Intervista: Heidra

Un breve EP di qualità, un concorso, la vittoria di un contratto discografico e la partecipazione a un grande festival musicale. La vita degli Heidra è cambiata in una manciata di minuti di concerto, venti giri di lancetta che hanno permesso loro di esordire con il piacevole Awaiting Dawn su Mighty Records. Una storia che andava raccontata e che Mister Folk non poteva lasciarsi sfuggire…

Siete al debutto e non molte persone vi conoscono al di fuori della Danimarca: raccontate le vostre origini e la storia della band.

Ciao Fabrizio, è Morten Bryld che scrive: dunque, ecco la versione breve. L’idea di fondare la band risale al 2006, quando con Martin e il nostro ex batterista Simon abbiamo cominciato a fare musica. Il primo demo, The Saga, è stato pubblicato nel 2008 dopo due anni trascorsi cercando un batterista fisso, facendo un po’ di concerti qua e là e in pausa il resto del tempo. Nel 2011 abbiamo pubblicato il demo Northern Tales (che era stato registrato due anni prima). Nel 2012 abbiamo cominciato a fare sul serio e abbiamo registrato in uno studio professionale l’EP Sworn To Vengeance, con Søren Jensen come batterista turnista. In seguito siamo finalmente riusciti a trovare nella persona di Mikkel Køster il batterista fisso degli Heidra ed è stato allora che abbiamo cominciato a fare più (e più grandi) concerti e registrato il nostro album di debutto Awaiting Dawn.

Avete vinto la Might Fight Night aggiudicandovi, tra l’altro, il contratto con la Mighty Music: cosa mi raccontate di quella serata?

È stato come a un concerto qualunque, a eccezione del fatto che per suonare avevamo a disposizione solo 20 minuti e che c’era gente che avrebbe dovuto scegliere, sulla base delle varie performance, la miglior band della serata. E a quanto pare i giudici e il pubblico hanno deciso che fossimo noi, così abbiamo vinto e ci siamo ritrovati a suonare in uno dei più grandi festival metal della Scandinavia.

Il full length Awaiting Dawn è stato pubblicato da poco: siete completamente soddisfatti del risultato finale?

Ritengo che Awaiting Dawn sia un grande album, ma penso anche che, a lavoro ultimato, la maggior parte dei musicisti vi direbbe che c’è sempre qualcosa che avrebbero fatto in modo diverso. Quindi sì, siamo molto soddisfatti dell’album ma c’è sempre spazio per miglioramenti. Abbiamo intenzione di continuare a progredire sia come musicisti che come compositori e penso che ciò sarà visibile nei nostri futuri dischi.

A livello di sound sono riconoscibili le influenze da diversi generi musicali: quali sono i vostri gusti e i gruppi che più vi ispirano?

Ognuno nella band ha le proprie influenze musicali. Per esempio il nostro bassista proviene da un background rock/blues mentre il nostro tastierista trae molta ispirazione dalle colonne sonore dei film. Comunque tutti noi ascoltiamo il metal nelle sue innumerevoli declinazioni, quindi l’ispirazione viene da tutto ciò che è riconducibile a questo genere musicale. Dal death e thrash al power e folk metal. Certo, originariamente, la nostra musica si ispira soprattutto alla scena folk/viking metal nordica.

In quale maniera nasce un brano degli Heidra?

Molti membri della band prendono parte attivamente alla scrittura dei pezzi, quindi la maggior parte delle nostre canzoni rappresenta il frutto di un impegno collettivo in questo senso. Qualcuno salterà fuori con un riff, una melodia o farà gran parte del lavoro che è alla base della creazione di una canzone mentre il resto sarà costruito con il contributo degli altri membri della band partendo da quanto fatto fino ad allora. Per finire, viene presa una decisione collettiva riguardo a quali canzoni inserire nell’album e quali no.

Trovo la produzione impeccabile, d’altra parte lavorare con Andy LaRoque e Olaf Berggren fa la differenza…

Sì, sono entrambi dei tecnici del suono molto esperti e sanno come rendere perfetto il sound di un album. Senza la loro competenza non avremmo mai potuto realizzare in studio quella che era la nostra idea di sound per quest’album.

Come pensate di essere cambiati ed evoluti rispetto all’EP Sworn To Vengeance?

Da un punto di vista musicale, penso che probabilmente qualunque pezzo di Sworn To Vengeance sarebbe potuto essere una canzone di Awaiting Dawn. Il cambiamento più grande riguarda la produzione, che nel nuovo album è probabilmente di livello superiore. Ma ciò comunque non toglie nulla all’EP e a Søren Jensen che l’ha registrato con noi. Se me lo chiedi, è un EP fantastico. Gran parte del nostro successo come band risale a dopo la pubblicazione di Sworn To Vengeance. Con quel disco abbiamo attirato l’attenzione sia a livello nazionale che internazionale e alla fine siamo giunti alla pubblicazione di Awaiting Dawn, tuttavia in così poco tempo non penso che siamo cambiati chissà quanto.

Ritengo l’EP molto valido, pensate di inserire una o più canzoni di quel lavoro nel prossimo disco?

Probabilmente non nel nostro prossimo disco, ma potrebbero essere ripescate in futuro. Chi lo sa. Si presuppone che l’EP sia una pubblicazione a sé stante e in quest’era digitale, dove tutti possono avvalersi di iTunes, Spotify e simili, non equivale affatto a realizzare 100 copie di un demo per poi venderle ai tuoi amici. Quello che sto cercando di dire è che è abbastanza facile entrare in possesso di Sworn To Vengeance, quindi al momento non c’è alcun bisogno di pubblicare nuovamente quei pezzi.

Come vedete la scena danese folk oriented? Tra voi, Svartsot, Huldre e Vanir non ci si può certo lamentare per la qualità!

Beh, la scena è piuttosto limitata, quindi ci conosciamo tutti e abbiamo fatto concerti insieme, credo, in ogni combinazione possibile. Sicuramente consideriamo quei ragazzi nostri amici e ci piace condividere il palco con loro.

Al Copenhell avete suonato alle 12, ma al di là dell’orario “scomodo”, che esperienza è stata per voi?

Beh, come dici tu, le 12 non sono l’orario migliore per suonare a un concerto metal, eppure è stata una bellissima esperienza con un’ottima affluenza, quindi ci siamo divertiti molto. Sia tutto il team sul palco che l’intera organizzazione sono stati molto professionali. Abbiamo avuto un problema con una intro ma penso che sia stato un problema di comunicazione, quindi non abbiamo davvero nulla di cui lamentarci. È stato stupendo.

Il nome Heidra viene dalla canzone dei Windir contenuta nel disco 1184?

Sì. Abbiamo pensato che fosse un buon modo per omaggiare una band che ci ha ispirato agli inizi.

Per quanti dischi avete firmato? Quali saranno i vostri prossimi passi?

Il contratto che abbiamo con la Mighty Music/Target Group riguarda solo Awaiting Dawn. L’accordo non prevede altri album. Se tutto va bene, il passo successivo degli Heidra saranno uno/due tour e a seguire la realizzazione di un altro album.

You are making your debut and not many people know you outside Denmark: please, tell us about your band from beginning to present.

Hi Fabrizio, Morten Bryld here: well, here’s the short version. The idea of creating this band was born in 2006, when I got together with Martin and our former drummer Simon and started playing music. The first demo, The Saga, was released in 2008 and after that we spent a couple of years looking for a steady drummer, playing a few gigs here and there and the rest of the time on hiatus. In 2011 we released the Northern Tales demo (which had been recorded two years previous). In 2012 we got more serious and recorded the Sworn To Vengeance EP in a proper studio, with Søren Jensen as a session drummer. After that, we finally managed to find a drummer to be part of Heidra in the form of Mikkel Køster and that’s when we started playing more (and bigger) gigs and recorded our debut album, Awaiting Dawn.

You won the Might Fight Night and were awarded, among other things, a contract with Mighty Music: what can you tell me about that night?

It was like any other gig, except for the fact that we only had 20 minutes to play and there would be people deciding which band played the best show on the night. And apparently the judges and the crowd thought it was us, so we won and we got to play one of the biggest metal festivals in Scandinavia.

Recently you released the full length Awaiting Dawn: are you totally satisfied with the end result?

I think Awaiting Dawn is a great album, but I think most musicians will tell you that there’s always something they would have done different once they finish an album. So, yes, we’re very satisfied with the album, but there’s always room for improvement. We’re going to continue to get better as musicians and songwriters and I think that’s going to show on our future albums.

With regard to sound it’s possible to notice influences from different music genres: what music do you usually listen to? What bands inspire you the most?

Everyone in the band has their own influences. Our bassist for instance comes from a rock/blues background and our keyboard player is very inspired by movie scores. But we all listen to metal in all shapes and sizes, so the inspiration comes from everything metal. From death metal and thrash, to power metal and folk. But of course our music is originally mostly inspired by the Nordic folk/viking metal scene.

Where do your songs/ideas come from?

A lot of the band members take active part in the songwriting process, so most of our songs are a joint effort in that respect. Someone will come up with a riff or a melody or make most of the base work for a song and the rest will be built up from there with input from the rest of the band. In the end it’s a collective decision which songs go on the album and which don’t.

I find the production impeccable, on the other hand working with Andy La Rocque and Olof Berggren makes a difference…

Yes, they are both very accomplished audio engineers and they know how to make an album sound great. We couldn’t have accomplished our vision for how we wanted the album to sound without their skills in the studio.

How do you think you have changed since the release of the EP Sworn To Vengeance?

Musically, I think any of the songs on Sworn to Vengeance could probably have been a song on Awaiting Dawn. The biggest change is the production, which is probably more high-end on the new album. But that shouldn’t take anything away from the EP or Søren Jensen who recorded it with us. It’s an awesome EP, if you ask me. As a band, we’ve experienced most of our success after we released Sworn To Vengeance. It got us some good attention both domestically and internationally and ultimately led to the release of Awaiting Dawn, but I don’t think we’ve really changed that much in such a short time.

I think the EP is very good. Are you planning to include one or more songs from it in your next album?

Probably not on our next record, but they might see a return in the future. You never know. The EP is supposed to be a stand-alone release, and in this digital age where everyone can get on iTunes, Spotify and all that, it’s not really the same as releasing a demo in 100 copies and selling them to your friends. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s pretty easy to get hold of Sworn to Vengeance, so there’s no need to re-release those songs at the moment.

What do you think about the Danish folk-oriented scene? Thanks to you, Svartsot, Huldre and Vanir there’s really nothing to complain about!

Well, the scene is pretty small, so we all know each other and have played gigs with each other in every possible combination, I think. We definitely consider those guys friends of ours and we love sharing the stage with them.

At Copenhell you played at 12 am. Except the “uncomfortable” timetable, what kind of experience did you have?

Well, as you say, 12 o’clock isn’t the best time to play a metal show, but it was still a great experience and an excellent tournout, so we had a lot of fun. The whole team at the stage and the whole set-up was very professional. We had a problem with an intro, but I think that must’ve been miscommunication, so we don’t really have any complaints. It was awesome.

Does the name “Heidra” come from the song included in Windir’s album 1184?

Yes, it does. We thought it was a good way to honour a band that inspired us back in the beginning.

How many albums does your contract provide? What about Heidra’s next steps?

The contract we have with Mighty Music/Target Group is only for Awaiting Dawn. It’s not a multi-album deal. The next step for Heidra is hopefully a tour or two and then another album after that.
