Intervista: Ereb Altor

Forti di un nuovo disco uscito per la storica Hammerheart Records, gli svedesi Ereb Altor torneranno a breve in Italia per un’unica data che li vedrà headliner della quinta edizione del Mister Folk Festival. Ho parlato con Mats dell’album Hälsingemörker e dei suoi segreti, dei tributi ai Bathory, di come è cambiato nel corso degli anni il fare musica, ma anche di chitarre e amplificatori. Ci si vede venerdì 12 giugno al Traffic Live di Roma per goderci la musica di cinque gruppi diversi stilisticamente ma che in un modo o nell’altro hanno a che fare con il mondo del folk.

UN GRANDE RINGRAZIAMENTO A CHIARA COPPOLA PER LA TRADUZIONE DELL’INTERVISTA

Ciao Mats, ci siamo incontrati nel 2013 a Roma in occasione del Niflheim Festival: quali ricordi hai di quella serata?

Se ricordo bene il Festival di Niflheim era in Germania e non in Italia. Sono passati circa 13 anni e da allora sono successe un sacco di cose e alla fine tutto si mescola in modo confuso. Penso che abbiamo suonato a Roma intorno al 2014 come parte di un tour che abbiamo fatto con Borknagar e Månegarm tra gli altri e quello è stato il primo tour più grande dei Nightliner (tour bus attrezzati con cuccette, bagno, area relax ecc. che utilizzano le band per spostarsi tra una data e l’altra, ndMF) che abbiamo fatto e ho ricordi molto belli di quel tour e abbiamo imparato molto e conosciamo alcune persone davvero fantastiche che sono diventate nostre buone amiche. [In realtà il Niflheim Festival è passato a Roma a inizio 2014, il bill comprendeva Borknagar, Månegarm, In Vain, Ereb Altor e Shade Empire, ndMF]

A breve tornerete a Roma in veste di headliner del Mister Folk Festival: cosa vi aspettate da questo concerto?

È molto difficile sapere cosa aspettarsi dai festival più piccoli. A volte è molto intenso e i locali sono affollati e spero davvero che sarà così al Mister Folk Festival. È passato un bel po’ di tempo dall’ultima volta che abbiamo visitato Roma e non vediamo l’ora di divertirci davvero e incontrare anche alcuni vecchi amici.

Hälsingemörker è di inizio 2025. Passato ormai un anno e mezzo, come vedete quell’album? Sei completamente soddisfatto di come è uscito?

A mio parere è l’album migliore e più soddisfacente che abbiamo realizzato finora e cerco sempre di non avere alcun rimpianto perché ogni album rappresenta un periodo specifico ed è come un segno di dove si trovavano gli Ereb Altor in quel periodo. Ogni album ha qualche difetto se lo si guarda retrospettivamente, ma questa è una mia percezione.

Lo ritieni il miglior disco della band? Considerando il consistente numero di album pubblicati, quali sono i tuoi tre preferiti e per quale motivo?

Come ho detto prima, sì, è il miglior album! Cattura esattamente l’atmosfera che avevamo nella nostra visione, è un album più melodico, epico e folk, ma ha comunque un tocco aspro e molta oscurità. Devo menzionare anche Ulfven, che è uno dei miei album preferiti. Il percorso e la direzione in cui, a mio parere, abbiamo trovato il nostro sound unico sono stati fondati su questo album. Ci sono alcune canzoni che mi colpiscono particolarmente, come Bloodline e En Synd Svart Som Sot. Per me spicca anche Järtecken con una storia più lunga e due canzoni davvero epiche: With Fire In My Heart e Queen Of All Seas. Direi che nel complesso è un album un po’ più duro.

Parliamo della copertina, molto bella. Fa riferimento ai testi dell’album?

Il titolo Hälsingemörker è tradotto come “L’oscurità di Hälsingland”. Per me l’Hälsingland è una zona molto speciale della Svezia, dove ho le mie radici. È un luogo pieno di folklore, miti, leggende e magia. L’opera d’arte è realizzata da Tómarúm av Christine Linde. È un’artista fantastica originaria dell’Hälsingland e mi è sembrato giusto che realizzasse questa copertina. Ha dentro di sé l’anima dell’Hälsingland, che si riflette sulla sua arte. È l’immagine della “Signora della foresta”, un essere magico del nostro folklore. Un protettore della natura che può anche essere un po’ come un imbroglione, utile e talvolta quasi malvagio.

Cosa pensi dei tributi live ai Bathory che nel corso degli anni suonano in tour o festival? Ti piacerebbe farne parte o in caso di “chiamata” preferiresti concentrarti su Ereb Altor e Isole?

Penso che sia bello che Bathory riceva il meritato riconoscimento e che si renda omaggio a questa leggenda. È una cosa positiva assicurarsi che il ricordo di Bathory non svanisca mai. Non ho visto nessuno spettacolo però, non ancora comunque. Anche gli Ereb Altor lo hanno fatto alcune volte in rare occasioni in passato. Ma la mia attenzione sarà sempre rivolta agli Ereb Altor, a creare la mia musica e così via, e non a fare spettacoli tributo. [Gli Ereb Altor hanno pubblicato nel 2016 il vinile tributo a Bathory Blod-Ilt-Taut, recentemente stampato anche in cd, ndMF]

A inizio carriera la voce degli Ereb Altor era quella di Ragnar, dal terzo disco hai iniziato a cantare anche tu e nelle ultime release sei la voce principale della band. Come mai non cantavi all’inizio? Come è stato questo percorso?

All’epoca ero troppo timido e troppo insicuro per cantare. Anche i primi due album erano solo un progetto divertente che non ci aspettavamo che nessuno ascoltasse. Avevamo semplicemente alcune vecchie canzoni fortemente ispirate all’era vichinga di Bathory con cui non sapevamo davvero cosa fare, quindi le abbiamo registrate per toglierle dal nostro sistema. All’epoca Ragnar era un cantante più esperto ed era naturale che cantasse nei primi due album. Penso che la mia fiducia sia cresciuta nel corso degli anni e mi sono esercitato molto mentre realizzavo le registrazioni di pre-produzione per gli album.

Com’è cambiato “fare musica” da quando avete mosso i primi passi a oggi. Mi riferisco ai social, alla strumentazione digitale, al fatto che bisogna mostrarsi per ricorda che si esiste, alla soglia dell’attenzione che è sempre più corta, ai cd che non si vendono più e tutto il resto. Come ti trovi in questo mondo e preferivi quello di inizio 2000?

Direi che i social media non sono proprio il mio settore migliore, senza esagerare. Vorrei essere più interessato e forse questa è una delle cose su cui dobbiamo effettivamente lavorare. Le vendite dell’album esistono ancora fino a un certo punto all’interno della scena metal, ma forse prima o poi morirà, solo il futuro potrà dirlo. Al giorno d’oggi c’è una grande differenza nelle vendite rispetto a quando abbiamo iniziato. Quando si tratta di fare musica lo faccio più o meno nello stesso modo in cui l’ho sempre fatto. Sì, oggi ho attrezzature migliori, ma la formula e il modo in cui lavoro sono più o meno gli stessi.

Da chitarrista a chitarrista: qual è la tua strumentazione in studio e in concerto? Ti affidi in alcune situazioni al digitale o preferisci il calore delle valvole? Quali sono le tue chitarre preferite?

Utilizzo un Kemper sia sul palco che in studio. Possiedo anche un grande amplificatore a valvole, ma è molto difficile portarlo con me ai concerti: è un Peavey Triple X modificato e un cabinet Marshall 1960A 4×12 e lo tengo in sala prove. Al giorno d’oggi sul palco utilizzo chitarre Solar con il bridge Evertune, che mi aiuta a concentrarmi maggiormente sui miei “doveri” da frontman. A casa e in studio suono con le mie chitarre Gibson Les Paul e Fender Stratocaster, oltre che con le mie Solar. Quando si tratta della mia chitarra preferita dipende da cosa la uso, ad esempio faccio tutto il solista sulla mia Fender e suono tutti i miei spettacoli con Solar.

Torniamo al Mister Folk Festival: ti ho chiesto cosa vi aspettate dalla serata, ma noi fan cosa dobbiamo, invece, aspettarci?

Aspettatevi uno spettacolo fatto con il cuore al 100%.

Conosci la musica delle altre band/musicisti che si esibiranno? Linnea, Blodiga Skald, Down Of A Dark Age e Eoghan.

Non li ho ancora ascoltati, ma lo farò prima di volare in Italia.

Domande della traduttrice Chiara: Ciao, congratulazioni per il nuovo album, l’ho davvero apprezzato. La copertina a prima vista mi ha ricordato …And I Return To Nothingness dei Lorna Shore: la domanda è se questa riflette quella che era la tua idea iniziale di artwork.

Abbiamo dato a Christine carta bianca per realizzare la sua immagine e la sua interpretazione della magia dell’Hälsingland. Penso che abbia fatto un lavoro fantastico nel catturare lo spirito dell’Hälsingland.

Hai band underground da raccomandarci (non per forza folk metal)?
Kvaen, Skogen, Wolvennest per citarne alcuni.

Hi Mats, we met in 2013 in Rome for the Niflheim Festival: what memories do you have of that evening?

If I remember correctly the Niflheim Festival was in Germany and not Italy. It’s like 13 years ago and a lot of things have happened since and everything gets mixed in a blur in the end. I think we played in Rome around 2014 though as a part of a tour we did with Borknagar and Månegarm among others and that was the first bigger Nightliner tour we did and I have very fond memories from that tour and we learned a lot and get to know some really awesome people that became good friends of ours. [Actually a gig of Niflheim Festival was play in Rome at the beginning of 2014, the bill included Borknagar, Managarm, In Vain, Ereb Altor e Shade Empire, ndMF]

You’ll be back in Rome soon as you headline the Mister Folk Festival: what do you expect from this concert?

It’s very hard to know what to expect from smaller festivals. Sometimes it’s very intense and the venues are crowded and I truly hope this will be the case on Mister Folk Festival. It’s been quite a while since we visited Rome and we are looking forward to have a really good time and meet some old friends as well.

Hälsingemörker is from early 2025. A year and a half have passed now, how do you see that album? Are you completely satisfied with how it came out?

In my opionion it’s the best and most fulfilled album we have done so far and I always try to have no regrets what so ever because every album represents a specific time and it’s like a mark where Ereb Altor was during the time. Every album has some flaws if you look at it retrospective but I feel.

Do you think it’s the band’s best album? Considering the significant number of albums released, what are your three favorites and why?

As I said previously, yes, it’s the best album! It catches the exact atmosphere we had in our vision, it’s a more melodic, epic and folkish album but it still has the harsh edge and lots of darkness. I also have to mention Ulfven which is one of my personal favourite albums. The path and direction where we found in my opinion our unique sound was founded on this album. It has some songs that sticks out for me, like Bloodline and En Synd Svart Som Sot. Järtecken with a longer story and two really epic songs With Fire In My Heart and Queen Of All Seas also stands out for me. A bit of a more harsh album I would say in whole.

Let’s talk about the cover, very beautiful. Does it refer to the album lyrics? Who did the artwork?

The title, Hälsingemörker is translated The darkness of Hälsingland. Hälsingland is to me a very special area in Sweden where I have my roots. It’s place full of folklore, myths, legends and magic. The artwork is made by Tómarúm av Christine Linde. She is an awesome artist that comes from Hälsingland and it just felt so right that she will make this cover. She has the soul of Hälsingland within her person and it reflects on her art. It’s an image of the “Lady of the forest” a magical being in our folklore. A protector of the nature which also can be a bit like a trickster, both helpful and sometimes almost evil.

What do you think of the live tributes to Bathory who have played tours or festivals over the years? Would you like to be part of it or in case of “a call” would you prefer to focus on Ereb Altor and Isole?

I think it’s nice that Bathory gets well deserved recognition and paying tribute to this legend and make sure that the memory of Bathory never fades it’s a good thing. I haven’t seen any shows though, not yet anyway. Ereb Altor has also done it a few times on rare occasions in the past as well. But my focus will always be on Ereb Altor, make my own music and so on and not playing tribute shows.

At the beginning of the band’s career, Ereb Altor’s voice was Ragnar’s, from the third album you started singing too and in the latest releases you are the band’s main voice. Why didn’t you sing at the beginning? How was this journey?.

I was too shy and too insecure to do vocals back then. The first two albums were just a fun project as well which we didn’t expect anyone to listen to. We simply had some old songs heavily inspired by the Viking era of Bathory that we didn’t really know what to do with so we kind of recorded them to get them out of our system. Ragnar was a more experienced vocalist back then and it was just natural that he would sing on the first two albums. I think my confidence grew during the years and I practiced a lot while making the pre-production recordings for the albums.

How did “making music” changed since you first took your first steps to today? I’m referring to social media, digital equipment, the fact that you have to show yourself to remember that you exist, the increasingly short attention span, CDs that no longer sell, and everything else. How do you find yourself in this world and preferred the one at the beginning of 2000?

I would say that social media is not really my best area without exaggregation. I wish I was more interested and perhaps that is one of the things we actual need to work on. The album sales still exist to some sort of point within the metal scene but perhaps it will die eventually, only future can tell. It’s a big difference with the sales nowadays if you compare to when we started out. When it comes to making music I kind of do it in the same way I have always done. Yes, I do have better equipment today but the formula and the way I work is kind of the same.

Guitarist to guitarist: what’s your studio and concert equipment? Do you rely on digital in some situations or do you prefer the heat of the valves? What are your favorite guitars?

I use a kemper both on stage and in studio. I do own a big tube amp as well but it’s very hard to fly with it to shows, it’s a modified Peayey triple X and a Marshall 1960A 4×12 cab and I have it in the rehearsal room. On stage I use Solar guitars nowadays with the evertune bridge which helps me focus more on my duties as a frontman. At home and in the studio I play on Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster as well as my Solar guitars. When it comes to my favourite guitar it depends on what I use it for, in example I do all the lead on my Fender and I play all my shows with Solar.

Back to the Mister Folk Festival: I asked you what you expect from the evening, but what should we fans expect instead?

Expect us to do a show 100% from the heart. We always goes all in!

Do you know the music of the other bands/musicians who will be performing? Linnea, Blodiga Skald, Dawn of A Dark Age and Eoghan…

I haven’t listened to them yet but I will before we fly to Italy.

We gave Christine free hands to do her image and her interpretation of the magic of Hälsingland. I think she made an awesome job to capture the spirit of Hälsingland.

Do you have any underground bands that you would recommend us (even if they’re not strictly folk metal)?
