Intervista: Helheim

Quanti gruppo possono vantare la pubblicazione di un disco stupendo come WoduridaR a quasi trenta anni dalla propria formazione? E quanti, nell’ultima parte di carriera, hanno azzeccato uno dietro l’altro la realizzazione in serie di album che hanno permesso al sound classico del gruppo di progredire rendendolo fresco e sempre nuovo senza tuttavia snaturarlo, lasciando le vecchie radici ancora ben salde? In pochi possono competere con gli Helheim del 2021, e fa sempre piacere avere a che fare con un artista come Vgandr, sincero nelle risposte e con il desiderio di far conoscere meglio l’ultimo nato in casa Helheim.

Ascoltando WoduridaR ho avuto la sensazione di essere circondato dalla nebbia, di avere freddo e di stare incredibilmente bene. Vi piace l’effetto che mi fa e cosa provate voi ad ascoltarlo?

Ti sono grato per il tuo pensiero, ma sottolineo sempre che formulare una propria opinione riguardo l’interpretazione di un album è importante per tutti. Devo dire che comprendo perfettamente la tua descrizione, e in effetti tendo a provare le stesse sensazioni. Tuttavia, quando si lavora così meticolosamente ad un album, come abbiamo fatto noi, è facile esacerbare l’intera sessione. Nel tempo, questo potrebbe riportare all’idea originale, come è stato per i vecchi album.

Ho avuto l’impressione che con WoduridaR abbiate proseguito quanto fatto negli ultimi lavori, ma ripescando una parte di quella vecchia cattiveria musicale che ultimamente era stata messa un po’ in disparte.

Sono totalmente d’accordo, in particolare riguardo Rignir. Dare a quest’album una natura più estrema è stata una decisione consapevole. Allo stesso tempo, devo dire che è stato importante per noi proseguire mantenendo il cantato pulito. Ormai è parte integrante degli Helheim, e rende la musica più atmosferica e variegata.

La mia idea è che questo disco sia il più completo e bello della vostra discografia. Voi cosa pensate di questo disco? So che è difficile da dire, ma quali sono i dischi che ritenete più riusciti e importanti della vostra discografia?

Beh, grazie mille. Non accade molto spesso che una band pubblichi il suo miglior album dopo quasi 30 anni di attività; perciò, questo è sicuramente gratificante da sentirsi dire. E anche io concordo con te. Credo che per ogni band sia importante lavorare all’album successivo pensando che possa essere il migliore. È qualcosa che abbiamo fatto anche noi, e continuiamo a fare, ma col senno di poi non sempre ci siamo riusciti (vedi Blod & Ild, Yersinia pestis ecc.); in ogni caso, direi che i nostri ultimi tre album siano di una qualità davvero soddisfacente.

I testi sono slegati tra di loro e nell’info sheet fate menzione di Tankesmed e Litil Vis Madr come i più oscuri dell’album. Vi chiedo quindi di approfondire i testi del disco e di queste due canzoni nello specifico.

Eheh, servirebbe troppo spazio per darti una spiegazione dettagliata, traccia per traccia. Di solito tendo a farlo per telefono, o comunque a voce. Però, posso farti un tutorial.

Vilje av stål – Questo brano riguarda la perdita di un passato glorioso. Inoltre: dovremmo accettare questa perdita, oppure dovremmo accettare di non accettare ciò che oggi viene accettato? Mi segui?

Forrang for fiende- Anche se tutto sembra ormai perduto nel passato, c’è ancora una luce. Una luce che resta dentro di noi. Questa luce è di natura più umile rispetto a quella moralista tipica di ciò che viene considerato sacro per i monoteisti. Così come loro venerano (il che è davvero una follia in sé), noi impariamo dal nostro passato, e restiamo legati a radici morali che non distruggono (e non si distruggono). Per questo motivo diamo la precedenza ai nemici: sappiamo già che si sentono superiori.

WoduridaR – Riguarda i diversi appellativi di Odino, e i loro legami con le sue diverse aree di azione.

Åndsfilosofen – Un testo completamente bizzarro, al quale ognuno può attribuire la propria idea di significato. Non sono certo nemmeno io di cosa mi passasse per la testa, quando l’ho scritto.

Tankesmed – Rabbia allo stato puro. Lascia che il martello della volontà vibri i suoi colpi sulla testa di coloro che hanno tentato di accecarci nelle ultime migliaia di anni.

Ni s solu sot – Il titolo è in proto-norreno, e può essere tradotto come Senza la luce del sole. Si basa su un libro riguardante il proto-norreno, in cui vengono interpretate e discusse diverse iscrizioni runiche. È decisamente di un testo dal sapore mistico.

Litil vis madr – Un uomo conosce poco. Anche questo testo è basato su un’iscrizione runica. Cosa sappiamo davvero? Quali segreti devono ancora essere svelati? Noi sappiamo poco, ma la terra conosce tutto. Al suo interno albergano molti segreti che devono ancora essere scoperti dagli uomini, e che non sono mai stati portati alla luce.

Det kommer I bølger – Scritta in un momento di disperazione, in cui l’amore infuriava selvaggio nel mio cuore. Si tratta di una storia vera, che per mia fortuna ha avuto un lieto fine.

Ni S Soli Sot è forse la canzone più particolare dell’album, avendo una fisionomia tutta sua e presentando al suo interno diversi elementi che la caratterizzano. Volete raccontarci qualcosa sulla sua composizione e dirci come voi musicisti vedete la canzone in questione?

Questo brano è stato composto da H’grimnir, quindi non posso davvero dire quale sia stato il processo creativo. In ogni caso, è certamente uno dei miei preferiti dell’album.

Torniamo al disco landawarijaR, con la title-track che omaggia Impressioni Di Settembre della P.F.M. La prima volta che ho ascoltato la canzone sono rimasto a bocca aperta perché siete riusciti a far vostro un pezzo della storia del prog amalgamandolo alla perfezione col vostro sound. In quale modo è venuta fuori questa cosa? Prima di iniziare la scrittura avevate già in mente di fare un omaggio del genere o semplicemente è stata fatta in sala prove per “giocare” e poi il risultato vi ha entusiasmato?

Il ricordo è abbastanza vivido. A quei tempi ascoltavo molto prog italiano, e la canzone menzionata fu tra quelle che catturarono maggiormente la mia attenzione. Si avvicinava davvero alla mia definizione di “maestoso”. Avevo già iniziato a comporre la title track, ma poi ho avuto l’idea di includere la P.F.M., creando quello che è l’attuale vero brano. Mentre andavamo in montagna per un meeting, ho presentato la mia idea al resto della band, e tutti l’hanno immediatamente apprezzata. Quindi, la canzone è divenuta realtà.

Il progressive italiano in Norvegia sembra avere diversi fan nella scena viking black: voi, Enslaved e Borknagar non ne fate mistero. La cosa interessante è che tutti voi avete avuto un’evoluzione dal suono crudo degli inizi verso un qualcosa di più strutturato che mette insieme extreme metal e influenze prog, di fatto rendendo i vostri sound unici e immediatamente riconoscibili.

Non sapevo che anche gli Enslaved e i Borknagar ascoltassero prog italiano, ma direi che la cosa abbia senso. Devo sottolineare che landawarijaR è l’unico brano che trae i suoi frutti da un’influenza prog diretta. Le altre sono semplicemente idee sparse che avevamo in testa.

Al di là del nome, qual è la vostra connessione con la mitologia norrena?

I nostri testi riguardano i misteri delle rune, e anche la condotta e l’etica degli antichi. Ritengo che ci sia molto da imparare dal passato. In più, utilizzo la concezione pagana come avversario dei dogmi religiosi che si sono impossessati delle nostre vite.

Ci sarà qualche tour per promuovere il disco, magari in primavera? State organizzando le date sperando di poter girare l’Europa senza problemi?

No, abbiamo solo festival in programma.

Pubblicherete mai un live album o cd/dvd live, magari in occasione di un anniversario?

No, decisamente no. Non abbiamo interesse in questo genere di cose.

Vi ringrazio per l’intervista e spero di potervi vedere presto in concerto in Italia; volete aggiungere qualcosa?

Grazie a te. Spero che il popolo metal italiano apprezzi il nostro nuovo album, visto che noi stessi ne andiamo fieri. E come sempre: il paganesimo è resistenza.

While listening to WoduridaR I have felt like being surrounded by the fog. I could feel the cold air, it was a pleasant and incredible sensation. Do you agree with my personal feeling? How do you feel while listening to this album?

I’m grateful for your thoughts and sensations, but I always stress that it’s important for everyone to make up their own opinion about how an album is interpreted. I must say that I fully understand your description, and I tend to feel the same. Though, when working on an album so thoroughly as we have, it’s easy to overkill the whole session. In time it might bring back the original idea, as it is with older albums.

I had the impression that WoduridaR is the natural prosecution of your last works, with a bit more of your old “musical violence”, which was a bit left out in them.

I do agree, and especially concerning Rignir. It was a conscious decision to let this album be of a more extreme nature. At the same time, I must say that it was important for us to maintain and progress with the clean vocals. It’s now an integral part of Helheim, and it makes the music more varied and atmospheric. 

My general opinion is that WoduridaR is the best one in your discography; moreover, it can be considered also as the most complete one. What do you think about this album? I am aware that it might be a bit difficult for you to select, but I would like to ask you which are the records that you think are the most important and successful in your discography.

Well, thank you for that. It’s not very often a band releases their best album after almost 30 years, so this is of course extremely rewarding to hear. And I do agree with you as well. I think it’s important for any band to always chase the next album as being their best. This is something we also do and have done, but in hindsight we haven’t always succeeded in that (e.g. Blod & Ild, Yersinia pestis etc.), but again I think that our last 3 records are of a very satisfying quality.

The lyrics are not related to each other, and in the info sheet, you mention Tankesmed and Litil Vis Madr as the most obscure tracks of this album. I would like to ask you to tell us more about these two songs, and to give us a further explanation of all the lyrics in general.

Haha, to give you a thorough walk-through through every track would take up too much space. I rather tend to do that via telephone or other oral medias. But I will give you a tutorial.

Vilje av stål- Is about the loss of a grandeur past. Moreover, should we accept this loss, or should we accept to not accept what is now the accepted. Get it?

Forrang for fiende- Though all seems lost in the past there is still a glow. The glow that lingers within us. This glow is of a humbler state than the self-righteous light of the holy/monotheistic. As they worship (indeed a folly in itself), we learn from our/the past and stick to the moral roots that doesn’t destroy. So, for that matter we give precedence to enemy as they already feel that they’re superior.

WoduridaR- Concerning Odin’s different names and how they’re linked to his different areas of activity.

Åndsfilosofen- Completely and utterly a weird lyric where each can find their own meaning. I’m not even sure myself what I had in mind when I wrote it.

Tankesmed- This is pure anger. Let the hammer of the will fall hard upon the ones who have tried to blind us the last thousands of years.

Ni s solu sot- The title is pre-nordic and can be translated into No sunlight. Based on a book about the pre-nordic language where different runic inscriptions are debated and interpreted. A mystic lyric, indeed.

Litil vis madr– And man knows little. This is also based on a runic inscription. What do we actually know? What secrets are still to be revealed? We know little, but the earth knows it all. Therein lies so many secrets that are still to be found by man, and some never to be excavated.

Det kommer I bølger- Written in dire times when love raged wild in my heart. It’s a true story, and luckily for me it ended well.

Ni S Soli Sot probably is the most peculiar track of the whole album: it has its very own structure and several elements that characterize it uniquely. Would you like to tell us something about the process of writing, and your thoughts on this song?

This song was created by H’grimnir, so I can’t really say how the process was. It sure is one of my favourites on the album.

Let’s take a step back to your album LandawarijaR: the title track is a tribute to P.F.M.’s song Impressioni Di Settembre. The first time that I listened to it I was truly amazed: you have been able to re-interpret a milestone in the history of prog, mixing it with your sound with a perfect result. What was the process that led you to this? Did you have in mind to make this tribute before starting writing? Or was it a kind of experiment made during the rehearsals, with a result that left you excited?

I remember it quite vividly. At the time I was listening to a lot of Italian prog., and one of the songs that really caught my attention was the mentioned song. It really resonated to what I consider majestic. At the time I’d already started writing the title track, but I could hear the idea of using P.F.M. on this actual track. On our way to the mountains to have a band meeting I presented the rest of the band with the song, and they immediately liked the idea. And so, the song was a reality.

Italian progressive music seems to be popular in the Norwegian viking black scene: you don’t make a mystery of it, along with Enslaved and Borknagar. The most interesting aspect is that all of you have experienced an evolution: from the rough sound of beginnings to something more complex that blends extreme metal and prog influences. This leads to unique styles and sounds, easily and immediately recognizable.

I didn’t know that Enslaved and Borknagar listened to Italian prog., but I guess it makes sense. I must stress that the song LandawarijaR is the only song that bears fruit from a direct influence from prog. The other influences are just loose ideas coming from the brain.

Besides the name of your band, what would you say about your connection with Norse mythology?

Our lyrics deals with the mysteries of the runes, but also the conduct and ethics of old. I think we have a lot to learn from our past. Furthermore, I use the pagan notion as an adversary to the religious dogmas that possesses our lives.

Are you planning a tour to promote your album, maybe in Spring? Are you scheduling the dates, hoping that it will be possible to travel around Europe without any issues?

No, we’re not. Only doing festivals.

Are you thinking about releasing a live album or a live CD/DVD, maybe to celebrate an anniversary?

No, certainly not. Not interested in doing such.
