Intervista: Alphayn

Austria, heathen metal. No, non si sta parlando degli Heathen Foray, ma degli Alphayn, nuova formazione che ha debuttato, coraggiosamente, con un full-length autoprodotto di buona qualità. Alphayn che hanno in comune con gli Heathen Foray il cantante, Robert Schroll, ma è bene dirlo, i punti in comune terminano qui. Proprio con Rob ho parlato del cd Heimkehr, un lavoro ben curato in grado di dare belle soddisfazioni agli amanti del pagan metal più crudo e diretto.

Come è nato il gruppo e quali sono gli obiettivi degli Alphayn?

Ho studiato a Vienna e lì ho conosciuto queste persone meravigliose. L’idea ci è venuta davanti a una birra. Molti di noi erano amici già da prima di cominciare a fare musica. Amiamo fare musica insieme, intrattenerci gli uni con gli altri e uscire in gruppo. Gli Alphayn sono il risultato della nostra amicizia.

Pubblicare subito un full-length senza passare per almeno un demo o un EP è spesso rischioso, eppure voi siete riusciti a realizzare un buon lavoro. Pensi sia dovuto al fatto che siete dei musicisti con esperienza?

Ah! Forse. In realtà si tratta anche del semplice fatto che fare un demo o un EP è comunque un lavoro impegnativo. Volevamo usare meglio il nostro tempo. Volevamo fare un full-length di alta qualità.

Heimkehr si presenta bene esteticamente: un digipack elegante per una band debuttante e per di più senza il supporto di una casa discografica non è cosa di tutti i giorni!

Sì. Siamo molto soddisfatti. La grafica della copertina è stata realizzata da Fabrizio de Rossi, nostro amico nonché già autore della copertina di Inner Force degli Heathen Foray. Ci piaceva molto l’idea di produrre un digipack e, per essere onesti, c’era un’offerta speciale presso la casa discografica che ha prodotto l’album. 😉

Come mai la scelta di pubblicare da soli il disco? Maggiore libertà artistica o sfiducia verso il music business?

Nulla di tutto ciò. L’abbiamo fatto e basta. Non volevamo aspettare di raggiungere un accordo. Volevamo fare quest’album. E con “quest’album” intendo proprio l’album che ora puoi sentire. L’album che tieni tra le mani. Non cambieremmo neanche UNA cosa.

Quali sono i pro e i contro di autoprodursi il disco di debutto?

Pro: puoi fare ciò che vuoi quando vuoi. Sei il “manager” di te stesso. Non ci sono etichette che assorbono parte del tuo guadagno.

Contro: Con un’etichetta hai molta più promozione e il tuo cd arriva nei negozi.

Musicalmente vi ho trovato molto “quadrati”, un sound roccioso, omogeneo e non piatto. Tra l’altro penso che avete le capacità per osare qualcosa in più per il prossimo lavoro… sei d’accordo?

Totalmente. Amo il sound di Heimkehr (grazie a Marco Cudan). Siamo una band giovane. Abbiamo bisogno di trovare la nostra strada e questo disco è solo l’inizio.

Quali sono le fonti d’ispirazione per la band? Quali gruppi ammirate maggiormente? Siete influenzati anche da situazioni extra musicali (libri, film ecc.)?

Tra i gruppi che ammiriamo di più ci sono ottime band pagan “underground”, ma certamente anche band più note… Musica a parte, siamo influenzati anche da altre cose. I pezzi Alarich e Wir Rufen Deine Wölfe si ispirano a delle poesie. E Reise trae spunto dalla serie di romanzi di Stephen King La Torre Nera.

I testi sono presenti all’interno del booklet, ma ti va di parlarne un po’ ai lettori che non conoscono il tedesco?

Alarich: poesia di August Graf von Platen. Il titolo originale dell’opera era Das Grab am Busento.

Weltenanfang: parla dell’origine del mondo e dei primi esseri viventi come il gigante Ymir. Inoltre riguarda anche il primo conflitto.

Wetz die Krallen: la canzone parla del diavolo che è in noi. Del nostro lato oscuro. Nella canzone ci si chiede se, a volte, possa far bene liberare il nostro lato selvaggio.

Maschinenmonster: temiamo le macchine che creiamo? Una società high tech è desiderabile?

Reise: sì, questa canzone parla di Roland di Gilead e della ricerca della Torre Nera. Adoro i libri di Stephen King!

Heimkehr: una, come dire, tipica canzone vichinga. Facendo ritorno da un’incursione le tribù vichinghe trovano la loro dimora distrutta.

Rache: Vendetta! Per l’insediamento distrutto!

Wir Rufen Deine Wölfe: poesia di Friedrich Hilscher.

Abstieg: simpatica storiella di un tale che, durante una passeggiata, viene soccorso da Thor in persona e sottratto alle grinfie dei Goblin.

La band è attualmente al lavoro per il successore di Heimkehr? Oppure ci sarà una certa “alternanza” tra Heathen Foray e Alphayn?

Heathen Foray e Alphayn sono due band distinte. Mi piacerebbe poter dedicare lo stesso tempo a entrambe le band. In tutta sincerità devo ammettere che negli ultimi mesi ho un po’ trascurato gli Alphayn. Spero di avere più tempo quanto prima… Con gli Alphayn abbiamo preparato del nuovo materiale. E stiamo lavorando su altro ancora.

Sia Alphayn che Heathen Foray suonano heathen metal: quali, secondo te, le differenze tra i due gruppi?

Penso che gli Alphayn siano un po’ più brutali. E sì, i Foray sono più melodici. Gli Alphayn sono più rudi. E i loro testi non saranno in inglese. Ci sono musicisti e compositori diversi, nonché influenze di altro tipo. Certo c’è lo stesso “background testuale”, la stessa voce, data la mia presenza. Vediamo un po’ come si evolveranno in futuro le due band. É qualcosa di molto interessante, anche per me. E spero davvero di avere la forza e la resistenza per continuare a prestare la mia voce a entrambi i gruppi.

ENGLISH VERSION: 

First of all, tell us how the project Alphayn was born and what your objectives are.

I studied in Vienna. And there I met this wonderful people. And out of a Beer there was the Idea born. Most of us were friends before we started making music. We love doing music together, hanging around and going out together. Alphayn is the consequent result of our friendship.

You recorded neither a demo nor an EP and you decided to release directly a full-length. It can be a risky decision but you did a good job. Do you think it’s due to the fact that you are experienced musicians?

Ha! Maybe. But it is also a very simple fact that making a demo or EP is hard work too. We wanted do use our time better. We wanted to make a full length record in a cool quality.

Heimkehr looks really good: it’s pretty uncommon to see such an elegant digipack, especially when it comes to a brand new band that isn’t supported by a record label!

Yes. We are very satisfied. A friend of us, Fabrizio de Rossi, did the cover artwork. He also made the coverart for Heathen Foray’s Inner Force. We loved the idea of producing a digipack and, to be honest, there was a special offer at the company which produced the album. 😉

Why did you choose to self-publish your album? Is it a matter of greater artistic freedom or of distrust of the music business?

Nothing like that. We just did it. We didn´t wanted to wait for a deal. We wanted to do this album. And by “this album” I mean that album you can listen to. That album you are holding in your hands. We would not change ONE thing.

What are the pros and cons of self-producing a debut album?

Pro: you can do everything at your own time. You are your own “manager”. There is no label which is cutting something from your income. Contra: you have much more promotion with a label. You get your Cd into the stores with a label.

From a musical point of view, I found you well grounded, with a rugged, homogeneous and absolutely not flat sound. Among other things, I think you have all the credentials to attempt to do something more in your next work… do you agree?

Totally. I love the sound of Heimkehr (thanks to Marco Cudan). We are a young band. And we have to find our own way and this record is just the beginning.

Who/what inspires you the most? What bands do you admire the most? Are you affected by extra-musical situations too? (books, films etc.)

There are great “underground” pagan bands but of course the great ones also… Besides music there are some things inspiring us. The songs Alarich and Wir Rufen Deine Wölfe are inspired by poems. And Reise is highly influenced by King’s Dark Tower books.

Lyrics are included in the booklet. Would you mind telling something about them in order that our non-German speaking readers can get a sense of the topics raised?

Alarich: A poem by August Graf von Platen. The name of the poem is originally Das Grab am Busento.

Weltenanfang: It is about the beginning of the world. About the first beings like Ymir the giant. It is also about the first dispute.

Wetz die Krallen: This song is about the devil within. About your darkest side. The song asks if it is good sometimes to let your wild side free.

Maschinenmonster: Do we fear the machines we create? Is a high tech society desirable?

Reise: yes, this song is about Roland from Gileads search for the dark tower. I love the books from Stephen King!

Heimkehr: Your, not so, typical viking song. Comming home from a raid the viking crew finds their home destroyed.

Rache: Revenge! For the destroyed settlement!

Wir Rufen Deine Wölfe: A poem by Friedrich Hilscher.

Abstieg: A lovely little story about a fool strolling around getting saved from Goblins by Thor himself.

Is the band currently working on the successor to Heimkehr? Will there be a kind of “alternation” between Heathen Foray and Alphayn?

Heathen Foray and Alphayn are two different bands. I would love to give both bands the same amount of time. Honestly I have to admit that I neglected Alphayn in the last months. I hope that there will be more time soon. There is new material for Alphayn. And we are working on more.

Both Alphayn and Heathen Foray play heathen metal: in your opinion, what are the differences between these two bands?

I think Alphayn is a little more brutal. And yes, Foray is more melodious. Alphayn is rougher. And there wont be English lyrics in Alphayn. There are different musicians, composers, different influences. Yes there is the same “lyrical background”, the same voice, because of me. Let us see how both of the bands are going to develop in the future. It is very interesting. Also for me. And I really hope to have the power and the stamina to lend my voice both bands.
