Gli svizzeri Caladmor hanno pubblicato sul finire del 2013 il pregevole disco Of Stones And Stars, lavoro che denota la maturità dei musicisti e il buon gusto in fase di songwriting. Babs e Maede hanno risposto alle mie domande… la speranza è quella di vederli presto presto in Italia con il loro folk metal!

Un ringraziamento a Claudia Ithil per la traduzione dell’intervista.
La prima domanda riguarda la decisione di autoprodurvi il disco dopo aver realizzato Midwinter con la Twilight Vertrieb. Cosa vi ha portato a questa scelta?
Babs: la decisione dell’autoproduzione non è stata in effetti presa volontariamente poiché la nostra ex etichetta Twilight Vertrieb era fallita quando noi avevamo già iniziato a lavorare su Of Stones And Stars. Abbiamo voluto pubblicare l’album nonostante ciò, ma non abbiamo trovato un’altra etichetta che soddisfacesse le nostre aspettative, perciò abbiamo prodotto il disco da soli… fortunatamente siamo stati aiutati da Markus Eck di metalmessage.de. Lavorare con lui si è rivelata essere la giusta decisione, decisamente!
Maede: abbiamo fatto un accordo di distribuzione con la Einheit Produktionen, quindi Of Stones And Stars sarà ufficialmente in vendita in Germania e Austria nel Febbraio 2014! 🙂
Sempre più gruppi dopo il primo disco (in alcuni casi anche tre dischi) sotto una label decidono la via dell’autoproduzione. È questo, secondo voi, il futuro dei gruppi underground e medio-piccoli?
Maede: semplicemente ciò avviene soprattutto perché essendo una band piccola non trovi un’etichetta, finché non sei abbastanza famoso e vendi qualche migliaio di copie. Il business della musica si è completamente rovinato negli ultimi anni, la musica è scivolata sempre più nel sottofondo, perché ruota tutto attorno ai soldi. È più importante avere un buon management che un’etichetta, perché il successo dipende tutto dal girare in tour e dal suonare live, questo è anche il modo in cui guadagni soldi come band.
Dal primo album è riscontrabile un certo cambiamento di stile, non nettissimo ma evidente. Ora siete più folk e dinamici, concordate?
Maede: sono d’accordo! 🙂 Penso che abbiamo fatto davvero progressi nel nostro scrivere le canzoni e nelle capacità di composizione. Il nuovo album è più complesso e diversificato.
A mesi di distanza dall’uscita sul mercato siete soddisfatti della reazione da parte di critica e fans?
Maede: anche prima di questa pubblicazione eravamo sicuri che questo album sarebbe stato un successo, perché ci abbiamo lavorato duramente, ma alla fine il feedback ha superato le nostre aspettative. È davvero soddisfacente, da musicista, quando ottieni approvazione per musica innovativa e particolare, ciò non è scontato!
Il singolo scelto è lungo e molto retrò come sound, secondo me una delle migliori composizioni che avete mai fatto. Non temevate, però, che a causa della lunga durata Alvíssmál potesse risultare pesante come videoclip?
Maede: No, affatto! abbiamo voluto realizzare uno di quei bei video antiquati con una storia e degli attori, e non solo la band che suona! Abbiamo anche voluto un video a tema vichingo e Alvissmál era perfetto per questo.
Per i testi avete utilizzato diverse lingue: a chi e come è venuta questa idea?
Babs: non abbiamo deciso “facciamo un album con diverse lingue”, non è stata un’idea predefinita. Le differenze linguistiche nei testi sono venute da canzone a canzone, dunque a Maede è venuta l’idea di fare una canzone tratta dal poema Alvíssmál che è scritto in norreno antico, e cosi ha fatto con il poema Mimirs Born di Agnes Kayser-Langerhannß. Per Laudine’s Lament ho scelto una parte della novella medioevale Iwein scritta in tedesco medio-alto, perché mi piacevano molto le parole.
Parlando di Alvíssmál, perché la scelta di cantare dei versi dell’Edda Poetica? È stato difficile adattare la musica al testo in norreno?
Babs: uno dei principali temi dell’ album Of Stones And Stars è la saggezza. L’Edda Poetica è piena di aneddoti circa la conoscenza e la saggezza e cosi è la storia di Alvíss, quindi abbiamo pensato che andasse alla perfezione. Maede ha scritto la canzone basata su un riff di Nick; per cui non so quanto difficile è stato adattare la musica al testo, ma credo che ci sia riuscito davvero bene.
Come è nata l’idea di utilizzare i versi del poeta del XII secolo Hartmann von Aue?
Babs: come già detto mi piacciono le parole e come sono messe insieme. Ho dovuto leggere il racconto nel mio corso di tedesco medio-alto all’Università. Il passo sul lutto di Laudine per la morte di suo marito mi ha toccato molto e ho capito subito di volerci fare una canzone.
Con A. Kayser-Langerhannß, invece, si arriva all’ ‘800, chi di voi si interessa di letteratura?
Babs: tutti lo siamo! Ci piacciono i poemi di Agnes Kayser-Langerhannß perché offrono un nuovo approccio alla mitologia norrena in un modo davvero artistico.
I tre brani che presentano dei testi poetici e antichi sono al centro del disco e uno dietro l’altro: è un caso oppure è stata una vostra scelta precisa?
Maede: abbiamo scelto l’ordine delle tracce in base ad aspetti musicali e stilistici, niente a che fare direttamente con i testi!
Taberna Trollis è l’unica canzone del cd definibile “allegra” e per questo diversa dalle altre. È un lato della vostra personalità meno conosciuto?
Maede: è una parte davvero importante di noi, se venissi alle prove lo noteresti! La nostra musica, o diciamo i nostri testi e temi, sono alquanto seri, ma è sempre un piacere suonare e questo è sempre allegro, non importa se hai un messaggio serio o se stai solo suonando una drinking song! 🙂
Nel vostro disco suonano diversi ospiti, ma il nome più noto è sicuramente quello di Chrigel Glanzmann, leader degli Eluveitie: come è nata la collaborazione?
Maede: lo conosciamo da un po’ di anni e ho fatto ascoltare a Chrigel la pre-produzione del nuovo album e gli ho chiesto se poteva suonare le cornamuse in esso. Gli è piaciuto molto e ha suonato sulle tracce nel suo studio. 🙂
Le band underground trovano spesso difficoltà nell’organizzare dei veri tour a causa di problemi economici e pratici. Voi come state messi in questo senso, ci sarà modo di vedervi sui palcoscenici europei?
Maede: hai ragione! Per diventare conosciuto, devi pagare un sacco per girare in tour, perché la mentalità del booking è diventata totalmente corrotta negli ultimi anni. In Svizzera è ancora più difficile da band metal, perché non ottieni nessun supporto dal business musicale. Fortunatamente abbiamo trovato in “In Fiction Entertainment” una compagnia davvero forte che ci aiuta ad organizzare date, specialmente in Europa. Già sono confermati il Dark Troll Festival in Germania e il Ragnarök-Spektakel a Eglisau in Svizzera.
Quale è il vostro punto di forza, su disco e live?
Babs: penso si possa sentire nei nostri album che abbiamo lavorato molto nel comporre per rendere le canzoni dinamiche e generare un’atmosfera positiva. Uno dei nostri punti di forza nei live è che mostriamo di divertirti nello stare sul palco e diamo entusiasmo al nostro pubblico.
Cosa faranno i Caladmor nel 2014? Siete al lavoro sul nuovo materiale?
Maede: abbiamo già qualche nuova canzone che verrà eseguita il prossimo anno (l’intervista risale agli ultimi giorni del 2013, nda)! Faremo un sacco di date, ma stiamo lavorando anche su nuove canzoni e su un album imminente.

The first question is about the decision to self-product your album after carrying out Midwinter with Twilight Zone Records. What did you lead to this choice?
Babs: The decision for the self release was not really taken voluntarily as our former label Twilight went bankrupt when we already started working on Of Stones And Stars. But of course we wanted to release the album despite of that but couldn’t find another label suiting our expectations, so we released the album on our own. Luckily we have help for the promotion from Markus Eck from metalmessage.de. To work with him definitely turned out to be the right decision!
Maede: We made a distribution deal with Einheit Produktionen, so Of Stones And Stars we be sold officially in Germany and Austria in February 2014! 🙂
More and more bands after the first CD (sometimes even 3 discs) under a label choose the path of self-production. is this, in your opinion, the future of underground and middle-small bands?
Maede: Mostly it’s because you simple won’t find a label as a small band, until you are quite famous and sold a few thousand copies. Music business has gone totally wasted in the last years, music sliped more and more to the background, it’s all about money. It is more important to have a good management than a label, because success depends all on touring and playing live, this is also the way you earn money as a band.
From the first album we note a little change in style, not very sharp but evident. Now you are more dynamic and folk, do you agree?
Maede: I agree! 🙂 I think we really made progress in our song writing and composing skills. The new album is more complex and divers.
Moths away from the release on the market, are you fain of the reaction of the fans and the critics?
Maede: Even before the release, we were certain, that this album would be a success, because we worked so hard on it, but in the end, the feedback outreached our expectations. It’s very satisfying as a musician, when you get such an acceptance for innovative and special music, that’s not obvious!
The single you chose is long and with a very “retrò” sound, in my opinion one of the best compositions you ever realized. but, didn’t you fear that, due to the big length, Alvíssmál could result weighty as videoclip?
Maede: Not at all! We wanted to make one of those good old-fashioned videos with a story and actors, not only a band playing! We also wanted a video with some viking theme and Alvissmál was perfect for that.
For the text you used different languages: which of you had this idea?
Babs: We didn’t decide that like “let’s do an album with different languages”, so this wasn’t a conceptual idea. The lingual difference in the lyrics grew from song to song, so Maede came up with the idea to make a song out of the poem Alvíssmál which is written in Old Norse and so he did with the poem Mimirs Born from Agnes Kayser-Langerhannß. For Laudine’s Lament I chose a part of the medieval novel Iwein which is written in Middle High German because I liked the words in it so much.
Talkin about Alvíssmál, why did you choose to sing poetic Edda’s verses? Is it been difficult to adapt the music at the text in Old Norse?
Babs: One of the main themes from the album Of Stones And Stars is wisdom. The poetic Edda is full of anecdotes about knowledge and wisdom and so is the story about Alvíss. So we thought it to fit in perfectly. Maede wrote to song, based on a riff by Nick; so I don’t know how difficult it was to put the music around the lyrics, but I think he succeeded really well J
How did the idea of using the verses of the XII century poet, Hartmann von Aue, born?
Babs: As mentioned I like the words and how they are put together. I had to read the novel in my basic Middle High German course at the University. The passage about Laudine mourning over her dead husband really touched me and I knew right away I wanted to make a song out of it.
With A. Kayser-Langerhannß, instead, we come to the 1800, which of you is interested in literature?
Babs: We all are! We like Agnes Kayser-Langerhannß’ poems because they give a new approach to the Nordic Mythology in a very artistic lyrical way.
The three tracks that present poetic and old texts are in the middle of the cd and one behind the other: is this an case or a definite choice?
Maede: We made the order of the tracks due to musical and stile aspects, id had nothing to do directly with the lyrics! 🙂
Taberna Trollis is the only song definable as “joyful” and for this reason different from the others. Is this a less known side of your personality?
Maede: It’s a very important side of us, if you would come to a band rehearsal, you would notice that! 🙂 Our music, or let’s say our lyrics and topics are somehow quite serious, but it’s always a pleasure for us to play music and this is always joyful, no matter if you have a serious message or just play a drinking song! 🙂
You have several guests playing in your cd, but the most famous name is certainly the one of Chrigel Glanzmann: how did the cooperation born?
Maede: We know him for quite a few years and I showed Chrigel the Preproduction of the new album and asked him if he could play the whistles and pipes on it. He liked it very much and played in the tracks in his home studio. 🙂
Underground bands often find difficult in organizing real tours due to economic and practical problems. how are you in this sense, there will be way to see you on european stages?
Maede: Hell your right! To become known, you have to pay a lot of money for touring, because the booking mentality has become totally corrupt in the last years. In Switzerland it’s even more difficult as a metal band, because you get nearly no support from the music business. Fortunately we found in “In fiction entertainment” a very cool booking company that helps us on organizing gigs, especially in Europe. Confirmed are already the Dark Troll Festival in Germany and the Ragnarök-Spektakel in Eglisau in Switzerland.
What’s your strength, on disc and live?
Babs: I think you can hear on our albums that we put a lot of effort in composing in order to keep the songs dynamic and to generate a certain atmosphere. One of our strength live is that we show that we enjoy to be on stage and give this enthusiasm forth to our audience.
What will Caladmor do in 2014? are you working at new material?
Maede: We already have a few new songs that will be performed next year! We will play a lot of shows but we are working also on new songs for an upcoming Album. 🙂
