me something more about that?

We are like I mentioned earlier aiming for a release in late 2021. There might be more interesting things happening this year but I cant tell you anything at the moment.

How much is Norse mythology important, on a personal level? Do you consider it as the main theme of your songs? Do you have a spiritual bond with it?

I am very interested in our history and then of course our inheritance. Norse mythology is a part of that and I find it intriguing but I wouldnt say I have a spiritual bond with it. Ereb Altor also deals with other myths, legends and historic events from Scandinavia besides Norse mythology.

I remember with pleasure your show in Rome, with Borknagar and Mänegarm. Do you remember something of that night? Do you have some stories related to your gigs in Italy?

I remember car wrecks on the field outside the venue, hahaha… Well, its hard to remember any specifics about club shows, I always mix them up with each other. Rock’n’Roll arena in some city near Milano I think was one of the best club shows we have played it was on that same tour, although we lost a wheel on the trailer behind the nightliner and Jens from Borknagar spent an hour beneath the trailer repairing something after the show.

Two Italian one-man bands draw inspiration from Bathory’s Viking style, adding a personal touch: I refer to Bloodshed Valhalla and Apocalypse. Have you heard about them, or listened to some of their works? What are you listening to at this moment?

No, sorry I havent heard them. I will have to check them out some day. Right now I am listening to the pre-production of the next Isole album, hahaha…. Other than that I listen a lot to my three favourite albums of 2020, Garmarna, Sorcerer and Katatonia.

I hope so too, hopefully this damned pandemic will end soon. We are scheduled to do two festivals in Italy later these year. If the pandemic will let us of course.
